Because it sounds like the signing isn't 100% complete and the club have learnt before about jumping the gun.

    nix sign Marco Rossi

looks a good signing (apart from the whole match fixing ban).

phoenix look like they could be a real challenger this year.

JETS coach Scott Miller says one of the key lessons he learned from his first season as an A-League coach was that his players need to be physically and mentally stronger.

So throughout the 2015-16 pre-season, he has pushed Newcastle’s players to the limit in his quest for an edge that will help end the club’s six-season absence from the play-offs.

“My mentality this year is that our point of difference needs to be a number of things, but one of them is a stronger mentality through challenging periods of time, and a massive, massive shift when it comes to physical implications of the game and dominance,’’ Miller said.

“I want us to be really recognised for that, and I think we’re well on the way to doing so.’’

In comparison to 12 months ago, Miller said he had a better understanding of the “risks” of a 12- to 14-week pre-season.

“Last year I was probably a bit soft on them, essentially, in terms of managing managing the load,’’ he said.

“But that extra year, and with [new assistant coach Luciano Trani] coming on board this year, has allowed us to really test them mentally and via a physical load, more often than not.’’

Newcastle will ramp up their preparations for the coming season with a four-day training camp in northern NSW, culminating in a trial match against arch-rivals Central Coast at Tamworth on Saturday.

Miller said he hoped to field a “young, more dynamic squad, with a greater capacity physically” than in his first season at the club.

He hopes his roster will be bolstered by Finnish international Aleksandr Kokko, who has agreed terms with Newcastle for the next two seasons, pending a medical. Miller was disappointed that news of Kokko’s likely recruitment was prematurely released by his Finnish Premier League club, Rovaniemen Palloseura, but he was confident the 29-year-old would be a matchwinner in the A-League.

“Obviously technically and tactically he’ll need to adapt, but he’s got a pedigree of scoring goals, and the research went into him, in terms of all the facets that we look at,’’ Miller said. “He’s an attribute that the squad doesn’t have at the moment. We’ve got a lot of mobile, dynamic players, but he can be the platform as well.’’

Newcastle scored the fewest goals in the A-League last season – 28 in 27 games – but Kokko has a strike rate of better than a goal every other game in Finland.

I get the feeling every time he does an interview he's trying to prove the extent of his vocab.

Miller says "his players need to be physically and mentally stronger".

Oh dear, so no mention of the coach being stronger and chasing a win when tied with 5 to go or subbing defenders on when behind?

He's gonna need a bigger bus this year to fit all these players under.

    This.

He learned that the players needed mentality and physicality!?! How this has been reported comes across as a blame game.

Isn't it the job of him and his team to build them up both physically and mentally?

Being able to identify your own faults is not a sign of weakness.

    Glug glug.

It's all talking in circles around the issue using key phrases and words.

And that's great, but WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN!
