From the HeraldSTRIKER Nathan Burns believes his best chance of making the World Cup in Brazil rests with remaining a Newcastle Jet.
The former Socceroo’s loan deal with the Jets expires on January 11 and, if a contract extension cannot be reached, he will return to South Korean club Incheon United.Burns has made it clear his preference is to remain with Newcastle, where he is guaranteed game time as one of the club’s star players, while he made only three appearances for Incheon last season in the K-League.
Playing in the A-League also has the added bonus of being more readily visible to Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou. The former Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory coach is a vocal fan of the A-League and was at Coopers Stadium on Sunday for the Jets’ 1-0 loss to Adelaide United.‘‘I’m almost guaranteed game time if I’m fit if I stay in Australia, so I think it’s important that I’m playing,’’ Burns said.‘‘In the same sense, if you’re overseas you’re always in for a look-in as well, but you’re not sure if you’ll get game time there.‘‘I think Ange is good in the A-League as he comes and watches all the matches and keeps an eye on all the players.’’
Burns, 25, made the last of his seven Socceroos appearances in 2011, but after Australia’s rocky form that led to Holger Osieck’s sacking in October, new blood is expected for the World Cup in Brazil in June.‘‘I’m sure there will be players who miss out who probably thought they would have made it. That’s football,’’ he said. ‘‘Whoever is in form will go.’’Making sure he remains in the A-League under Postecoglou’s eyes is the most pressing issue for Burns. He has only two games left in Jets colours – against Perth on Saturday and against Melbourne Victory on January 10, both at Hunter Stadium – before his loan deal expires.
Burns is hopeful his future can be sorted this week to give himself some certainty.‘‘I’m very happy in Newcastle. The problem is there’s so many parties involved – like Newcastle have to want me, I have to want to stay here and the Korean club have to want to let me go,’’ he said.‘‘If we can get all the parties on the same wavelength, then hopefully we can come to an agreement sooner rather than later because the longer it drags on it makes it more complicated, but it’s just a matter of someone making the first move.’’Burns played his 10th game for the Jets on Sunday against his former club and his first in three weeks after he was plagued by a knee injury.
In his 82 minutes on the field, he showed glimpses of his best form down the left wing, but lacked the cutting edge in the final third to deliver a third goal for his A-League campaign.‘‘I think it was a slow-tempo game and nobody really got into it,’’ he said.‘‘I think last week everyone played fantastic around the park and I think everyone was above average, so it was disappointing that every player didn’t play to their potential.‘‘Full credit to Adelaide as they controlled the game and it was hard for us to get involved.’’
Post-match, Adelaide coach Josep Gombau was scathing of the Jets’ physical tactics.Burns was one of four Jets players yellow-carded in a game that produced 29 fouls, including 16 from Newcastle.Reds midfielder Marcelo Carrusca limped off the field with an ankle injury following a tackle from Burns that drew a yellow card.Burns said the Jets’ tactics were not targeted and did not cross the line.‘‘We didn’t go into that game being physical, that’s just how we play every game.‘‘I feel like you need to win the battle to win the game and we always go in with a fighting mentality.‘‘I think Adelaide were lacking that for a couple of weeks and they brought it to the game and matched us with the physical side of the game. ‘‘That’s the reason they got the win in the end.’’
argh my eyes!
so im confused, what position does ward play?
Burns is dreamin about being anywhere near the socceroos.
Really? Stranger things have happened. If he had a raised his game even more for the second-half of the season, scored another 6 - 10 goals, it's not that hard to imagine imo.
Who is ahead of Burns in the left-wing position?
How regularly are they playing?
Always the possibility of an injury or two in the next 6 months.
Burns will not get anywhere near socceroos as he can't pass or finish. Happy to eat my words if it means Burns starts scoring every game and putting other players in great scoring opportunities. I honestly believe he is the best dribbler in the league however his game screams RUN RUN RUN, doesn't seem to have a football brain to push him over that threshold to become a socceroo.
Yep. Who else?
Looking at the current squad + recent call-ups, the only names I'm seeing who fit the description (wide left-sided attacker) would be Bozanic, McKay (kind of), Connor Pain and Brosque (kind of).
Like I said, if there's an injury or two, and great form on his part, I think he's a real chance of making it. Criticism of that goal is unnecessary.
Rukavytsa, troisi, brad smith of Liverpool also option although more likely at left back depending on his allegiances. Feel like I'm forgetting 1 or 2 names
The other day I was thinking of how we can play Heskey, Taggart and Burns, Regan, Chapman and Jaliens. This also allows us to get rid of the liability that is Gallaway while keeping a similar midfield

Only issue with that is that a lot of the better teams in the comp play with three upfront meaning we lose the extra man in defence so should a defender stuff up we are screwed.
Middleby Gone
Lawrie Out
we cannot survive with a back 3.
Y'all be crazy if you think that playing Burns as a left-wing back is just as good as playing Gallaway.
We're equal 3rd in terms of our defence, only 1 goal behind the best defence.
We're 7th in terms of our attack, 11 goals behind the best attack.
Focus is at the wrong end of the field.
