As Gary's biggest fan (or at least former biggest fan), I must say, we have been playing some pretty rubbish football. Unless we're scoring goals, I find us pretty boring to watch for the most part.
It was obvious from the post-match interview that Gary sees this as well, which I guess is something, but it doesn't look like he intends to rectify it for whatever reason (club pressure, personal view, etc.).
I actually think we were playing far better last season, minus the results (although it still remains to be shown that this style will be more successful come the end of the season). At the same time, I can acknowledge that the former system as it was being implemented by Gary was never going to work.
Still, Tony Popovic seems to have done very well for himself playing this style of football, so by all means, let Gary continue to play in this way, and if we get results, we get results. I still think GVE deserves a decent amount of credit for his coaching in recent times, it's not as simple as some would like to think.
It was good to turn that performance into a win because for the first 20 we just couldn't keep the ball. The midfield diamond didn't work and I'm glad the decision was made to go back to 4-3-3. Mind you I think we would have seen more goals had Miller hit that first one in
Also did Harper say anything positive about the jets or were we "lucky", "Brisbane unlucky because they should have had all 3 points" or did he just throw his hands up and walk out?
Harper actually spoke glowingly of the jets for a change. Pregame cockerill said this game will be roar 1st and daylight 2nd but harps actually disagreed and nearly backed us in
I think I posted elsewhere but I had a bit of a flick (sic) between channels last night to see how Mel was. She is still gorgeous of course, but Tara is a model and has the better legs and arse - looked stunning last night.
Poor Mel hanging with Punter, Gilly and Flem with "celebrity" Dipper, some poof doing crowd interviews and 20,000 bogans with a boundary about 50m in from the fence - nice to see you Mel, but Tara is an ample replacement.
Oh the football - unexpected win, our defence is awesome but I still think we lack that first touch, strength and movement off the ball the better sides have. Guts isn't enough in the long run.
And have to feel sorry for Roar - they play the best football in the country and get served up a pitch like that. I hope the club and fans claim compensation.
Franjic needs a slap over the back of the head. His comments after the game were that of a spoilt brat. Firstly his hack from behind on Zads should have got him a red. His comments re us always hoofing it were also ignorent.
I thought we played a good part of our football last night with lots of balls to feet on the ground and with only the final ball coming in from wide with some air under it. Are Brisbane that frigg'n spoilt for results that a tanty is in order if teams don't come to play the style that helps them out. Perhap Franjic should take his whine up with Mulvey as to why they don't have a plan B if things are not as they anticipated.
I can't stand our muppet coach but to his credit he did change things up midway through the first half once he realised the status quo was not going to get us a result. Mulvey had no idea and no plan B.
Congrats to all the players and the coaching staff ( yes GVE inc ) for having a red hot go and getting the result.
Yep, GVE coached a good game. Players stuck to the plan. Love it when teams play one or two at the back then bitch that they get caught on the counter. Errr there's a way to avoid that.
Kanta, Zad, Beard, Kew and Reegz have been our best for weeks now. Amazing what having a strong spine does for a team.
Once again credit to GVE for sticking with the same team.
Still carried on like a pratt post game though.
Give me 10 mins so I can somehow link that back to being all Middlebys fault.
The big unanswered question from last night still remains though:
Did Superdylan go to the Grosvenor?
It's a miracle we won the game last night without a RB...
Also, Brown is embarrassing.
On the bright side, some of Taggart's touches in the second half were very impressive. He didn't have many opportunities with the ball at his feet, but once or twice some of his touches looked world class. His future is limitless.
I've always thought Franjic was a complete ****wit. Last night he confirmed it.
Zadz did very well not to lose it after that late challenge by Franjic.
Kanta was again huge in the screening midfield role. Best season to date for the club and growing with every game. I hope he wasn't injured, generally thought GVE's changes worked well last night EXCEPT bringing Cara on for Kanta!
Best game of the season (not hard I admit) for Brown and I suspect that GVE is trying to give him more time to build form before loosing 2 key midfielders through January. Still not great but at times looked OK last night, hopefully a bit of a confidence builder with 90 minutes and he can start to really turn it around from here. Instead of looking hopeless he looked average I thought. Tracked back and made some nice tackles, did some nice passes but still looked lost running at people - something that was his great strength when he came here.
This is the type of game the Jets have always lost, the one where "a win would put us in a nice position, a loss wouldn't totally kill us but would make things a lot harder". They usually waited to the "must win to stay in touch" game to pull something out, then blow the next one.
Certainly not excited but there is a resilience and a desperation in this team I haven't seen in a Jets team before.
