PROFESSIONAL Footballers Australia has dismissed concerns that current Newcastle Jets players are affected by the overdue-payments saga that involves four A-League clubs.
Earlier in the month, Fairfax Media reported Adelaide, Brisbane, Central Coast and Newcastle had until the end of 2015 to catch up on a host of outstanding financial entitlements to players.
But PFA, the players’ union, clarified on Wednesday that Newcastle’s issues related to ex-players and the club’s former owners, Con Constantine and Nathan Tinkler.
It is understood the players sacked almost 12 months ago by Tinkler, including Joel Griffiths, Billy Celeski and Adrian Madaschi, are still waiting for unpaid superannuation. They have been assured by Football Federation Australia any arrears will be honoured once the Newcastle franchise, which has been in the hands of the governing body for the past seven months, has been sold.
“PFA can confirm that all oustanding obligations are up to date for current players at the Newcastle Jets,’’ a PFA spokesman said. “Any debts accrued by the previous owners to former players are currently being worked through with FFA in an ongoing process.’’
While the issue will not impact on the Jets, if any clubs are proven to have not honoured their commitments, their players could declare themselves free agents. Clubs would also risk losing competition points, according to the terms of the new collective-bargaining agreement negotiated between FFA and PFA.
Meanwhile, Central Coast wingers Fabio Ferreira and Mitch Austin will almost certainly start against Wellington on New Year's Eve, as the Mariners attempt to turn around their miserable run of A-League losses.
Portuguese X-factor Ferreira has been making a gradual return from the bench the past two matches, following a lengthy injury lay-off.

Austin, who has earned his own plaudits for his flying runs down the left flank, sat out last Saturday's 4-1 thumping by Sydney FC with a virus.
But coach Tony Walmsley backed both to return at Central Coast Stadium on Thursday night.
"There's no doubt we're at our best with Fab Ferreira and Mitch Austin on the wings," Walmsley said.
"Both are fit and available, and I can confidently say both will probably start the game. Fab's not going to last 90 minutes, but we'll make sure we've got people on the bench that can come in and do a job."
Young back-up goalkeeper Tom Heward-Belle will make his A-League starting debut in place of suspended Paul Izzo, who was given his marching orders in the first half against Sydney.
Skipper Nick Montgomery backed Heward-Belle's form, but said the 18-year-old did not need encouragement.
"There's no pressure on Tommy and he's not nervous. He's a confident guy and I think everyone will enjoy watching him tomorrow night," Montgomery said.
"The boys will rally around him, but to be honest he's pretty cool. He's a pretty laid-back character, but you can see in his eyes he's focused and desperate to take his opportunity.’’
After a club-record six consecutive losses and only five points from the opening 12 rounds, Central Coast will need a drastic turnaround to avoid the wooden spoon.
So likes of Griff, Celeski and Madaschi are yet to have their Super paid....nearly 12 months after being sacked by Tinks.
Meanwhile FFA have been in control for 7 months now and are treating any outstanding debts to previous players as "Ongoing".
Wouldn't it be better for all concerned to just clear any outstanding Super payments to players and not have this hanging around for the next owner to deal with??? Every year my opinion of FFA as the governing body of the game just gets lower and lower!
