I thought the reference was to where they played more so than their nationality. WSW have signed a bloke with La Liga experience who has played against some of the top teams in the world and scored in the last 12 months or so against them. Admittedly he's not banging in goals like Messi - but if he's fit the blokes going to own this league.

Mario Jardel won the European Golden Boot - twice. Only winners since him are park players - Henry, Forlan, Makaay, Toni, Totti, Ronaldo, Messi and Suarez.

The guy might be good, he might not. Why's he coming to Australia at only 31 if he can still compete in La Liga? His goal scoring record over the last 3-4 years is terrible. He could be the next Castro, he could also be the next Piovaccari. If he signed for the Jets, I could guarantee MFKS would be protesting because we're signing some overpaid hack to have a holiday. But because he signs elsewhere, we automatically expect him to be a superstar and criticise our own for no other reason.

My frustration comes with this 'grass is always greener' outlook that a few on here have no matter what. Other clubs sign different coaches/players and we automatically rubbish our own and want what the other teams have got. Adelaide and Wellington's coaches are automatically better than Merrick because they're foreign and have been around some decent leagues - I could probably name 20+ managers that once managed in the EPL, only to be proven as absolute duds. Let's ignore that Merrick has actually achieved something in Australia.

Now this Spaniard is automatically better than whoever Merrick is looking for, despite none of us having a clue who he's actually looking at, or going to sign. All of a sudden Spain is a better option than a Brazilian, just because of Castro.

WSW signed a guy who had recent experience against La Liga sides and more goals in the last year against them than Riera did. He was a huge marquee flop.

Riera has also only had TWO seasons in his his glamorous career where he has broken double figures and one of them was in the 2nd div. Take those two double figure years out and he has 50 career goals in 250 appearances. We'd be slating our management if we signed this bloke on $1m a year or whatever it's taken to get him to sign here.

Berisha was playing intermittently and awfully in 2.Bundesliga, Fornaroli was playing Uruguayan Primera and had hugely unsuccessful spells in Italy, Spain, Argentina and Brazil. Going back to before those two, Van Dijk was playing in Dutch 2nd Div scoring once every four games, half as efficient as the goal every other game he had over four seasons in Australia.

I don't think where they play is relevant.

Def my fav part of the off season.
Blokes on here going "he'll boss this league" are currently at a zero win %.

The only blokes that have ever 'bossed this League' are ones that no one ever heard of.

Even when we get a half decent one everyone wants him gone because his goals weren't proper enough or didn't have enough assists.

Face it, you sockah fans have no real idea what you're talking about, and I love it.
Makes the foz way more entertaining.

    Ok carry on.

Example to debunk your theory - we all said David Gallop would boss this league.

What about that Italian bloke that played for Sydney FC a few seasons back? He did ok.

But Mario had been injured and not done anything for years when we got him. This lad for WSW is fit and has been playing good football recently.

Yet blokes here are fapping about signing a bloke who played 180 or so times for less than 40 career goals in the best part of 10 years for club and NT

Let's not even get into taking out his only season of note where he scored 13 ****ing those figures up more

This the same bloke who has been unable to settle anywhere Greece Korea Japan Australia NZ for any period of time before ****ing off to a new club ala Devon Head

Yet no we should look to sign Burns but ignore blokes who played in LaLiga last season ??

Noting that I'm not and never have been one of those 'fapping' over Burns, he at least won A-league player of the year not that long ago. Is anyone here saying he should be getting paid what Riera is on? Not to mention his Oz status which is somewhat favourable in a league with a restricted number of foreigners allowed. He'd be a useful addition to our squad, keeping a marquee spot open.

I think you've missed the point. You've instantly had a go at the club because WSW signed Riera and we're going to sign some 4th rate guy, because you know the inner workings of Merrick and his Sth American contacts.

Personally I think we've had one of the better off-seasons so far of any club in the league. That could change over the coming month but so far we don't have a lot to complain about, unless of course you're MFKS.

Wait till our as yet unsigned South American marquee player loses his leg following a bad latte on the beach incident and Merrick is sacked for forcing haggis, blood sausage and deep fried mars bars on players as part of pre-season training.

You've spoken too soon and jinxed it all.

I didn't say it will translate to a finals appearance. I just don't think we've got much to complain about considering we potentially have two more influential signings still to come.

Since when has anyone had to back anything up with evidence on the foz ?

But if you look at the guys recent record he's been playing in a much stronger comp than the a-league and he's scored goals.

Jardel had done nothing for years, had a well known drug and injury problem, and was known to be a lost cause on the pitch.
