I interpreted Ernie's comments not so much as our squad being too imbalanced with youth, but that we had too many young players whom wouldn't challenge the senior guys for positions.
If we swap Alessi for Adelson, IMO it signals that Alessi was never going to push for a position whereas Adelson has more chance.
It would be Hoff v Adelson. From what people have said from the trials Adelson has been impressive.

Adelson was with Jets Youth a couple of years ago after being let go by WSW but could not get game time behind Papas so moved on mid season to the Mariners. Did ACL at end of season 15/16 then again beginning of 16/17. Has not played many games in a couple of years. Very big risk IMO.

Adelson has been signed for two season.
would've liked us to move Alessi on first considering he is a straight replacement in being the back-up right back
I also wonder, with the signing of this new bloke and having Vujica as an actual left back if that means Cowburn will potentially get game time this season in his actual position which to the best of my knowledge is in the midfield

We now have 6 fullbacks on our books. 6. 26% of our available squad spots on 2 positions.

who's the 6th one? hoff, georgevski, adelson, vujica and alessi are the only dedicated fullbacks i believe we have

Cowburn
He's made 1 first team.appearance in midfield as a sub. The rest he's been left or right fullback

So you're saying we shouldn't leak too many goals this season. Please refer to my avatar when considering my comments.:rof

In the youth team was he not a midfielder though? I know we've used him in those two positions pretty much exclusively, but he isn't a left back and he's only a serviceable right back.
Depending on how Ernie see's it, we may only have 4 fullbacks come start of the season if he doesn't put Cowburn into those positions and we move on Alessi
Also, don't think anyone talked about him, but did that Pat Langois bloke play alright in the two pre-season games he played?

Hopefully cowburn does not get game time in his preferred position. If he does it means we are struggling big time.
A decent player but for me a reserve bench player at best

I don't necessarily think he should be on the bench either, but if through injuries and what not the season gets to a point where he is taking up a bench space, I would rather it be for him to come on in the mids then at right back or especially left back

Cowburn couldn't even hold down a midfield spot in a midtable Jets Youth team

Yeah that is the weakest fan boy attitude I have seen
Reason shit players like Jackson Clut and Cowburn are playing for the Junior level NT is the standards are so shit
Blokes at their age can't even hold down a first team spit at this club are NT level players by necessity as the candidates ain't there
Based on your wank logic Moss as he an international should start every game as he a NT player and Duncan isn't??
Has nothing to do with performance or ability etc
Just select blokes based on whether they played for NT at Yoof level or up
Might work well on Football computer games but this the real world

And Jamie Carragher was a striker at youth level. Sorry, but he's played 46 of his 47 appearances at fullback. Even for the Olyroos (or whoever it was he went away with) he played fullback. He has to considered a fullback despite what he played in the youth (which I think you're correct in saying he was a midfielder).
You're right, Ernie might have other ideas for him - we will have to wait and see. I agree he was limited as a left back offensively because he kept cutting in.
As for Langlois - not seen any of the pre-seaosn games this year unfortunately but he's getting some time alongside NTS which can't be bad for his development. Hopefully one for the future because it would be good for the Emerging Jets and Youth team to start supplying more to teh first team.

Reason I would like to see him used differently is primarily because, as you said we have 6 fullbacks, even if Alessi is moved on that's still 5 which is one too many.

Hopefully for Nick, Ernie has the same approach/consideration as well, because otherwise he could end up being one of those young players he was referring to that need to move to get game time.

That well he isn't good enough to nail down a spot at a club as poorly performing as us and people think of him as a bits and pieces utility player

I went to both the Weston and the Magic games, and i was really impressed with Langlios at the back. Very comfortable at the back and under pressure, good ball distribution and cant really remember him making any mistakes. I think he's definately one we should hang on to

Not trying to put shit on the kid
But I want to be seeing him against some better opposition than some midweek pre season matches played at a shit tempo against NPL sides from Newy who onlyget the ball when the Jets cough it up
It ain't like he was put under any great pressure in theae games

He's currently playing against some of the best youth players on the planet - some of whom may be household names all over the world in the next few years.

I understand what your saying. But he's only young and was pretty bloody good in both games. Just saying that i think he has definate potential... and maybe we should hang onto him... thats just my opinion of course. If you get a chance, go and have a look at him for yourself and let me know what your thoughts are.
I think he flew over with the youth team so didnt play against the gypos but i agree and would like to see him tested against better opposition

I've now forgotten, but is the South American mean to be a marquee or just a foreigner? Initially I thought the marquee spot was going to the Chinese player but I doubt the bloke we got trialling with us and gonna get that
Melbourne Victory have announced the return of Mark Milligan on a one year marquee contract.
I for one am surprised he has come back to Australia, after basically confirming he would stay abroad.

Ban Halloran. Been banging on about him for months. Get Chris Harold to stop the bloke scoring against us. :rof:
According to James Gardiner we will have another spot in the squad within a month as a player is moved on. You'd assume that is Alessi.

It would seem that way. And as far as due diligence goes from the FFA it's like the only criteria they had for the Jets new owner is that he wouldn't create a club capable of challenging any of the Sydney or Melbourne teams for a finals berth.
I'd be more than happy to see the club folded because what's currently on offer is simply not worthy of our support.

Does Troisi have the same agent as Hoole? Cos the news two months ago was that he rejected a marquee position at Victory as not good enough and was off to get a seven figure wage in Europe.
http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/4706781/melbourne-victory-braced-for-james-troisi-exit-as-talks-stall-over-new-deal-for-socceroo-midfielder/?cs=3674
But as reports surfaced that he was looking for a near seven figure sum as a marquee player - which would put him on a bigger wage than current leading scorer and marquee man Besart Berisha - many amongst the club's fan base began to wonder whether he was worth it or whether such a sum, spent elsewhere, might bring greater value next year.
These are the sort of things that make you wonder what goes on behind closed doors with City, Smurfs, Victory and the FFA. It's like the FFA rushed Troisi on the Cahill rule and then killed it the next day - something stinks if he is within the cap.
Be fair to the Jets and others of their ilk - it isn't a fair playing field any more.
and then just dumped us onto the first person who they could
Incorrect - remember Stephen Thompson?

The FFA need to follow the lead of the MLS and start publishing player wages. Because until that happens the salary cap might as well not even exist.

The bloke didn't have the cash to fund us that why it never eventuated
The salary cap was a farce the day the FFA changed the rules to allow Olyroo Allowance just so the Smurfs could fit weak ankles and Disco Stu under the cap
It been progressively much worse each year going more and more to the Sydney Melbourne clubs at the expense of the rest
Quite frankly it actually benefits them more by keeping it as it gives them a significant leg up and keeps wages high for shit players at the other clubs
They would be more in favour of keeping it than anyone else

Mr Lee is paying the bills, so i can't really complain. This is exactly what i expected from whoever bought us at this stage, in 5 years time i'll make a decision on Mr Lee so until then if we have the choice between wooden spoons and not having a club to support then so be it. Zhu Zhengyu who trialled here is signed to a top three Chinese Super League team but has never actually played a proper match for them. He's been loaned out to a 2nd tier Serbian league team where he played three games, then loaned out again to a 2nd tier Chinese team.
My question here is why did they even trial the bloke ? At the very least we'd need a bloke who is killing it in the 2nd tier of Serbian or Chinese football, not someone who struggles to even get a game.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Jets being comprehensively flogged by their opposition this year. [And I'm not being sarcastic either]. This club needs to really bottom out hard so maybe someone will finally take notice and say things really need to change.
People will soon see that Mark Jones was not the problem - he was just a convenient excuse to mask the fact the club doesn't spend enough to be competitive.

Jones was the problem, and symptomatic of the larger problem of jobs for the boys and give a mate/local a go attitude even if they haven't done anything to show they are up to the task. Jones totally phucked the team from having a chance to get into the six, to handing Newcastle another spoon because he had no plan B and couldn't make a strategic sub if his life depended on it. I'm going to give Bert a chance because he isn't a local so will hopefully not put up with the mentality, but appointing someone as goalkeeping coach just because he lived near where Jones grew up isn't good enough, Bowling needs to show he's a hidden genius or get a real GK coach in, no more jobs for someone's nephew...

Agree with the bit about jobs for the boys giving a local a go mentality
I wish Bert all the best but I don't see him un farking us anytime soon
This is a 2-3 year job not a quick fix
We don't make the semis this year AGAIN and the lynch mob will be out calling for Bert's head
Look at what we done this off season
Yeah we bought a couple of OK players in to the club in Petratos and Georgevski and our Caravan
But so has every other club
Looking at others recruiting we still 8th -10th in the League
Jones was never the problem
Just as Bert won't be the problem this season

I think you are confusing jobs for the boys with getting the cheapest available person for the job.
Not spending enough coin is the issue - saying it's about Jobs for the boys is simply ridiculous unless Jones was getting paid top dollar for his appointment - which it's pretty obvious he wasn't - as they would not have been so eager to punt him at the end of the season.
Merrick got the nod here because he's out of favour as a coach and would have signed up for not a lot of coin. It was never about him being the best man for the job - His failure to get Wellington anywhere when they spent as much as Sydney and Melbourne - pretty much stamped him as not able to cut it anymore at this level. Nobody else wanted him, he was available cheap - Jets signed him. Game Over.

Mr Lee never said there was money available..... and once again they selling us a dream...... cynical? Yeah can't help it... don't trust the gypo CEO

Yep and as always about the time auto renewals take place or people have the opportunity to advise the club of opting out.

I also think with higher priced coaches comes higher priced demands. Things like coaches wanting to bring their own staff with them, demanding budget of a certain amount to get certain players, etc. There's lots of factors that would go into it. I think one of the big reasons Merrick was brought on was it seems like he has been happy to come in on his own and work with the existing setup for the most part.

Ive noticed with merrick in charge a lot less rumouring and definitely a less people 'in the know'. With previous managers, if we are signing someone today or in the next couple of days, james gardiner and/or ray gatt would have had his name on twitter by now. Merrick certainly a lot less transparent than previous managers, which i dont mind personally.

His non selection of Hoffman is just proof he sees that Hoffman is average and he needs better
So he is playing Georgevski at RB and giving Vujica the chance at Left Back to nail down a spot

Jets haven't announced anything....
The Newcastle Jets could have a new South American attacking midfielder on deck as early as this week but are being careful about getting their hopes up after missing out on an earlier target.
It is understood the deal is close to being sealed, but the club was in a similar position a month ago before the player pulled out due to a family health problem.
It is understood the new signing may not be a marquee player outside the A-League salary cap.
If he does arrive, the Jets will have one vacancy on their roster for a Chinese player, unless they can move on a player not in coach Ernie Merrick’s plans.
Sounds like someone getting a scrap of info and trying to make a story out of it.

The herald article says out of Patito and the others they are looking at they will chose the best fit for the team. Maybe Merrick reconsidered who would be the best fit.
The Patito story blew up because it was leaked in the Greek media and then everyone here got on it. Otherwise we would have been non the wiser.

Merrick might be getting frustrated having not had to deal with a salary cap or player budgets at is previous appointments.
RodrÃ*guez also missed 4 games with a Malleolar injury this year and had 68 days off in 2015 due to injury. Merrick might rightly see him as a risk.
If you look at his value as a player pre 2015 injury and post the injury Rodriguez is certainly a player in decline - even at a relatively young age.
Then you look at how small he is and he's going to struggle in a physical league unless he can compensate with agility / speed - which he appears to have lost. since 2015.

While doing some research on Pato I came across an article of Argentina's top 20 unfulfilled talents. One of the comments said it was missing Pato.

Until the contract is ****ing signed then it just all negotiation
Either side can pull out at any time
Usually it the player
This time it the club
Seems like the parasite is blowing up mainly because Bert has cost him a pay day and now he stuck trying to find Rodriguez a new deal elsewhere to get paid

I've heard he grew up playing the same game as Ozil did when he was young, wears boots with studs like Suarez does, had a zidane shirt when he was boy, and has had his hair cut with a pair of scissors like Messi once did.
I've heard rumors he's got even more tenuous links to a whole host of other great players for the media to milk way too much copy from.

I dont know if that classes as a long history of serious injuries. Yes the ACL and patella problems were more severe but they were back in 2012. Since then he has hurt his elbow for 2 weeks and a groin and abductor strain (common football injuries) so not sure that rules him out of dealing with the physical nature of the league. Doing your ACL also doesnt mean you cant play anymore - yes there are players who have never been the same since they did it but there are also a heap of players in all different sports who have returned after an ACL repair.

30 with a history of ACL issues isn't a great signing... Generally history shows that even those players that bounce back from an acl do it in their early to mid 20s... Once you're cracking 30, these things tend to rear their head again and take a lot longer to heal...
Hoping I'm wrong, but knowing the jets, he'll be done by round 3 and have a nice paid vacation...

Don't you just love how the announcement of this by the Jets is done with little fan fare
A competent club bring old mate KFC Ronaldo in and plonk him down at a press conference Monday morning and unveil him to the world as a surprise announcement and get the free publicity promotion of their game /club etc by having the media in covering it
But no our club have a Luke warm announcement on a Saturday morning via their websites

Absolutely, and I hope he stays healthy and he'll be a quality signing.
My concern is the jets history with ACL injuries... I don't know if it's how hard we work in training, our rehab or just poor damn luck, but we seem to always get screwed over with them.
My other concern is once you crack 30, niggling injuries tend to become reoccurring injuries with higher frequency and longer recovery... Most athletes are hitting their physical peak at 27 and by the time they are 30 it's a harder slog to stay healthy and stay at the top level (not saying it's not possible).
It's an opinion, and hopefully I'm proven wrong... It's not meant to be pessimistic, but just a realistic view of the overwhelming stats across many sports when it comes to ACL injuries.

One would argue that he came back too early (6-7 mths) from his ACL surgery and then he hit his patellofemoral problems a month later and was out for an extended period (12 months total). So if he had done the standard rehab protocol he would have still come back perfectly fine at the 12 month stage.
ACL injuries are a combination of various factors. To attribute it entirely to a jets specific thing is utter dross.
Many athletes have returned to their peak following ACL injuries.
Considering he has played many games since his ACL injury would tend to tell me that he is on the lower end of the risk scale.
Do we know how he did his ACL? Contact v non-contact?
The injuries he has picked up since appeared to be minor soft tissue injuries which are part and parcel of elite sportspeople.
