We've got the majority of our team on board already.

Look at Victory who lost Barbarouses, Finkler, Deng, Delpierre, Pain and a host of others I can't be bothered looking up. They've signed only Donachie and a Spanish dude. If the jets did this they'd be getting blasted for not getting our squad together early enough.

Wanderers are in the middle of a massive turnover. Our first team is actually for once pretty stable! Yet that's not good enough.

Mariners have signed a number of players from other clubs in the A-League who people would class as rejects. We've scouted overseas and actually signed International and Aussie players to the team. Yet that's still not good enough.

The club simply can't win no matter what they do.

Yeah we have stability but where exactly are the key signings to make us better than what we were last season??

Vujic Alessi Clut Duncan may well develop into fine players but they are Gamble's
They may work they may not

Hoole is another who needs to develop some end product

Brown's a bit of an unknown

But all of them are not what I would call head and shoulders better prospects than we had last year

All we have now is more depth to our list of average HAL players

I agree we don't seem to have the X-factor in the team, something I discussed with Borat yesterday. But we still have spots to fill and I'm sure that hasn't been lost on Miller.

Every transfer is a gamble, cliché I know. Clut hasn't been given a proper change, Brown I agree is the unknown, Duncan has overseas experience, Vujica is another prospect. My approach will be to watch them play a few times in person before deciding whether they are improvements on the likes of Watson, Leo, Triff, Enver etc. we can really only compare Hoole to say Kitto/Enver and it's a personal judgment on who you'd like.

We've had the most stable off-season in a very long time with nowhere near the turnover of players we have had in previous years. I'm hoping that extra time together, earlier, counts for something come October.

I have been impressed with the stability in the match day squad over the past 12 months. As I was saying in the other thread I'm just concerned with the overall quality. Small steps I guess. Get the core right first. Being the stats man that you are were you able to compare the amount of players Miller used? I felt as if our turnover was less as well as our injury rate. I was happy to see the same 11 run out the following week etc unlike previous years where we'd rotate for the sake of rotating. I just genuinely believe we are still a few quality signings off making any impact in the league.

Mmmm I don't agree. Kilkenny would have been a solid signing 2-3 years ago. Replacing close to the best player in the league is going to be difficult.

OK I went back a few seasons only.

12/13 - Used 28 players and released 8 at the conclusion of the season.
13/14 - Used 26 players and released 13 at the end of the year.
14/15 - Used 32 players and released 20 during/at the end of the year.
15/16 - Used 24 players and released 10 during/at the end of the year.

Interestingly, our highest ever points total was achieved in the year following the fewest players being released.

    No idea on injury rates.

I have followed the Jets since the very first season. Every year I have predicted us to finish in the top 6. I am the eternal optimist who generally gets bagged on here as a club multi or GVE in disguise.

But this year I just don't see it. IMO we over achieved last season. Miller got us off to a flyer and some late season signings, and a pitiful Mariners, kept us in 7th.

I just don't see where we have strengthened to push us any higher than where we finished last season, and a stronger opposition will deliver a worse finish.

You look at all the other teams and our starting side just isn't of the same quality. You raise a valid point about Victory and the Wanderers. But in all seriousness do you not see them being a title contenders come Rd1. They are every year. Their lack of transfer activity actually worries me that they are brewing something special. All those empty Visa spots will likely provide top class signings.

You could say signing Brown is an improvement but where does he play. He doesn't seem like a Castelen or Novillo type player, which is what we needed, but rather just a quality all rounder. Good but not great. Yes we will sign a striker who may or may not be any better than Triffunovic.

Otherwise we signed unproven players. Clut may be great or he maybe the next Patafta. Hoole has a lot to prove. Vujica is a 19yo youth player. They may turn out great buys but they may be nothing. That does not instill any confidence in me when at the same time players like Taggart, Herd, Cahill, Brilliante all return to the A-League to our opposition.

For me a lot depends on final 2 ish signings.
I belive we have gone for a difference type of player this season. Strong technical and smart players with strong work ethics.
I reckon we will press more this season and control more possession.
I reckon our formations will be pretty flexible, especially in the mids.
An out and out goal scorer would be nice to finish it off. Taggart would of been a great get.

Thanks for that. Shows that we are at least getting the stability right. On the flip side you could say that we are decreasing depth by reducing the amount of players we can call on having A league experience.

Pressing more is no guarantee we will get more possession.

Remember it is the same technically challenged players who mis direct passes can't control balls play it to opponent's etc

Improving pressing will help us create more chances up the park and will also disrupt our opponents more.

It will not mean more possession until you have superior skilled players to keep it when you get it

He won't replace Mooy. Different types of players. Different frontline too with Cahill now, and I expect a bigger role for their wide men with a different style of play away from the reliance on a midfielder to create.
