Jeeeez Stanny, you are a hard man to please..
Lets face it, he's not coming out here. Its the Jets. But I'm a big enough masochist to hope..

Yes, he's made from balsa wood.. But as if he wouldn't absolutely walk it through this league..
You get the sort of abysmal refs (I'm looking at you Kurt Ams) that we have already, protecting blokes like Castro, Ninko, etc, then I don't see why it would be such a bad idea..

I was reading how he almost gave up football recently, he's talked about how much abuse his family have copped for his injuries ("Jack Wheelchair" I believe kids were taunting his son)..
A nice little beach-change and a confidence booster playing in this league could be the best thing for him..

His body wont cope with our hard pitches and the way Papas wants to play, plus no way he settles for aleague wages and we aint gonna offer marquee ones. Im hard to please because we constantly promise better times but offer up dross. Papas had been spot on with his recruitment so far IMO, No need for Wilshire

Couldn't agree more, Blokes with his class with there instinct and vision see the game seconds quicker than your average player which helps them avoid the hackers in the A League. Playing in this league and staying sound and a great lifestyle for his family and he could do much worse than come here. I read in a article he was not motivated by the coin for his next journey just the opportunity to play football and re-establish himself and enjoy the game again.

Everything he needs on and off the park could be had here if money is not his primary motivator.

Firstly, it's not going to happen.

Jack didn't have any injuries last season, he just didn't play every week because Bournemouth had 7 CMs. The drop off in pace between here and England would give him another few years of playing, we'd just need to convince him to come out here for the lifestyle. His passing and dribbling would be something this league has never seen.

But, again, it's not gonna happen.

Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Wello in hubs. Sorted. NSW won't lock down again once they hit the vaccination targets. I don't think Vic will either. No need to travel into the states more likely to go back into lockdown.

Random thoughts off the top of the head:
Wello in the gong
Reds in maybe Albury
Perth in Canbera (but I'd prefer Adelaide personally)
Brisbane in Ballarat

You might lose crowds if restrictions come back, but you could still run the comp.

Stumbled across jets training yesterday. Noticed that Eli Babalj was still training with them. Maybe they are keeping him around incase they can offload someone like petratos. Eli's hold up play and body work is still great and he was getting around the field a lot better than I thought he would.
Beka looks a very smart striker with his runs and link up play. Looks like he will spend a lot of games trying to draw big defenders out of place to create space midfield runs.
Overall the game play that I watched looked very free and fluid in terms of positioning with the ball and retrieving the ball once lost was very urgent.

Confirmed via Email.

I'm actually ok with his signing. Sounds like they made him jump through hoops to earn his spot, and if I remember him properly, he could be a good Plan B. If we can't break teams down with pressure and pace, he gives us some height and ability to pull the ball down and link with others. Plus, surely his finishing must be as good or better than Roy's last season.

23 players signed for next season

So by my count, we have a full squad - yet we are rumoured to be signing a defensive midfielder.

Either there is a contract classified as a scholarship (Noah James perhaps?) or someone is going to leave (Kanta retire?)

Jimmy Gardiner is tweeting that he still expects the midfielder to be announced this week, and like i suggested above a player could be put on a scholarship contract or Kanta becomes and injury waiver.

The other alternative is that a player departs.

Quite probably for Kanta. I'll reserve judgement to the end of the season, but Hoff could still have a role is my current thinking.

Not only that, but there is again the bulk of the squad that is only signed for the one season. If we over achieve, there is every chance the bones of the team could be picked apart immediately.

It's a double edged sword.

Possibly, but my interpretation of this is that he signed an upgraded deal to an A-league contract from a scholarship deal originally in the year he signed the extention.

He's only scored one goal in the last 8 years - and that was in the Thai 2nd division.
Add to that a ruptured ACL in 2016 and I hope we signed him to a minimum wage contract.
The kid from Melbourne Heart we saw in 2010 is a distant memory and several classes above the player he is now.

My thoughts are that if we had been offered this squad last year, we would have jumped at the chance. I'm willing to give Papas the benefit of the doubt that he is trying to assemble a champion team as opposed to a team of champions. Expressing doubt is fine, but some of the narrow minded negativity on here is amazing.

For what we were a year ago I am very happy. You couldn't expect marquee signings just like that and nothing wrong with getting no names that the coach knows.

2 or 3 players won't work of course but the business done the last few months is very good. Look forward to the product.

Doesn't look like we were ever an option:

Is Kanta ever going to play again? Does anyone know anything about the longest injury ever

There was a Herald article a few weeks or two months back.

I get the sense no. The complications continue emerging.

He's 3 appearances away from 200- would be nice to at least make that.

It's the last year of his contract. I don't see him being re-signed

Was in the Herald at the start of the month

JANUARY 4 2022 - 7:30AM
Newcastle Jets veteran Ben Kantarovski still battling to return from injury
ROBERT DILLON

ALMOST 18 months after he last played a game, there is still no update on when luckless Newcastle Jets midfielder Ben Kantarovski will be available for selection.

Kantarovski, 29, has not played since a five-minute stint off the bench in Newcastle's 3-0 victory against Wellington Phoenix on August 13, 2020, in the last round of their 2020-21 campaign.

The former Young Socceroos skipper underwent complex surgery in April last year to repair a problematic nerve in his lower back and sat out an entire season.

Despite extensive rehabilitation and physiotherapy, he has missed the first five rounds of 2021-22 and it is unclear when, or if, he will be able to resume.

It is understood he has been unable to join his teammates in full training.

Jets coach Arthur Papas has taken a patient and cautious approach with the club's most-capped player and remains hopeful that he can make a comeback later this season.

"Ben has been working hard to return to full fitness, but unfortunately he has suffered a couple of setbacks in his rehab," Papas told the Newcastle Herald.

"However we are still committed to supporting him and hopefully he can rejoin training with the first team in the near future."

Kantarovski, who debuted in the A-League as a 16-year-old and has represented his home-town club in a record 196 games, is off contract at the end of this season.

The playmaker told the Newcastle Herald last year he was hoping to avoid surgery, which he described as "a very last resort".

"That's quite a drastic and risky surgery, so we want to stay away from that avenue, but if it does come down to it, we may have to look at that," he said in March.

A month later, he underwent surgery but it has not provided a quick fix.

Injuries have been a constant source of frustration throughout Kantarovski's career.

Regarded as one of Australia's brightest young prospects when he debuted in the A-League in 2008, he needed a full reconstruction of his right knee in 2010, and had further surgeries on the same knee in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

He told the Herald last March that "the love of football" kept him going.

"There's nothing better than coming day in, day out to play the best sport in the world ... I can't wait to be back out there." he said.

OK, spurious rumour mill stuff, what's the point of a rumour if you don't bandy it around etc...

Was mentioned tonight that there was a feeling that some players may be getting picked over others based on their agent. I can see six of the players we signed this season are with FootballHousePlus (https://www.transfermarkt.com/footballhouseplus/beraterfirma/berater/5990), but the particular player who apparently hasn't been picked this season isn't actually competing for any of those spots, so not really sure on this one (rumour was coming from one of his relatives apparently), you can probably guess who the player in question is so I'm not saying it, but has Papas been linked to the agent at any stage? As much as I respect the player in question I'm not sure whether I believe that would have much at all to do with him not getting a run (the inference was that at least the relative thought it is part of it)...

The club was telling all and sundry 6-8 weeks ago just how well the negotiations were going with his parent club to keep him around for next but since then things have gone eerily quite.

One can only imagine negotiations may have stalled or even more probable and backable, with just about every creative player the drive by's have putting in shocker's of a season Lederer has called dibbs and you can put your house on him turning out in the red n black next season.

You do realise that is how a lot of it works in this country??

The Manager of the Club tends to get a pile of players signed and lo and behold they all have the same agent

Also if you look lowered down you will note it lists that this company also represent Arthur Pappas so is it really a surprise that we have these players

Just be thankful we don't sign Gypo Matt Simon from that Agent

Sotirio??

That guy is a 1 in 15 player

Plays 2 games a year where he looks like a World Beater then plays like he is an uncoordinated **** that will miss sitters all day long for the other 20 odd games

Why not sign Yuel if you want that ??

I half agree with this, I think from a goal scoring/assists perspective they are both fairly equal, but I thought this season Sotirio generally played better football in between his good moments and has a few more tricks up his sleeve then Yuel.

That sums up way too many players in the A League and then you get commentators every week declaring just about every Australian born player as future national team material.
No wonder the game and our national team are in the state they are.

Sotirio is not and never has been an A League level player. Yuel is almost useless himself but is way ahead of him. Yuel is improving from a below average player to average this season and you can see the potential to be a half decent backup. Sotirio has simply never looked like a starter in his entire A League career and has no ability to do anything but chase long balls, he isn't even good enough for a bench spot and has shown nothing to say he could be improved into even a squad player. Sign him and I'll put good money on us getting another spoon.

FMD, one step forward and 45 steps back it seems.

Don't think I am saying we should keep Yuel.

My point is if we are in the market for shit level players like Sotirio we may as well keep Yuel as it 6 of one half a dozen of the other with these two

I think we should be aiming higher and looking to sign players of better talent than both these two to play in a wide attacking role

We got a club full of squaddies now

Beka Penha Thurgate aside the rest of our side would not be wanted at any club in the top 6 if the squad was all put up for sale

The rest of them be lucky to get a contract at NPL level let alone a A League club

Finding shit players we are good at

No signing squaddies

We need to focus all our attention on a spine, which we sort of did already this year but stuffed up.

GK, CBs, 2 CMs (one offensive and one controlling) and an attacker. That's 5 first team quality players required to build off. Everything else can be managed easier once that core is sorted.

The 2 "proven" CBs we signed unfortunately flopped, hard. Sort that out, get a quality CM to partner Thurgate and we are probably in the finals next season, unless of course we sign Sotirio.

I've been happy from what I've seen from Weier so far to be honest, and I have been OK with Elsey all season.

Jurman needs replacing ASAP though.

Warland's cameos in the last month have been decent, but I haven't seen enough to warrant a first team place yet.

I think looking at 3 CMs, Wilson/O'Doherty, Thurgate, Penha is pretty solid for me. If we can find an international level 6 (presumably what Arques was supposed to be), and replace Penha if he goes (big ask), I think midfield is OK.

We could do with a starting winger or even two, Boumal showed glimpses and I'd be ok with him going round again, but I'm not fully convinced yet. Siatravanis was decent but nothing special, showed some product in the last month but that's about it. Yuel is a decent X-factor off the bench but not a starter for me. Mauragis not up to starting level yet imo. If he works on his defending he could be a good option for fullback, but too vulnerable there yet. Grozos/Ingham/Hoffman are not wingers.

Fullbacks are an issue for us, especially with the way we play, we need better ball playing fullbacks than we have had. Whether 433 or 352, they see too much ball and have too big a role in modern football to just have engines.

It's amazing how in any team sport where there is structure involved, the importance of having a good spine. A good spine helps balance out so much of the squad.
