I would like Nick Ansell, he fits your bill.
Baro is obviously a good player but i do agree that that foreign spot could be used better elsewhere on the park. There is enough quality Aussies out there that we could look at.
I would definitely take Nick Ansell. He is an upgrade on our Central Defenders (except Boogard, and he runs him close).
I also don't mind Baro, dependent on whether we can get decent Aussies in the attacking 3rd (ie/ marquee's).
So you saying we should sign Milligan?.....and can play CB if needed....
If we sign Milligan he go straight into DM
He be the best DM in the HAL
Why play blokes out of position??
He could do a job at CD if pushed
But you play your best players in their correct position

Milligan will be 32 this season and he's going to be looking for a marquee wage from any A-league club. Sorry, but his best football is behind him and I don't think the club can afford to be chipping into his pension fund.

He would be the best DM in the league by a far margin. I don't care if he is 32, he would be our best player easily.

FBK signs with Roar.
Love your work Lawrie.
Feeling the blowtorch so leaks a list of BS targets to mates in local press. Fans lap it up and completely forget what a basketcase of a club we are. The art of distraction.
Still got the best 2nd keeper warming the bench though #wegotthis

It's true.... and what a squad he will have to work with
Nathan Burns, Mark Milligan, Alan Baro, Mitch Nichols and Marcelo Carrusca. Going to be the Jets Invincibles. Golden years are almost upon us.
I must admit though, with Butters brush with the law we may actually be able to snare him as our marquee #10.
If only all the other players could be caught in their own coke scandals we would be in the box seat

My point is, Lawrie is either incapable of signing players or talks up our chances of signing players to avoid scrutiny of his job
http://www.theherald.com.au/story/4548659/jets-playing-for-keeps/
McKinna said talks were continuing with former Socceroo Michael Thwaite, who has been without a club since released by Chinese Super League outfit Liaoning Whowin in February.
“He is definitely of interest,” McKinna said.
“He is experienced, can play as a holding midfielder or centreback and is a good character.”
Apart from Thwaite the Jets have tabled an offer with Roy O’Donovan and spoken to Fahid Ben Khalfallah.
“It shows the the calibre of player we are trying to bring to the club,” McKinna said.
It's a pretty good tactic for Lawrie, avoid the hard questions like "why you employed the previous basket case of a manager" to then conduct a worldwide search and come up with Ernie Merrick.

Because of Fairfax cuts last year Jimmy has to report on NRL, and we know how much the Dill luvs his league. That said expect a pro Arsenal rant from him later this week.
Also - there ain't much happening, so they rely on their little "shock jock", Michael Parris to drop little bombs like Lee losing millions.
But Pariss is odds on to turn on the club one day
His son using the EJ and he probably won't make it further
Be interesting what happens if he been writing pro Jets stories and then has a gripe with people at the club

The real impact of the cuts to Fairfax Reporting in Newcastle is lack of objectivity imo.
Gardiner and co don't have time to be chasing scoops and rely on the tips and leaks from the Jets and Knights. Gardiner can't afford to be getting Lawrie offside so the use each other. Blurs the lines between reporting and marketing material from the club.
For example, I never saw one story that questioned Lawrie's decision to appoint Jones. Whichever way you want to look at it it was a disastrous decision so where was the scrutiny.

Generally speaking what journo goes on and questions the appointment of a manager??
They tend to give the new man a bit of lee way straight away
The other thing here is that JG and RD aren't exactly the greatest thinkers on the game
That where good football journalism comes when the reporter can actually write an article on their opinion
Problem is in Australia they few and far between
Ok what do People know about Kosta Petratos and Mario Shabow. Are they a chance of being good signings??
I be backing no on both
They are not getting runs at their current clubs
What makes you think they be world beaters coming here??
You have to ask why their current managers let them go??
They young they ain't playing
So why we sign them for??
Least with Our Caravan Georgevski etc we signing blokes who can play at other clubs bar ours
These two are failure until they prove otherwise
We already have enough failures in Clut Jackson Nabbout etc
Blokes who done **** all elsewhere trying to hold onto a professional playing career and we one of the only dumb enough clubs on the planet to pay them

Nah I meant how did Lawrie escape scrutiny once Jones was sacked. Whether the appointment was right or wrong, clearly the owner disagreed. But Lawrie just skates on by. Way too chummy with JG and RD imo

I don't really think it's been a problem for the sports section, or for the Herald overall really. They continue to produce some top class journalism.
For sport, and football in particular, they have at least three journos to cover one club during the A-League season. They definitely still have time to chase scoops. It's not as if they're not fairly neutral at times either, it's not their job to lay the boot in to a person, performance etc. unless it's a column.
I do think there needs to be more analysis and opinion pieces. Lowey seems like a good bloke but doesn't really offer anything insightful. Dillon probably doesn't do it enough in his column either - not sure why.

Ask yourself this, when was the last time you read a critical article. Then remember we finished stone motherless last season. Yet no questions asked.
End of the Tinkler era was the last time the Herald wrote anything but puff pieces

I agree there needs to be more analysis and criticism where warranted. I do wonder sometimes if that boycott during Tinkler's era has made them wary of biting the hand that feeds.

TBH i am not really being critical of the journos but Fairfax. It's a sign of the times were they would rather just produce quick content over actual investigative journalism.

I think it is fair to call both of them Jones signings.
I do think there needs to be more analysis and opinion pieces. Lowey seems like a good bloke but doesn't really offer anything insightful. Dillon probably doesn't do it enough in his column either - not sure why.
Lowey's articles were a struggle to get thru this year. In his live q&a blog things on the herald site he showed snippets of his former good self but filtered himself way too much, again. Best eg I have of this is when asked about Lawrie's comment about "Jones' job has never once been under the microscope" Lowey said there wasn't a chance that he would have worded it that way if he was Lawrie. But rather than stick the boot in he just kind of let it be, which I don't believe former Lowey (ie before he got hired by the club.. and before he had his mates club indented there) would have done.
And where was the journos absolutely lampooning the "just another game" comment from Jones?
People can blame "keyboard warriors" for a lot of things but at least there is SOME criticism, sometimes warranted, coming at the club.
I think whomever said it was right - the herald guys are scared of the tinkler backlash thing to happen. They seemingly prefer to toe the line and stay within the inner sanctum.
Cardboard cutouts everywhere, man. Big Brother is watching, innit.
Yall should listen to the Jerkstream - rarely anything positive gets said about the club :rof:

That also being said WLG Lowey and Jones go way back and have known and played with and against one another for many years
I think your really in delusion if you think he going to write anything that might cause friction between them
Remember Lowey isn't exactly a hard hitting journo and gets a few bucks writing something each week
I don't understand why people think those in the system or on the periphery of it are happy to shake the shit out of it by stepping on someone's toes

Agreed.
And imo Chinese Marquee is a massive mistake. Our marquee is going to need to be a genius to make this squad competitive and signing a player from a country we know to be overpriced is likely to end up with an overpriced dud.
This club continually takes the easy option because we have no ability to sign Visa players from outside the HAL

It would be a complete lottery to sign a Chinese marquee of the type that we could attract.
Troisi is 28, a Socceroo and could realistically be tempted to stay in Australia for the rest of his career with the right deal. Offer a 2 year marquee deal now while Victory are sitting on their hands debating what they want to do

Too many people give too much credit to leagues in Europe. Obviously the big ones are hugely superior to us but The A-League is a good standard of football and people still just assume it isn't as good as any league in Europe.

We should be targetting Dimi and Kosta. Sign those two and we're far better off than we were before.
Maybe even a shot at making 7th.

But the coin isn't really there
You take out your big 5 leagues, getting a run at a Ajax Celtic insert huge club and most of those blokes in Europe in the Dutch and Belgium and Scandanavian leagues are not on that much more coin than they are here
The blokes here are ridiculous overpaid for what they are really worth
Issue is in Europe there a bit more intensity and it treated as a legit comp not a joke as it is in this country
It is also "easier" to go from a lessor league in Europe to a better league in Europe, than it is to go to a better league In Europe from the A League.

Surely, given we had him signed before Ulsan, that he would return to the jets? its a strange termination.

Troisi wants 7 figures at Victory and has knocked back 2 marquee offers. Barborouses was on 750k marquee deal at the Nix. Given Lawrie's comments to the Herald over the weekend that we won't be signing a marquee you can assume neither will be in Newcastle.
I wouldn't mind betting both Petratos and Barborouses end up at Victory

If you listen carefully again to what he said to you, he wavered a little. Can't remember his exact words but was something like "a marquee player or the like". Then he mentioned that we could have had a "marquee" in January by shifting Kokko or Boogs. Its a deliberate dampening of expectations and I would bet the only marque we would end up with, if at all, is shifting Boogs or Kokko.
But truly, it doesn't really matter. We have a player budget ceiling and whichever way we slice and dice the squad with marquee's or cap allowances, we will spend within that ceiling. All a marquee would mean is 1 highly paid player with less to spend on the rest.

I'd put this in the Daily thread, but probably should have just commented here...
All the talk about Barbarouses is that he'll be returning to Victory, but surely Roar, Gypos and us would all be in talks to sign him.
Especially since Ernie was a big part of him returning to the Nix in 2016, and Kosta only seemed to start having "non-football issues" once Ernie resigned.

Signing Petratos certainly changes our recruitment for the remaining squad places. You would think the last 2 Visa places go to the LW position an either CB or DM. Considering the lack of Australian talent available grabbing Petratos now is a win.
If Kokko is released then will be interesting to see if the replacement striker is a visa player also and what we are willing to spend considering Kokko's salary. Andrija Kaluderovic, who scored 5 goals in 10 at the Roar under Mulvey, is apparently looking for offers in Australia. Was top scorer in Lithuania last season and currently in Thailand. Could be worth a look

Much better decision if that was the case. Aussie marquee with no need for a visa spot. There were solid rumours flying around with Merrick's appointment that he would come too. Merrick also stated he builds a side from forwards to defence. A frontline of Nabbout/Caravan/Petratos/burns certainly looks decent. Another quality DM and CB and I'm almost getting a stiffy.

Although you would think the way Petratos seems to be pretty much a done deal that Tony Rallis reached out to us to see if the deal was still there before approaching his Korean club for a release.

I know the focus seems to be around the frontline presently but we desperately need a midfield anchor. 3 very decent players currently uncontracted are milligan (wishful i know but his name keeps coking up), paartalu and holland. Those last 2 obviously seem more attainable. All 3 are capable of holding down the mids and very good at distribution. One of these paired next to ugar or brown, who i believe should be competing for the one spot rather than teamed up, and suddenly we are looking more solid than we have in years, atleast on paper.

Read this morning Milligan is out of contract in July. Which I'm guessing means no announcement would be made until then about where he will head. Another to throw in there is Spiranovic. Club is relegated from the CSL but has injury concerns.

100% agree.
If we sign one of these 3 and a decent CB I would be infinitely more confident of competing with teams this year. Our spine is still the weakest part of our team, and we do probably have the weakest in the HAL.
That said, we could also really use a half-decent attacker to get the plastics excited. Very doom and gloom at the moment which, although fine for us loyal shit-slingers, isn't great for getting mums and dads wasting their hard-earned at the club to subsidise the price of beer and jets-shaped hats and what not?

What's the go with Sainsbury? Loaned to Inter because they had too many imports at his CSL team. Played like 20 mins of football in the last game.
Imagine someone bringing both he and Spiranovic back to the HAL.... Sainsbury on marquee wages, Spiranovic on heavy wages of course.

I have a feeling this weeks 'exciting' signing will be one of those attackers to get the plastics excited. No doubt we need to score more goals but our goals against was once again atrocious mainly due to a weak porous midfield.

Milligan didn't basically confirm it, 4 weeks ago he flat out said he wanted to stay in the gulf and had no intention of returning. There are other clubs still looking for their Asian quota player, a
Al Wanda being one that was rumoured. So the chances he doesn't have any offers anywhere, then decides to return and chooses the Jets....it's just not going to happen.
Paartalu is a fraud and I would rather we played Kanta there than that wage thief. He has been living off his Brisbane reputation for years collecting massive pay cheques. People forget how dire he was for MC the last time he was in Australia.

Didn't say Milligan would come here. Even if he did return to Aus it would be with Victory. All I said was world game article stated he is off contract in July. No one will know where he heads until then. I believe realistically we will get Burns and Petratos. Make do with Brown and Uga in mids with thin coverage in Kanta. Have a backline of Geroge/Hoff/Jackson/Boogs with thin coverage in Cowburn/Vujica. With that squad I believe we could be mid table.

I don't mind the idea of keeping a Visa spot free. Worked well for SFC last year when they suddenly needed a CB mid season.

Mind you, this is the Guest visa spot that Essien & Diamanti didn't qualify for. Convincing the FFA of the calibre of player a club wants to sign to this rule is a lot of work. And judging off the things I've seen Victory & SFC CEOs do, compared to ours, I don't hold much faith in ours tbh.

Guests are highly restrictive to get approved so it's not a reliable option. A spare Visa spot would allow us to recruit a foreign injury replacement for an Australian player if we ever needed it.
Say if Nabbout, Boogs or Ugarkovic were long term injured, finding equivalent Australian replacements is almost impossible mid season.

I didn't watch the TV interview so you probably know more than me on this... however what i read in the paper made it sound like he was building up the notion of spending outside the cap on a marquee but actually just moving half of Kanta's wages and 25% of Cowburns using loyalty allowances. Happy to be wrong on this tho, just tempering myself with this muppet in charge still.
Would love to see us sign Burns tho. Dimi is better than Hoole so that's a good move I guess as well. Chinese Ronaldo could be anyone or any position or any quality, no idea. Which means we should sign probably 1 more midfielder no matter what. Doesn't even have to be a visa player, just 1 more mid better than Kanta would be a start.
Also, just realised we released Mullen so we are very light at CB now as well. Jeez. I kind of hope the Chinese Ronaldo is actually a Chinese Chiellini...

Agree, I thought so too and I have been the biggest pessimist about signing players. I was pretty certain we wouldn't sign anyone.
But it's seemingly all changed. Maybe the grant is a higher than what we were expecting or Burns has jumped at our low ball offer.

Ha you could be right. I have watched it several times now and you can take what he says different ways.
[edit]The only reason I doubt that is brfore Petratos came available again, the numbers were clear that we would sign 4 more players. So to me, he is included in the 3 or 4. But we should know soon enough

I thought so too but forgot about Jonny K. Suppose between him and to a leaser extent Kanta we have "ok" coverage at DM and CB. Still light on when compared to bigger clubs though.

Yep Essien is bigger then Cahil but just not in Australia so thats most likely what FFA looked at or it was simply just a loophole for Cahil

GK - Duncan
RB - Hoffman
CB - Boogs
CB - Jackson
LB - Georgievski
RM - D. Petratos
CM - Ugar
CM - Brown
LM - Nabbout
ST - Roy
ST - Kokko
And the bench
Moss - GK
Cowburn - DEF
Vujica - DEF
Alessi - DEF
Johnny K - MID
Kanta - MID
Club - MID
Shabow - MID
K. Petratos - FWD
We definitely need to improve the spine, 3 spots left, and if one is a Marquee there should be plenty left under the cap for 2 starting caliber players.

Yaya Sanogo doesn't currently have a club. He wasn't up to it for a top tier EPL team but he'd probably kill any A-League defence.

Purely speculation but if it is Milligan like some seem to have predicted (I'll only believe it when I see it), it has been mentioned on the Socceroos broadcast tonight that his grandfather past away this week. Could be a reason for a delay if that's the case.

The most insulting part of this signing is that he actually a minor upgrade on who we have... That just shows you how bad Boogs really is nowadays.
I'm very worried about how much coin he is on. We already have an 'old head' style defender who is getting overpaid to teach the younger guys how they think defending should be done. We probably needed another defender, but surely something different to what we already have on the books.

All we needed was another CB to compete with Jackson and Koutroumbis. That would give us depth and competition to bring out the best in them. Even an experienced NPL level would have sufficed. Not Iain Fyfe but younger.

Just picturing the long balls NTS and Boogs are going to be spraying to Nabbout and O'Donnovan every week.

I love it how people who pay little to no attention when details are reported then cast derision on anyone that does.
I never said I knew exactly what he earned, I said he was now in our top paid players.
If you pay attention to when players incomes are reported in the press and the subsequent moves they make to obscenely high paying leagues, it is fairly reasonable to estimate he is a top earner.

Again. Show me AUSTRALIAN CB's we should be signing instead.
We have no Visa spots available as they're already ear marked for other positions.
Everyone would go nuts if we signed a foreign CB on good coin instead of a marquee striker.
Nick Ansell, Matt Spiranovic, Try Curtis Good on Loan for a year. There's 3 straight off the top of my head

This is all about competition for starting spots, we've now got two guys competing for the "cant catch anyone" slow CB position, and two guys competing for the inexperienced bean pole CB position. It's actual a coaching master stroke by Bernie!

Sure, good options.
Especially Ansell.
However, no current Socceroo would come here.
Ansell is probably looking for an Asia/Euro deal after finishing up with Victory.
It's one thing to say they're available as options, but REALISTIC options, they are not.
They wouldn't take the same coin as NTS, and we can't offer more, in our current situation.
If Boogs was gone, it'd be another story, and we could throw more at them.

Seriously, with the players we have recruited, it's very likely to be the tactics we employ.
No one said turn and chase... but from standing start he has (had?) surprisingly quick movement over the first short burst. Wouldn't want him chasing back after getting beat on the counter from halfway though.
I think you got this bloke confused as your back to front
He actually had decent top speed
Once he got going he was quick enough
What let him down is his initial acceleration
Over 5-15 metres he just too slow to get through the gears

It's not like NTS ever contributed to a consistently successful A-league club, or had a hand in winning an ACL title. I see him as a solid upgrade over Mullen which isn't a bad thing. For those speculating over $$, we don't know what he's been offered, or whether he was just desperate to come home. How much was he on at his former club?

Petrol dollars was mentioned above, so about $1.30 a litre.
