Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets forward Ryan Griffiths will continue to wear the Club’s number 23 jersey during the 2012/13 A-League season.

Griffiths was set to switch to number 11, but he will now stay with the jersey that he wore while scoring nine goals for the Jets last season.

“I was always very fond of the number 23, because my idol was Michael Jordan and I used to love my basketball,” Griffiths said.

“I first opted to change to 23 while I was in Romania and as soon as I whacked on that number it was like my career took off. I started scoring plenty of goals and was transferred to bigger clubs.

“Ever since then I’ve been wearing it. I wore it while I was in China and I still get messages and tweets from people overseas wearing my number 23 shirt.”

The number 23 was made famous by Jordan, but has also been worn by a number of other high-profile athletes including Shane Warne, David Beckham and LeBron James.

“There’s a lot of successful sportspeople who wear the number 23 so maybe it does have some type of lucky significance,” he said.

“It’s a number that I’m happy to stick with, because I don’t know if it’s a psychological thing or not, but I really enjoy wearing it.”

Griffiths continuing to wear the number 23 jersey means defender Connor Chapman will don the number 11 shirt throughout the 2012/13 season.

am all about the chapman's wearing 11, the gallas's wearing 10. love it!

tbh i thought, judging by tweets, ryu asked for #11. when he said he was going to wear it, he said it was his favourite number & he was more like his fave player ryan giggs, who he shares initials with.

anyway, should fill the #9 with j.griffiths, hey?
    OK

Must be a slow news week..
It doesn't bother me what number they are wearing, so long as they were giving it all on the pitch..

If Football Manager is anything to go by, the registered first team squad members must be 1-25 (or is it 23?) and no restrictions on who wears what within that 25 (23). Other numbers are reserved for promoted NYL players or something.

That or the FFA learnt their lesson by letting Oar be #121, and all the other A-Leagueroos in the 80s.

yeah some stupid rule about each player in qualification had to have their own unique number, that's the good old AFC for ya.

Ryan Griffiths' favourite player is Michael Jordan.

    Michael Jordan, MJ.

    MJ, Michael Joel.

    Michael Joel Griffiths.

The club is announcing the signing of Griff in 23 days time.

    Hail Griff!
