THEY might look graceful with a ball at their feet, but Perth Glory players were decidedly out of their depth today when turning their hands to pole dancing.

The entire Glory squad had a lesson at Bobbi’s Pole Studio, just a stone’s throw from their home ground nib Stadium.

While diminutive winger Adrian Zahra showed some talent, most of the players struggled to replicate the graceful example set by their instructors.

Glory coach Alistair Edwards said the exercise would help build the players’ core strength.

“You can do a lot of stuff on the park, which is going extremely well, but we thought we’d mix it up and it’s great to see the boys laughing and working hard as well," Edwards said.

“It’s core stability work, a lot of stretching. We’ve got a long season ahead of us and these type of things are great from bonding as well. To mix it up is great because it freshens things up."

Glory skipper Jacob Burns said the players found pole dancing tough on their bodies.

“I’ve got a whole new respect for pole dancers and how strong they really are because they weren’t many of us that could actually do any of that," Burns said.

“I think a few of the boys have pulled up sore to be honest. It’s tremendous for the core strength and something different."

Meanwhile, star Glory striker Shane Smeltz is likely to miss at least the opening month of the A-League season after having surgery on his troublesome hip.

Smeltz is still two months away from running after having the operation a fortnight ago.

Edwards said the club had hoped rest would help Smeltz overcome his hip issue before a decision was made to send him for surgery.

“We thought that having the rest in the off-season would alleviate the problem, but it was still there," Edwards said.

“For short-term it’s not so good, but for long term it’s going to be better for Shane and for the club."

    Barbarouses joins Melbourne Victory

New Zealand international Kosta Barbarouses will make a welcome return to the Hyundai A-League, after signing a three-year-deal with Melbourne Victory.

The 23-year-old forward was the leading scorer in Ange Postecoglou's all-conquering, championship winning Brisbane Roar side in 2010/11 and is currently an integral part of the New Zealand national team as it looks to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Barbarouses joins Victory after he was released from the final year of his contract with Russian National Football League side FC Alania, however the Kiwi spent last season playing in Greece after securing a loan spell with Super League side, Panathinaikos.
Postecoglou said he was looking forward to working with Barbarouses again in 2013/14.

"We are delighted to have Kosta on board with us at Melbourne Victory and he will add even more attacking flair to our team this season," Postecoglou said.

"Kosta has plenty of pace, great technical ability and is a proven scorer, having netted 12 goals the last time he played in the A-League."

“While he’s only 23, he has made over 50 appearances at Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix, so he’s certainly aware of what is required to perform at this level, and I know he’s excited to be returning to the A-League.”

Barbarouses will link up with his new Melbourne Victory teammates on Monday.

saw this morning that heart have brought back Van Schip in a technical directors role.

I'm actually really impressed at how Heart have gone about their business in the off-season. have been the real quiet achievers.

I don't think enough has been made about Kewell returning (who i still think the jerks should have pursued better than what they did)

the other players they have signed are good a-league players in murdocca, ramsey & behich returning from turkey, not so fussed about velaphi.

could be a good year for them.

Capital Football has also said it will not tolerate antisocial behaviour as it prepares to host another A-League team, the Newcastle Jets - led by former English star Emile Heskey - at McKellar Park on Wednesday night.

Haha no chance. Must say an impressive amount down there. Is Wednesday night cheap drinks night in Canberra or something?

Just seems a little extreme travelling 3 hours for a meaningless friendly midweek in freezing conditions then the long trip home I'm assuming most would have stayed the night.

Most of them in Western Sydney are on the dole anyway SD. The only thing they had to do last Thursday was spend their dole money
