LUCKLESS midfielder Mitch Cooper will make a much-anticipated return off the bench when the Jets take on Perth Glory in the National Youth League in the west on Sunday.

Cooper is slated to play the final 30 minutes in his comeback from a second knee reconstruction.

The 20-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee when caught in a challenge against Western Sydney Wanderers in youth league in January.

That match was his second NYL start and fifth appearance after reconstructive surgery on his right knee.

‘‘It has been a long road back for Mitch, and his presence will lift everyone,’’ Jets youth coach James Pascoe said. ‘‘Despite his issues, he has always had positive attitude.

‘‘We will use him as a six and ease him back with 30 minutes.’’

The Jets will square off against former teammate Mitch Oxborrow, who was released in August to return home for personal reasons.

Oxborrow is one of a host of A-League players Pascoe expects to face.

‘‘Last week they used Ox, Jack Clisby, Danny De Silva and Chris Harold, and I am anticipating a similar turnout,’’ Pascoe said.

‘‘I watched their game against Victory and Ox is key to getting them going when they play out from the back.

‘‘We have to make sure that every touch he has is under pressure and keep him off that wand of a left foot.’’

The match is the Jets’ second after the bye in round two. They opened with a 3-3 draw with Melbourne Victory after leading 3-1 at half-time.
Hopefully this bloke stays injury free.

We may actually have a decent player on our hands if given the grace from the gods to be injury free

I suppose I take the view that in a tight league when we need to be at 100% to perform with any chance of getting something from a game having even a 2% impact on your performance can cost us a match.

Complete Bullshit that the time difference issue is that big of a factor.

As they are only there for 2 days they can easily stay on Newy time and go to bed at 7-8pm local time each night.

The travel is an issue due to the time factor involved but these blokes fly to games 8-10 times a season anyway so they should be accustomed to spending time at airports and on planes by now.
Issue here is mentality and these blokes are too soft and offer up excuses far too readily.

Just look at the way they are always mentioning how long a flight it is and how much travel they are doing etc. Instead of accepting and embracing the challenge put before them with 4 games on the road they are accepting poor results before hand as the travel is an excuse.

The 4 games on the road were a great opportunity. Knuckle down and accept the challenge and pick up some wins on the road to set them up for a glut of home games

Geez its a domestic flight check in is 1/2hour before the flight, they would be flying as a corporate group so they would have priority boarding. They get to the hotel a Jets employee would check them in, all they have to do is take the keys and find their room.
If it takes you 10hrs from your place of residence in Newcastle to a Motel in Perth, I would hate to see you going from Newcastle-Sydney-London etc.
A reminder to me to never travel with you or we would all miss the flight. Arrive a half an hour before flight at Sydney domestic blah ha ha. 9-10 hours was being generous in reality would be closer to 11 hours if we are talking from leaving home then meeting at a central location to get on a bus. Priority or not you still have to physically get to check in and check in 20 people not a five minute exercise then security, queues, getting to departure area etc and the other end waiting for luggage and so on it is not Newcastle airport.

The greatest indicator of how bad our season has started is surely the fact that we are arguing about travel arrangements to Perth.

Let's be fair, the side playing in the NPL were preparing for the trip to Weston with the pre-loaded excuse that the travel was an issue.

    We are ****ed.

Shiiizz MFKS. Travel time is a big issue. People travel 6-9 hours for a holiday. Still they bounce out like little kids and get on it... Griff etc perform like pros. Need more real fighters.
    We have been saved.

Majority of the squad hasn't. If that's the new S.O.P. for the club, we'll be looking for a whole new squad.

IRISH import Jonny Steele faces an uncertain future with the Newcastle Jets after being granted indefinite personal leave for reasons the club has refused to divulge.

Steele, the former New York Red Bulls midfielder, did not attend training on Wednesday, a development that caught club management by surprise.

After speaking to the 28-year-old, Jets coach Phil Stubbins told the Newcastle Herald that the club had agreed to grant him time off.

‘‘The player has requested a little bit of leave of absence, and after speaking with the player, and considering our duty of care as a club, we’ve decided that it’s a warranted request,’’ Stubbins said.

‘‘It will remain in confidence between the player and the club where it’s at. That’s probably all I’d be prepared to say at this point in time.’’

Stubbins revealed Steele’s issue was ‘‘not a football matter’’. He could not confirm nor deny if the player intended to return home to Northern Ireland during his leave.

‘‘Out of respect for the player, I don’t really want to go into too much detail, to be honest,’’ Stubbins said.

‘‘We’ve not put a definite period on here. ‘‘Everyone is trying to do the right thing here, and that’s where it’s at.’’

Steele’s absence at training was unexpected after he told a fan on Twitter he would be ‘‘back training this week’’ when he was asked on Tuesday if he had recovered from a calf-muscle injury.

Later on Tuesday he seemed in good spirits, tweeting: ‘‘This Melbourne Cup day is crazy in oz!’’

After joining Newcastle in the pre-season, Steele started in Newcastle’s first two games, against Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne City, and came close to scoring two goals against the Mariners.

But he was dropped for the round-three trip to Wellington when Stubbins was disappointed with his performance on the training pitch.

‘‘For me, training is everything,’’ Stubbins said at the time.

‘‘The application and intensity and everything we want at training needs to be apparent at any given time.

‘‘Maybe it is fatigue on Jonny’s part on this particular occasion, but he was just a little bit short at training.

‘‘We have the two big games coming up, a lot of travel involved, and we decided to rest him up.’’

Steele then suffered a corked calf and was ruled out of the trip to Perth last weekend, where the Jets lost for the third time this season.

The colourful Irishman’s absence on Wednesday was another frustrating setback for Stubbins, who had been hoping to have a full complement of players at his disposal for Saturday’s showdown with Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium.

Veteran left-sided central defender Adrian Madaschi and former Victory holding midfielder Billy Celeski are both back in training and pushing for selection.

Striker Joel Griffiths was rested from training on Wednesday but is expected to be fit for Saturday.

‘‘Jonny aside, it’s the first time I’ve had a full list to choose from,’’ Stubbins said.

‘‘Madaschi and Celeski are both very, very close, although I’m not sure if they’ll play this week.’’

Looks like it may well be bye bye Johnny

The link with Miller mentioned on here could be a good one. May also remove Carney from the left back spot too.

Nice to see Madaschi and Celeski back in training and pushing for the first team.

On another note, how'd Mitch Cooper go last week?

I personally can't see Carle playing for anyone but SFC or WSW - he loves living down in Sydney.
