Dissecting small clips that don't show the full game to create hype is the best way to judge a foreign signing haha.

Lol, Russian League highlights (he's in for about 30 seconds). Rubin Kazan get a player sent off after 35, very little happens. Beka comes on late, gets involved in the lead up and scores the simplest goal of his life.

Can score a goal without kicking a goalkeeper in the face, which is good considering our history.

Will wait and see how we set up around him.
Could turn out to be a Berisha, in so much as didn't score often overseas but tears it up here. Or he could be Guy Bates.

He was AO Xanthi's 3rd best scorer in the league from what i'm reading (the club only scored 24 goals all season compared to 35 for the league winners). Greek 2nd division is a slight step up from the A League and Xanthi finished 2nd but lost the promotion play off game, I think.
Looks like he could definitely do well here considering the leagues he's played in and his age. A season or 2 banging them in for us and he can go back to a 2nd or 3rd tier european league at 25/26 yrs old. Or he might be our Berisha and keep getting national team call ups whist enjoying the Newy life, lol.

I'll stop now. But this is the 2nd of the promotion play off game against Panetolikos (2nd last team from the top division) that AO Xanthi won 2-1. Ultimately they stayed down on away goals (2-2 after a 1-0 loss away) but it shows Beka scoring in the 71st minute and the overall level of play betwen the best teams in the 2nd division and the worst from the 1st division. Our boy came off the bench, but scored a good goal and the overall play looked a level or two above what we play here, from the absolutely miniscule amount i've seen.

Arthur Diles has just come to us from Xanthi as well so he would have worked quite closely with him
I also find it a bit interesting that we've signed him for two years, feels like we usually end up signing these internationals for one year and then they wash out so I'm happy seeing us commit to something slightly longer

Does anyone know anymore about his $200 million fraud case? Last I can see he's hiding in Greece, after he watched them play their promotion play off games. Can't make any sense of what happened after that.
Maybe, he's looking to buy us out? Or maybe he's gonna lose Xanthi FC and is hooking Arthur up before he does?

We're taking the approach we took under Miller. He was brought in when there was a chance to overhaul the squad. We did and gave everyone contracts within the length of the manger's.
A lot of central defenders on the books. No chance NTS is coming back and I dare say we will see Johnny K or Donachie leave.

Pretty confident Donachie will go back to Victory or abroad. Champness will probably stay at Roar as well. So, we just need to resign Stametelopolous (don't make me google it to check spelling) and another Castro style forward/attacking mid and i'm happy enough for now.

Actually, we probably need those 2 plus another attacking option/backup 9. Just checked and we've only got Yuel, Archie and Kosta. Unless Ingham has been signed for the RW spot or we are moving to a back 3.

Looks like NTS won't be offered a new contract. If so that is really poor form, I get the whole thing about moving in a new direction but he has been a consistent performer for years now and deserved at least another season.
Matt Jurman is a good player, but he has played for 5 different clubs in the last 5 years. It's hard to suggest he is in for the long haul, in that case it was probably off better sticking with NTS for another season at least

There's 7 years difference between them.
No doubt NTS has been a loyal servant to the club but there comes a time where the two must go their separate ways.
And sure Jurman has played for 5 clubs in 5 seasons, but if you go back a little more he's signed for 7 clubs in 13 seasons. Not that bad. ANd if he does leave, we've signed the entire back catalogue of A-League defenders so we have successions plans in place.

If I was a betting man I'd think Papas would be picking the best leader in the group regardless of any local ties so any of the new players would be a chance (and I agree with that).
If they buckle to the minority cry about 'someone local' they may bring in that club captain bullshit position and let it be Kanta or Hoff.
The more I read about this Papas fella hes all about getting it right on the park and not bothering with sentiment. Its what good organisations do. Leave the emotion to the fans.

I agree. It needs to be the best for the role.
My bet is Jurman (at this stage). Certain he took that role at WSW previously. I think Elsey is quite a talker, too, but I think is too eratic for the role. Calm heads and all that are needed in the role.

I put this post up a few days ago and I suppose NTS didn't get much symphony in response from the forum. All I'm saying is that NTS has been a loyal servant and an adopted novacastrian. He deserved the right to have one more season in my opinion. Surly they could have kept him and brought in replacements for Boogaard and Jackson to provide competition.
There is a good chance he will end up at a rival NSW A League club. The supporters surely can't whinge as we have released him.
Jack Simmons is a strange one. So highly rated 2 years ago but now back in the NPL. Would have thought Papas could have been the man that could have pushed his game on? Being a local, hopefully he gets an opportunity back at the Jets in the future.
NTS was good this year but if people are being honest with themselves the difference between the last two seasons for Topor was greater than any other back to back seasons. His turning and chasing ability was slower, seem to get caught out more and his distribution this past season was many times horrendous.
Guess the club figured another par season or even a lesser one was not going to cut it given the options presented to them.
The most unfortunate thing is circumstances sadly haven't allowed for a proper and well earnt send off. Thats football

Daniel Sturridge has been clubless for a while and recently invited to train with a Spanish team in 2nd tier.
Injury prone, but I dare say the demands of a league are not the same as his EPL loads. Also not much football in the last few years. Probably would want too much money too.

Happy for people to modify this with a general consensus on players best positions, especially youngsters.
But this is what I am seeing as a quick depth chart.
GK - Duncan, Noah
RB - Ingham, *Hoffman
CB - Jurman, Elsey, Warland, Al-Taay
LB - Mauragis
CDM - Kanta, Devlin, O'Doherty
CAM - Thurgate, *Kosta
RW - Hoffman, *Ingham, Kosta, Champness, Archbold,
LW - Yuel, *Kosta, *Archbold,
ST/CF - Beka, *Yuel, Goodwin.
*Second position that a player can also do a job at, but not their best position.

So,
GK is sorted.
RB is sorted.
CB is more than sorted.
LB needs someone else, either a backup if Pappas rates Mauragis or an older starter if needed.
If we go to a back 3/5, we are sorted for all 5 positions because we have other options for LWB in Kosta or Archbold.
CDM is sorted.
CAM definitely could use a visa signing to bolster our attack. Thurgate can be an amazing backup or move to an 8 if we slant the midfield and leave Devlin as a single pivot.
CF/ST is probably sorted given Salary constrants and other needs.
RW looks sorted if Champness stays.
LW looks weak and needs a guaranteed starter.
I hope we resign Stamo as a proper backup ST with Goodwin being the longterm option after another season working his way off the bench.

In the herald today they mentioned that Devlin might not be playing for us due to offers from Europe, I understand he’d want to take that offer but as a club we really really should be pushing to keep him. Many clubs seemed to want his signature and somehow we got it, be disappointing to see him go before we even got anything out of him

IMO if he has an offer to play in Europe we as fans should be happy to see him go there. We want Aussies playing at the highest level possible and the A League is about as low as it goes.
The club just needs do it's absolute best to convince him that when he's done in Europe he should come back and pay us back for letting him chase him dream.
I agree that it will be sad to not see him play for us tho.

Perhaps it's classic Jets... Probably gave him an exit clause that if he got a euro offer he could terminate his contact so he's a free transfer, the sort of clause other clubs wouldn't agree to, but Jet's would.
Shame about Griffiths getting screwed out of a job so the parasite Dean's can be handed another position for him to **** up, all because they ****ed up giving him a coaching contract.
Love the mutual terminations so our owners can top up their squads with our players again. What happened to transfer fees coming in for the 2021 season? who needs to worry about that when you can have a feeder team instead.

Just found this - https://www.a-league.com.au/salary-cap-system
At all times during the Season, a Club’s A-League Player Roster must have:
a minimum of 18 Players;
a maximum of 23 Players;
a minimum of 2 Goalkeepers;
a minimum of 3 Australian Players aged 23 or under;
and a maximum of five foreign players.
Guest Players sit outside the Club’s A-League Player Roster. Players on a Club’s Y-League Player Roster, including Scholarship Players, are also eligible to participate in the A-League.
So the missing part is keeping track of how the club classify contracts when players are signed/re-signed.

They don't really have a history of promoting players from their youth set up so not really any long term players on their list last year to qualify for Loyalty players.
They do however have a few players U23 that would qualify for the Homegrown unlimited... Atkinson (14 games), Colakovski (21) and Metcalfe (24). That's 3 handy players to pay completely outside the cap.
They had eight scholarship players.
They almost certainly used two designated players.
That leaves 15 players to split the $2.1m cap, unlimited funds on the three U23's and two DP's.
Find it hard to believe they could spend $3.3m on 5 uncapped players though but who knows.

I want to give a summary of the immense contribution Nikolai Topor-Stanley has given to our club:
His debut for the club was against Beijing Guoan FC, an away fixture in the Asian Champions League
Across two stints, he made 202 appearances consisting of 198 starts and 4 substitute appearances. This is the second highest number of appearances in our history and equates to appearing in 35% of the matches in the club's history since 2000.
He played a total of 17964 minutes - more than 2000 minutes more than the next closest.
He made 189 A-League appearances, 5 in FFA cup and 8 in the Asian Champions League.
He scored 9 goals (8 in A-League and 1 in FFA Cup) and provided 6 assists
He captained the team on 37 occasions. This is 6th in the overall standings behind Boogaard, Roberts, Zadkovich, North and Thompson.
He was involved in 48 clean sheets during his time with the club
He was never sent off during his time with the Jets.
The win percentage with NTS in the team was 37%
following his return to the club, Nikolai only missed 135 minutes of competitive football. He wasn't available for the Round of 16 clash v Edgeworth in the FFA Cup (90 minutes) and was a halftime substitute against Adelaide (45 minutes) in the Quarter Final of the same competition.

Story on Warland
A-League: Perth wonder boy out to kick on with Newcastle Jets
James Gardiner
RILEY Warland was only 16 when Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri plucked the defender from the under-18s to train with the first team.
"It was around Christmas time and I went up and enjoyed it," Warland said. "Training alongside the likes of [German international] Andre Schrrle ... I did well and got invited back."
Warland spent a year at Fulham before getting homesick and returning to Perth.
Though happy for the opportunity at Craven Cottage, the Jets recruit was quick to point out that what happened in the past means nothing now.
After two seasons at his home-town club where he made five A-League appearances, Warland is desperate to kickstart his career and believes Newcastle is the ideal environment.
"Going away to the UK, it was a great opportunity to see where I was at in my own age group," he said. "This is where I am focused now.
"I got a call from the boss (Jets coach Arthur Papas) asking what I wanted to do. I was in a bit of a pickle back at home. All I wanted to do is play football and he said I can give you the chance to play.
"He was really good to talk to and it was quite an easy choice to come here."
Warland,19, is part of a new rearguard at the Jets after the departure of senior duo Nigel Boogaard (retired) and Nikolai Topor-Stanley (released) and long-term back-up Lachy Jackson, who is now starting for Suwon in the K-League.
He is joined by fringe Socceroo Matt Jurman and Adelaide regular Jordan Elsey. Jurman started training on Tuesday and Elsey is due to arrive next week.
"I had a little taste of it (the A-League) and am hungry for more," Warland said. "The boss has done really well in recruiting who we needed to. There are great players around me like Matt Jurman. The amount of games that he has played and where he has played in the world, he has a lot of experience.
"When you step over the white line onto the pitch, I think everybody is equal. I will give 100 per cent every day and give them no reason to not pick me.
"I am quite a young player but I do aspire to help everyone around me. A lot of communication being a defender, being strong on the ball and being a good leader on the pitch."
Warland has been accompanied to Newcastle by his girlfriend and they have settled in Hamilton.
"Newcastle is a great place to be," he said. "It is very similar to Perth in a lot of ways. I have found settling here very easy. Everyone has been really welcoming."
While ripping in to pre-season training, Warland has been keeping a close eye on the Olyroos' progress in Tokyo and admitted that Paris 2024 was goal.
"It does motivate me seeing former teammates and boys who I played against in the season just gone, doing well," he said. "It definitely gives me motivation. It is something I aspire to do later in my career."
Warland is a among a host of players hoping to kickstart their careers with Newcastle.
Former Socceroos striker Eli Babalj has been training since the start of pre-season.

Devlin is seemingly a lock to leave
Champness still wants to go back to Brisbane.
Eli Babalj, Tommy Semmy, and Kosta Grozos are on training contracts and all looking to earn a full-time deal.
Yared Abetew is also trialling with us.
We have up to 8 places to fill on the roster.
And according to Peter Petrov on Twitter, we are one of the clubs looking to sign Jacob Pepper whose contract with Madura was terminated
I have no issues with letting go of Champness if he really doesn't wanna be here. Don't want Babalj or Pepper, and would be okay with taking Semmy (would be a visa player), Grozos and Abetew

I do have a problem with letting Champness go, I think we're going to be a lot thinner in attack than we might be led to believe, and trying to get Champness back on board by convincing him it's worth his while to be part of the team should have been a priority (at least until Wankerers then stole him off us on a free transfer halfway through the season...)

Agree on Champness, after last season we learned that if players don't want to be around their performances drop.
Bit hard to get pumped for the new season with all the Covid19 around. Plus I think the new owners have really shown their hand. It's all about the business side of things now, as apposed to the previous Newcastle Jets setup.
Out goes Lawrie and Joel, The old administration. Out also goes around half the squad including senior players Topor Stanley and O'Donovan.
In comes a new coach and a heap of new players. It's clear that the New owners aren't really concerned about having a huge Newcastle flavour about the side, this appears to be about getting a new squad in that will be competitive and give talent from all around Australia an opportunity to play and possibly put themselves in the shop window for overseas transfers which will benefit the club and players.
The only reason Hoffman and Kanta are still around is that they are both still under contract. They would want to have bumper seasons otherwise they will be gone at season's end.

Papas will be familiar with him from with them both being at Yokohama so he will know what the coach expects with and without the ball. He’s an international for a top African country. This is exciting from Papas and the Jets.

From the today's Herald article:
Meanwhile, talks are continuing with wantaway winger Joey Champness.
The Newcastle Herald understands that Jets are not willing to release the 24-year-old to another A-League club, with a potential sale overseas a possibility.

He does want to go to Brisbane, the Jets are trying to sell him to an overseas club to get a fee for him.
I can only assume that if he doesn't move overseas or agree to play for us we'll release him. I can't see Pappas wanting him involved if he doesn't want to be here, seems to intelligent for that.

Joey has 4 options here IMO, Find a club overseas and get sold for a fee, Buy out his contract like Ibini did, Suck it up, put his head down and have a good last season with us or finally just sit out the season doing **** all and ruining his career and then leaving for free to a new club. Under no circumstances can we just release him for free to another aleague club. With did him a solid with his music stuff so no-longer owe him anything.

If he doesn't want to play for us, we will release him. You and everyone else needs to deal with it. The sooner the better.
I'd lose a lot of faith if we tried to force a player to lose an entire season of his career out of spite.
And if anyone is pissed that we are losing a talented player for free, now you understand why we need to allow transfer fees between clubs. It's the only way to make contracts have any meaning to the club who's offering it.

100% agree.
After the music tantrum and the Brisbane tantrum, a bit of gratitude to the club that allowed him to do as he pleased (with nothing in return so far) would be appreciated.
A-league transfer fees is a fantastic idea, but it's not a thing yet, so...
BTW, how much would Brisbane be willing to pay to have him? My guess is, not much.
Bremsstrahlung

Agree transfer fees should be allowed. Clubs don’t HAVE to pay to get players, but in these circumstances it provides some bargaining for both sides.
Roar offer us compensation to secure him. If they don’t, we can use that to say look JOWIC, they aren’t even prepared to offer any $$ for you, we want you here etc.
It’s always a contentious issue. When the club owners don’t have unlimited money and squads, it doesn’t make much sense to keep players against their will. Understand playing hard ball to an extent, but unless you’re willing to pay them for doing SFA, PFA will storm in and demand a release anyway.
It gets to the point of why do we want him if he doesn’t want to be here? I personally would rather somebody else that buys into what pappas is spruiking and wants a crack. Not JOWIC wishing he was elsewhere.

I'm OK with Pepper re-signing. There is a depth issue in midfield and he could add to that - we have Thurgate, O'Doherty, Penha, Kanta and potentially Archbold and Al-Taay.
Archbold is filling in out wide and Kanta can't be relied upon. We have zero real depth for O'Doherty or Thurgate. Pepper makes sense.

I think we might be moving towards a proper 4-3-3 formation.
O'Doherty at the base, Boumal and Thurgate as the 8s and then three forwards ahead of them, none of which are traditional 9s like Roy. Or something similar depending on who signs.
Am I right in there being 1 more visa player to be announced once they're cleared? I think we've replaced every position besides another CDM and another Striker? So hopefully the new guy is either someone to control the midfield or a different style of striker to Beka.

According to Rob Dillon in the herald, "Penha shapes as a direct replacement for Cameron Devlin"
I was of the belief Penha was more of a CAM, so either Dillon is off base, they viewed Devlin as the type of midfielder that would get up the pitch and they wanna use Penha in that role or Penha isn't as attacking based as we thought.
I swear the number started at 3 visa players but slowly got changed to 2, so one of them might have fallen through at some stage.
Whilst I agree about another striker, I honestly think the club is gonna wanna push Goodwin to get game time, so he might take priority as the backup striker. The crowd really got behind him at the backend of the season.
Also saw in the herald that Babalj and Semmy are still on training contracts, I have a feeling if we sign anymore attacking based players they are gonna be it. The other 2 signings should be to strengthen up the mids I would say

I think this role will be vital and we need a more experienced option. Might have to look overseas because I can't see an option locally unless we look at pepper and, as much as I'd like another newy bloke in the team, he doesn't have the desired quality we need in that role imo. Hard to say. They just haven't boasted about anyone before they had the signature unlike previous management. They may have lost 20 that we never heard about.
This is the first year since we made the GF when we have had more than one real option in the forward third. Will see how they actually perform however. Keeping expectations low after years of experience is the best approach to minimise dissappointment.

The very same, mate of mine said he saw a registration document with Semmy’s name on it.
Not a bad signing, I mean we are now fully covered in the attacking areas, one good midfield signing and this team has really come together. Fingers crossed all these international signings can actually play tho lol

Probably means Eli Babalj has been unsuccessful or has earned a contract elsewhere.
Only 5k members allowed to watch above mentioned squad. That could put a real dampen on the membership drive unfortunately.
Credit to the club for having a real crack in the lead up to this season re squad but this announcement is dead set pants for the club.

It's on most news feeds now - and they have to be vaccinated as well.
I would expect it to be short term though and be increased when they get to the 80% in November, so a good thing to delay the season 3-4 weeks.

Perhaps longest serving members in first? Or newest, because the longest will always renew no matter what so keep your newest customers happy.
in all seriousness, they did it last year so they'll do it again the same way. Not everyone will take it up or can take it up
Unfortunately for the club though anybody who has not yet taken membership but was planning to this could put the brakes on that.
Mattiske and the club needed this restriction like a hole in the head.

Yet another stunningly stupid and illogically thought out idea from an asshole in a suit that has no impact on their own personal circumstances.
5000 at Jets stadium or 5000 at stadium australia seems really well thought and a massive trust of science.
Dear God these people are clowns.
And as always, they throw it back in the hands of the individual business for them to implement or face fines and more lockdowns.
Scum.

A-league should work with Paramount+ to give members a free (or dirt cheap) A-league subscription for the duration of the competition.
Members should be on rotation at the stadium, so in the worst case they'll be able to attend every 2nd game.
Considering many members don't attend anyway and the total is likely to be well below 10000, it could easily be 2 games on/1 game off. Not the end of the world.

5000 people is the number of people you can have at a stadium when we reach 70% double dose.
When we reach 80% double dose (maybe only a few weeks after 70%) there will be a further easing of restrictions.
I would expect the 5000 number will be increased when that happens.

jets had a total of 5000 fans attend last season to all games, so nothing to worry about, plenty of room, even if we hit 100% vaccinations, they still will have 10 under age squadron kiddies turn up to each game:deadhorse:
I reckon Cricket Australia would be already lobbying for change which will assist FA on this issue.

Jets chucked up another signing hint, apparently it’s Kosta Grozos if all the comments are to be believed.
He is a midfielder but I’ll be a little disappointed if that’s the ‘replacement’ for Devlin, but we also still have another roster spot so another signing could still be on the horizon

There's a rumour that we held talks with Jack Wilshere. But absolutely no idea how truthful that is. Don't know how I'm going to make it at games with a throbbing erection for the full 90 mins if this happens, but I'm willing to give it a go.

That would be amazing. Instead we announce a third choice goal keeper

With Noah James going to WSW and Vedran leaving WSW.
There’s the Jack Wilshere article
