From someone who watches a fair bit of MLS I think this is a top singing.
32 starts with NYRB last season for 5 goals and a NT call up. Not used to us signing players in recent form, even an unknown player like this.
I can't work out what position he plays apart from Midfield. Anyone else have any luck? Am assuming Steele plays an attacking role and would slot into RM
But but but he's a reject, and he's 28 so he's too old... has Stubbins even watched him play? probably not.... what kind of name is Steele? or Jonny for that matter.... what a shit signing rah rah rah......why haven't we signed messi yet? I bet middleby hasn't even watched the world cup... so much for our scouting network.... jets suck....
It seems Steele played mostly on the left. He did well in the MLS at a strong club like NYRB, which is a clear step up from the A-League.
Here are comments from random Red Bulls fans which may either provide insight or be meaningless.
Hate to see him leave but he's not at the level he was last season and the roster spot definitely helps the club. Best of luck to him.He had a 130k salary...Sucks to see him leave even if he wasn't great this year. Hopefully he got an offer somewhere else. If we had to pick someone to cut to clear cap room you'd hope he wouldn't be first. His form dropped off a lot.Hate to see him go after having a good season last year. His form did drop....wish him the bestJohnny Steeeerele ! Sorry to see him go and his form did drop. Think it is best for all. Guy gave us a fantastic 2013 and is SS winner. He was a very solid contributor last year, and scored the last goal vs Chicago in the Supporters Shield clincher.
This year, he had a good game vs Montreal. That is all.Sad to see Jonny Steele go. A great signing by Roxburgh, we got great value in the year and a bit he was here. We had a player in 2013 that was an automatic choice at leftmid.
This year, Steeles dip in performance mirrored the teams malaise. I'm hoping a new team for Steele and a (hopefully) a new ledtmid for NYRB will help spark a revival.
Thanks Jonny.I have mixed feelings. I really liked his character on the field and his work-ethic. He was a pretty big part of the first Red Bulls team to win a trophy and last year had stints where he was more than serviceable. He has been extremely poor this year however. I wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.I liked Steele but he wasn't playing very well this year. Good luck to him.He had a career year last year and locked the left mid spot down. He did a great job, especially since he was replacing a fan favorite in Lindpere. 2013 everything went right for him.
This year was a drop down from his career best. And with his salary and inconsistency this year, you had to think he was a goner in the off season anyway.
Was a good contributor and a good guy and wish him the best.
One up-side is this dudes name is ripe for chants and different banners. Hopefully he can re-gain the form he had, apparently was amazing on his first season, dropped off in his second
Just what we needed... some Steele in midfield.
Right?
Where will he play though? Unless Steele can play CM or RM it's a strange choice. Hoping he is both right and left footed. Surely Carney didn't recommend someone who can only play in his preferred position.
Maybe Carney or Steele at LB
Foxsports is saying we received 500k upfront for Brilliante with the rest to be add ons. That sounds about right
Most places have him listed him as a generic "midfielder"... wikipedia, soccerway for example. Listed as an "Attacking Midfielder" on transfermarkt with secondary positions of left mid and right mid.
And then there is Football Manager, good enough as a scouting tool that numerous clubs purchase the raw SI database to identify players.

was about to post he looks good for a-league on FM
I'm happy with brillante fee
You guys would whinge if we signed Messi FFS I'm Happy we are moving forward and signing players, the club is always going to sell the likes of Taggart, Brilliante and Birra success is not only winning it is also cashing in on selling younger players. Hopefully they sign the right ones. Hopefully Stubbins will give these guys a go to prove themselves unlike GVE who signed players and left them on the bench or in the Stands.
We seem to do quite well at keeping these signings secret. Was released from NYRB on 11/7 and was negotiating with us before that
