Newcastle Jets boss Scott Miller will visit EPL clubs Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth as part of an extensive European scouting mission during the Hyundai A-League off-season.
Miller departs on Tuesday for a six-week journey in which he will visit clubs in England and then around Scandinavia, with the goal of not only looking for playing talent but also broadening the Jets’ network abroad.
“Whilst I’m in London I’m going to go and visit Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace and then go to the FA Cup final. I’m going to Bournemouth to see Eddie Howe and Tottenham as well,” Miller told www.a-league.com.au.
“I’ll then be going to meet Stale Solbakken at Copenhagen for six days, then onto Brondby as well.
“It’s more a watch-and-learn approach than identifying players. It’s about understanding different principles, different philosophies and understanding team identity and culture.
“Looking at team dynamic and different coaching styles…and more importantly trusting people and building relationships whilst I’m over there so we can utilise their network.
“We don’t have a massive scouting network in Australia whereas these big clubs do. They have loads of chief scouts throughout the world and I want to build a relationship with them so we can utilise their services.”

Miller sees Scandinavia as a great untapped area for A-League clubs to explore to discover talented players.
During his time at English club Fulham, Miller worked with a number of players from that region and was left suitably impressed, while Dane Morten Nordstrand was a star in the second half of last season with the Jets.
“The standard of Scandinavia and their footballing education is very good. What you have there is the second or third tier rating in the worldwide football scheme,” the Jets boss said.
“But you have clubs there playing in the Champions League and Europa League year in, year out. The exposure is actually very good, the quality is higher than Australia based on how early they start playing and educating their young footballers.
“And more importantly their wages tend to correlate greater [to Australia] more than an England or a Spain. It’s a real advantage for us.
“I’m looking for a younger dynamic player for the Jets and with that maybe loans out of Scandinavia could be a benefit. Our experience here [at the Jets] was good and at Fulham it was even better…they are very driven and got a great work ethic.”

Mariners have tweeted that it applies to their full season ticket holders too. They can come to both games up here next year fro free.

The way to encourage the expansion of the idea is to show up in Gosford and the Mariners fans do the same (yeah I do mean show up in Gosford) and also come to Newcastle and show it can be a success.

Jets & Mariners join forces to revitalise the #F3Derby


The Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners have today announced a ground-breaking membership initiative which is designed to reinvigorate the local rivalry over the next two seasons.

In an exciting partnership, Jets and Mariners full-season ticketed members will be able to attend away fixtures in the F3 Derby free of charge.

The agreement, which runs over the 2016-17 and 2017-18 Hyundai A-League seasons, enable supporters of both clubs to attend three away matches over the two-year arrangement.

Interim Newcastle Jets CEO David Eland believes the initiative will give the fixture a significant boost and help to revive some of the passion and competitiveness of the early F3 Derbies.

“This initiative adds significant value to the clubs’ membership packages,” Eland said.

“I’m sure the opportunity to attend the Away F3 Derbies free of charge will be well received by the members of both clubs.”

The Jets had the better of their local rivals in the most recent campaign, recording two victories in the final third of the season – both in Gosford – with the two teams played out a thrilling 1-1 draw at Hunter Stadium in Round six.

While the Sydney and Melbourne Derbies have taken the spotlight in the Hyundai A-League in recent seasons – and rightly so – the F3 derby remains the competition’s only original local rivalry.

And with memories of the 36,354 fans on hand to watch Central Coast tackle the Jets in the 2008 Grand Final, Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp hopes the deal can help make the clash a marquee fixture once again.

“The clubs are committed to restoring the F3 Derbies as the most anticipated clashes of the season,” Mielekamp said.

“This initiative will boost attendance and reinvigorate the passionate rivalry which exists between the Mariners and the Jets.”

Reciprocal agreement is interesting. The cynic in me says these are 2 clubs who are moving home games away. I expect season ticket prices to remain the same with the reciprocal game/s been seen as making up the difference

no real benefit for to us letting 5000 WSW fans up here for nothing - we get more $$$ for the matchday ticket than we would letting them come to us as part of a season ticket.
same with Smurfs Id reckon.

As someone who goes to away games in NSW I think it ****ing great if it is expanded to WSW and Sydney as well. Who gives a **** if they bring more here than we take there.

Make for much better away days in Sydney if we can take 1000 or so to Sydney like we do at Gosford rather than 200-300 like we do lately
