It's not so much the rumour but the wage they are prepared to pay that is striking.

More than most A-League journeymen get in a season.

Considering Mooy & Williams will be on Reportedly $300,000 and come under the cap you would imagine there going to need a few neville nobody's on next to nothing.

Does anyone know how much we would have to spend if we get rid of Heskey? The idea of replacing Heskey with Drogba makes me very happy, I know it's a stretch but him and Griffo did used to play together for a while so maybe Griff can convince him to come to us. A stretch I know but I can dream

He's a marquee player so the amount is irrelevant... just whether or not Tinks/HSG has the bankroll to fund it which is highly unlikely.

We won't get a marquee player this year, methinks.

nothing, he's off contract and already headed home.

We still wont get a "Name" marquee, if even a visa marquee.

I'd be surprised if we even spent the entire cap.

I'd be shocked if Mooy or Williams were getting 300k. Mooy has been a bench / impact player for a good part of the season and Williams is too hot and cold to be commanding that sort of money.

In fact I'd say 200k a season would be still too much.

Surely you mean a broich or Berisha rather than a player past any kind of decent contribution like jardel. But seriously Drogba and lampard would dominate this league more than any player has before. These guys are by no means past it!

And really look at our record trying to sign players like that. De Groot, Jesper (I no they weren't marquees but neither were broich or Berisha when they got here) and Zura all for example.
Would you really rather take a risk on a player like that?

Mooy is nearly definately on 300k. Not sure about Williams, but he was their Aust Marquee this season (confirmed not for next season though) and to be fair had a great year in which he was up there for golden boot in a pretty awful team (maybe awful team is too harsh, but yaknow what I'm saying).

Zura was signed for us as a marquee.

Drogba, Lampard, Forlan, pretty much all the big names being thrown around by other clubs currently would abolutely slay the league IMO.

Jimmy Jeggo to Adelaide:

Adelaide United has pinched midfielder James Jeggo from A-League rival Melbourne Victory.

The 22 year-old spent the past four seasons with Victory, playing 30 A-League games and scoring twice.

Austrian-born Jeggo, who moved when young with his parents to Australia, was lured as the type of player needed for Adelaide's possession-styled game, Reds coach Josep Gombau said.

“I am extremely lucky to be joining a club like Adelaide United,” said Jeggo.

“The football they play is at another level and I am excited to be a part of it. Now I get to work under Josep (Gombau) where I know he will help me improve as a player.

“Adelaide has a great history and is a very successful club. It’s also a great city and everytime I’ve played there I’ve enjoyed the atmosphere from the fans.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Melbourne Victory for what they’ve done for me and for providing me the opportunity to become a professional footballer.”

Jeggo has signed a one-year deal and will link up with the Reds for pre-season training on 16 June.

"I like the way that he plays because he's a player that is always thinking in attack but also he's strong in defending," Gombau said in a statement on Thursday.

Jeggo also played four AFC Champions League games for Victory.

“Jimmy has been a pleasure to work with during his time at Melbourne Victory and was an important part of our recent A-League and Asian Champions League campaigns,” Victory coach Kevin Muscat said.

“He is a great guy to have around the place and was very popular in the changeroom, so we certainly wish him all the very best for the future."

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1188163/Jeggo-trades-in-Victrory-for-the-Reds

Interesting, I thought he was one of the best young prospects in the season prior to this one. Not sure where he was at this season, but I think he'll fit in very well with Gombau's system at Adelaide.

Great signing.

He has done an interview with one of the young journos down here... http://footballcentral.com.au/one-on-one-with-gombau-a-glimpse-into-the-future/#.U2Mucvk9jTp

“For me football is not attack or defence, football is something together…A team is a team and the team attack and defend together.”

Gombau suggested that speed of ball circulation was where his players needed to develop, and offered an insight into his attacking philosophy. “We need to make the same movements but faster, this for me is where I am more concentrating…For me it’s better to win a game 4-3 than 1-0. We spend more time attacking because attacking and goals is what people like.”

and

Gombau has mentioned in recent weeks that the next part of his style of play is to implement a 3-4-3 formation, and he suggested that the team would alter between the two depending on the type of opposition they were up against. Gombau also said that a shift in formation could also help his side to break down stubborn defences.

“At Barca we worked two styles, two systems. One is 1-4-3-3, one is 1-3-4-3…This depends how many strikers that they (the opposition) have…I want to work in 1-3-4-3 for these games were the other team just defends, they don’t allow us spaces.”

:rof: straight outta catalonia

Gombau's "system" is to attempt to play a really high defensive line (hence why they get so many cards, because the defenders are roped into fouling promising counter attacks), have the keeper play as a libero, get lots of passing done & basically let Spanish guys rape your defensive line.

Chapman probably wants out since kew said he wants to, and has been since Mitchell got a first team gig, playing on the right side CB. The problem with having kew is that it blocks Chapman from playing in his preferred position on the right. It will come down to whether Stubbins wants Kew to phil the leftside CB position to accommodate Chapman or Regan, or if he wants to sign a decent left footed CB, Adrian Madaschi would be my pick of free agent aussie left footed CB’s. The last thing you want is to use 2 visa spots on your CB’s.

Brisbane Roar just won the comp with two right footed CBs. Having one left footed centreback has never really been a priority to me.

I thought Madaschi was a lock for Perth Glory, but they went & signed Djulbic. So unless Thwaite leaves, which I highly doubt, I assume they won't sign Madaschi. Could be a good pickup.

In saying all that, I don't see the worry about using 2 visa spots in one position TBH. Especially if we roll like our team has been, and not even filling our visa quota for a couple of years.

Maybe Big Phil will turn out to not as much of a dick as our previous managers and just actually pick his two best CD's and tell them to play with one of them on the left.

That also being said Mitchell is off contract so hopefully Big Phil sends him to Centrelink anyway

Yep. And it's not like Chapman is horrendously one footed. Guys got mad on the ball skills compared to Mitchell/Regan and that might be more the thinking rather than wanting a left footer - GVE and Zane might have preferred one enforcer type in Mitchell/Regen (let's be honest, both much closer to the definition of no nonsense defenders than anything else) to go with Huge Aliens.

Though to counter my own point... didn't we play with Regan + Mitchell when Kew was suspended?

Couldn't agree more, it was nonsense brought in by GVE and we will just have to wait and see what Big Phils ideas are, Madaschi was just a thought of a current free agent who could fill that role if we wanted, would also help with the leadership and experience level of the team.

n saying all that, I don't see the worry about using 2 visa spots in one position TBH. Especially if we roll like our team has been, and not even filling our visa quota for a couple of years.
My concern would be the drain on salary cap, visa players should be your more expensive players, I don't believe we will be spending the entire salary cap and instead would rather what salary we have allowed for in our budgets to be used to reinforce the gaping hole in our front third creativity. I'd also tend to think the left back would be more likely to require a visa spot as how long has it been since we had a solid left back, gallaway is not the answer.

This little piece of info if correct from David Davutovic also concerns me, as this is precisely how Traore was picked up by GCU, bizarre really if true as its one of the better ways of getting AFC players that might be on the fringe of their first team.

In the Australian phenomenon that is the knee-jerk reaction, the A-League (quietly) introduced a stupid rule last year whereby U-19 oseas players can't be signed - the thinking is that they take the place of young Aussie players. A coach will either play young kids or won't, a better rule is lifting the quota of U21 players a) in squad; b) on the pitch at any given time ie. 3 (More radical!). Quality young oseas players should be welcomed with open arms.

To be fair, most other countries don't allow U18 players to be signed. Isn't that exactly what Barcelona got done for? Changing it to U19 isn't really much of an issue, IMO.

I think his point was that if you are going to use the whole cap, you wouldn't use it on one higher priced foreigner if you could get two adequately skilled locals at a lower price.

Personally, I don't know if low key foreigners would be signing on mega bucks compared to the locals. Maybe someone like Kew who has a pretty healthy pedigree but some of the complete unknowns that have signed here wouldn't be on massive coin to start with. Berisha for example - you would have had to pay more for an Australian of his quantity at the time he signed. Obviously as MV marquee that's not the case now but back then he wouldn't have demanded a massive wage compared to signing a known Australian quality.

Yes they do receive the $2.55 mill but no where does it say they have to spend the entire cap on the HAL squad, merely that the club distributions will be used for player payments, they are required to spend the salary floor for the HAL for which I believe sits at $2m. There should be no reason that the club cannot use the remaining club distribution for paying the youth league players, reducing the overall running costs of the club.

As I understand it the linking of the club distribution was to create greater contract security for the players so whilst the FFA & PFA stated it would be used to fund the salary cap I'd be very surprised if any left over club distribution after player contracts have been honoured could be with held from a club because they elected to spend the salary floor instead of the cap

http://m.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/a-league-collective-bargaining-agreement-extended/69828

middleby has specifically spoke about recruitment and the clubs desire to work to a total player budget, I would be surprised looking at the players we have on our books to find $2.5m worth of players just in the HAL squad.

The point Davutovic made about making it mandatory to play U21 players in the squad makes sense.

The point he made about it opening it up for foreigners to come here well he can go get ****ed on that.
No way in the world should we be using a rule like that to allow foreigners to come here and play and negate our potential NT pool of players.

FFS the FFA should have now figured out why we can't find a left back in this country and that is because the clubs won't play them. They constantly keep allowing clubs to waste Visa players on blokes like Byun Fabio Cassio etc and as a result there is barely an Aussie playing left back worthy of selection for NT.

Then you add in gooses like GVE who play blokes like Thommo Gallaway and Pepper etc at Left Back and then is it any wonder we can't find a left back to play for the Socceroos

He will go to the Championship or lower EPL team

Really? I thought he had little interest in playing competitively & constantly. I thought he was happy to take it easy, lessnpressure, etc after his family issues. Hence why he was happy to be number 3 or 2 at pool.

I really wouldn't be surprised if he does a culina-esque early move back home

Bloke is 3rd Choice at Liverpool.

Seriously doubt lower end EPL teams are scouting blokes in his position for a gig. Would almost be akin to Jets signing someone like Jurman for a Stoke or Palace to sign Liverpool nobodies.

Bloke would be lucky to get a gig at a Championship club let alone a good one

He is second choice actually, and played well in the cup competitions. Reina may or may not come back from Napoli, but we will find that out in a few months.
And being a Liverpool supporter, I have actually watched him play. He is good enough for the Championship, he just needs to play consistently which isnt going to happen at Liverpool unless Mignolet gets a long term injury and they dont bring in anyone else.

Sunderland signed Arsenal's third choice keeper Vito Mannone last year.. That went pretty well for them. Our 2nd choice looks likely to be signed by a champions league team. Leicester need a new keeper if Kasper doesn't resign so i wouldn't be surprised if he ended up first choice at a lower team in England. He needs some consistent time playing to see how good he really is. I think if he doesn't make the grade at his next club he will come back home... He can be our second choice behind BK.

Here's a defensive signing I wouldn't say no to....

http://www.millwallfc.co.uk/news/article/four-to-leave-this-summer-1544490.aspx

Australian defender Lowry, 24, first joined Millwall on loan from Aston Villa in November 2011 before making a permanent switch the following January. He was a near ever-present in 2012/13, helping The Lions to the FA Cup Semi-Finals, and grabbed two goals in his 82 games for Millwall.

Here is an idea for a player I would love too see Jets at least make an attempt at getting as a marquee:
http://www.goal.com/en-my/news/3896/malaysia/2014/04/21/4765260/tmj-explain-baihakki-and-aimar-exits

Pablo Aimar just got released from his club in Malaysia. It's a long shot and highly unlikely, and the Jets most likely aren't even going to be getting a new marquee to replace Heskey.

No-one knew Broich, Berisha and very few had heard of Ono.

Marquees can just as easily be used for promotion purposes by no one knowing who they are and then getting see what they can do.

I'd rather a "no-name" marquee who dominates the league than another big name who does **** all.

I would say he is about as well known to the average fan as Ono or Engelaar is, yet both of those were treated as big deals, which in turn made fans who had no clue who they were believe they were a big deal. People will still get excited about somebody as long as they are aware that he is a somebody. A good example is if you were at a festival, and everyone was crowding around one specific person and getting shit signed and getting pictures, people who have never even heard of them will still go and get pictures and shit signed because they know that this guy is a somebody

Squad size or salary floor?
Clubs in the HAL usually keep a couple of squad spots up their sleeve for January transfer time to try and fix whatever is not working before its too late for the finals.
I'd be more concerned at using the minimum salary floor but we are the jets and HSG is running the show so I expect we will run at the salary floor with min squad. Might work out OK should we sign an awesome first team and just pray we have no injuries for the season.

Precisely, people need to give up on this idea that marquees need to convert sports fans, get a marquee who can do the business on the pitch, maybe with a bit of personality and the off field stuff will sort itself out. There is a reason griffo is loved by the newy press, he has character, something severally lacking in modern sportsmen.

I think a central defender with the ability to step into centre mid when required is a massive bonus. Especially when you only have small squads and benches. McKain would be a great replacement for Mitchell and Chapman.

Do we have any other central defenders in the youth league that can step up as 4th choice??

Yep, Archie was recently re-signed for 1 year at a reduced wage. He was used relatively sparingly last season, and I expect this season they will phase him out completely.

The interesting thing about signing Milligan to marquee wages is it's almost certain another loan-type deal for Troisi won't happen.

Zads offers dynamism and legs in midfield but that's about it. He was our second highest booked player and has been in the top two each of years he has been here.

His final ball doesn't really happen and he is good at a lot, not great at anything in particular.

But he was our captain and he served us well. If it looked like he wasn't going to get another contract after this year so be it. We've had the prime of his years I reckon.

Thanks for your service zads and good luck in Perth. Build those frequent flyer miles buddy.
