Plenty of great assistant coaches can't head coach. Different Coaches require different skills from their assistant coach, it's one of the most important tools he has and some coaches now the exact attributes they need, others can tailor there needs based on who is available. Maybe Merrick is happy for the boys to have a familiar face giving them different ideas rather than add a 'getting to know you' period between them. We don't need to re-invent the wheel here to be more competitive so I can't see Zane being the worst assistant.
I don't believe the only reason we didn't want Millicic was because Lee wanted to save $80k on a payout. I think McKinna has thrown all his eggs in the Merrick basket and thinks he can get us into the 6, which is what I reckon has been stated at the minimum requirement for next year. Merrick is McKinna preserving his own job rather than rebuilding the Jets as a club. But there were definitely worse coaches then Merrick being touted.
