The problem with replacing Taggart, and to a lesser extent Birraz, is that we signed them as fringe squad players on fringe squad player salaries and turned them into socceroos. Will need to lower expectations when replacing them. I would guess that Harold is potentially Taggart's replacement

Harold is older and I don't think has the potential Taggart did. We had a kid with fantastic potential but we decided to not play him and let him leave

Flores is a great signing for the club. Before the season has even started Stubbins is proving beyond doubt just how useless GVE was when it came to assembling a team.

Harold is 1 year older than Taggz. My point was we won't be replacing Taggz with a gun striker.

Stick to your Diary thread mate lol

he wasnt unwanted by the gypos, those povo bastards couldnt afford to re-sign him. So we have swooped in and snared him. So long as we have solid advice this time on his injury status, and we have a plan in place if its not, am quite happy to welcome him to Newy.
Would have been interesting if we had picked up Ambrose instead, but with Flores we know we are getting a quality #10.
SO his Chinese club got rid Victree got rid Gypos didn't sign him.

Says a hell of a lot when clubs who are doing better than us don't want him.

Yet good old Newy sign everyone else trash

The bloke has been available for months. No other club wanted him.

Excellent signing. We've all been complaining for years that we needed a true AM. Flores, Carney, Griffo, Taggart (?), South American Striker. Compare to last year when we had Taggart who hadn't proven anything yet and an injured Heskey.

I'm more optimistic this season.

I can understand people being a bit tetchy RE: Flores. It wouldn't be the first time we've signed a player with a chequered injury history. But if the club has learnt from past mistakes, and Marcos is as good a chance of being fit as Neville (easiest comparison I could think of) then it could prove a masterful move.

One thing is certain, time will tell. Let's all just wait and see how it pans out before lambasting the poor bastard

Compare Harold to Heskey last season and I'd take Harold in a second. We got the value out of Heskey's appeal and sold enough merch and attracted the fans. Harold would cost substantially less and he actually nipped in and grabbed a couple of goals. Would be a good replacement for Taggart with Griff, Carney & Flores feeding him.

To be honest, I wasn't sure if he had any other injuries to speak of.

And MFKS is one example I guess, but I doubt he will be the only one with some concerns about fitness. At least with Neville the club had intimate knowledge of the prognosis and rehab.

if we keep taggart. We're gonna have to bench Carney or Griff
Or move Carney to left back to fit all of them in the team

Why bench them?

Brilliante
Grifo. Carney
Flores
Colombian. Taggs(other)

that would see us concede a truck load of goals because we'd be easily over-run and played through in midfield. Brillante also isn't a holding mid. Griffo would suffer as a wide mid with far more defensive responsibility and doesn't have the fitness to play their anyway

Where im at WM. Decent player but wait and see.

Alternatively, Ive seen quite a few handy players get back to a good level and become ineffective after this injury.

Another Q is why has he been moved on from so many clubs if he's pretty good?

2006–2008 Newell's Old Boys 16 (0)
2007–2008 → Unión de Santa Fe (loan) 26 (2)

I don't know about anything pre-Adelaide, but since he won the Johnny Warren medal down there, it's reasonable to start at that point.

Adelaide offered him a 3yr offer as marquee which he turned down and chose to go to China.

Not sure why he left China suddenly, but how many players in the A-league make it in Asia?

His form at Melbourne wasn't great and he didn't fit Ange's style, although he still managed 4 goals - when do we get 4 goals from a midfielder?

As for the scum, they didn't want to risk the injury. I've seen a lot of CCM fans already annoyed about this signing which goes to show that the form he produced at the start of the season for them was fairly good.

Wrt to Flores at victory, they were playing him as their sole striker. And he still showed quality. As long as we play him as a number then, we'll be fine.

My views on Flores: great signing.

Adelaide - his form spoke for itself. One of the best players in the league. A pure #10 who set up goals, scored them, and got chicks. Any team would have been crazy not to sign him if given the chance.

China - he failed there the same reason many players do. The lifestyle is shit, and it's hard to break into the scene. I imagine in terms of HAL players going to China that the percentage of players who actually do good things there is less than 25%. I've been told by several players who have played in China professionally that if you aren't playing for a Beijing-based club, you're more than likely going to have an awful time. I was not surprised his China thing didn't work out.

Victory - let us not forget this was during Ange's transition phase, and they were going to a whole new system with whole new philosophy. He was played as a false 9, which arguably hasn't worked for Victory then or since (nowadays they play with two false 9s, and it sucks). But there were glimpses of him being amazing there, even when out of his comfort zone.

CCM - I thought he was superb. He seeemed to get the best out of Mitch Duke, who majorly struggled after Flores got injured. Dictated play, got a few assists from memory, bagged a few goals (although IIRC most were penalties). It's a shame he got injured, as I was enjoying watching him play. I thought Griff was absolutely unreal at Sydney, and a large amount of it came down to him being smart enough to know where ADP wanted to play the ball. If we have Griff's smartness, coupled with the proven ability of Flores, I can see great things happening.

This guy is a bit of a character - loves a laugh, loves taking the piss, pretty active on social media. We've missed a good personality ever since Ljubo IMO, and having someone as light-hearted as Flores might be good for us.

As much as HSG have done some funny things over the years, they do attempt to get some things right. For years and years, our team was in desperate need of a target man striker. They signed Heskey (I still don't understand why GVE had his panties in a bunch over that signing - he was one of the main people saying he needed a target man). We've needed a number 10 ever since Nick Carle basically - HSG attempted to sign Culina, and have now signed Flores. It may take us some time - but the evident holes are getting plugged.

Stubbins seems to be great so far. He's making low-fuss, common-sense signings. Something that GVE seemed to refuse to do, ever.

My optimism at Stubbins has been laughed at by a few footballing tragics down here in Adelaide.

You'll find over time that he talks the talk but can't get his team to walk the walk for him Grim.
He really struggled with Campbelltown City here in SA last year, with a team that on paper should have been in contention to win the whole thing.

That's at a state league level, let alone National. Damien Mori will be the next big coach to come out of Adelaide. He's doing good things with City.

When he played against my team, he was berating his players and yelling and screaming most of the match.

I just cannot see his reasoning behind getting a new bunch of players to do entry level coaching badges..... do team building in a way that will engage and physically challenge young lads more. Sitting studying isn't the way to do it.

And in the same interview, he's heaping pressure on his young new lads to perform before a ball is even kicked. That's coaching error 101. Say it in private to them while protecting them from the public eye. He's basically called them all out already in public.

It wont be long before the yelling and screaming starts again....

I have no idea. I just meant as an option and in terms of squad depth, going with ONLY 3 centre backs into a 30 game season is a bit of a risk.

Herald also says last signing will be a midfielder. Am hoping it is Nathan Burns but if there isn't a lot in the cap would happily take Nick Ward back again.

I realise we have the FFA Cup this year, however if we do officially sign the Colombian Striker today thats 22 players signed and sealed before mid June. 3 and 1/2 months before kickoff for HAL. Some credit has to go to management for pulling this off rather than the usual days before the season starts then 6-8 weeks for visas to come through

ENNER VALENCIA - http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/enner-valencia/profil/spieler/139503

Both in Ecuadors world cup squad and young strikers - 2 more possibilities? Not sure we would have the cash for them though?

I see no reason for Stubbs to hype it up if it turns out too be some no name kid. I'm not expecting some huge name but if he has as much name value as someone like Berisha did prior to coming to Roar then I see no reason even announcing we were gonna sign someone from South America.

Can someone compile all the hints that have been dropped about this South American striker?

I've tried to have a look in Football Manager and there are a few Colombian striker that seems to fit.

I've looked at Colombian, >1 int cap, Striker, contract expired or expiring in 1 year (from July last year) and not based in Europe or UK.

If I exclude people >35, I've come up with three names...

Your probably right. Pretty well too late for one today. Bloke probably changed his mind and jets are madly trying to get another signing up for this week.
On a different trajectory, with stubbins saying we'll probably bring in another centre back, it will surely have to be a low wage signing. What about David vrankovic? Young guy that I reckon would of kept his contract with melb city had chapman not forced his way down there. Any other young, promising ones around?

I was wondering if this would happen. Two theories here, Caravella career nose dived at AUFC after being successful at the Gold Coast so wondering if he and Stubbins did not see eye to eye. Second theory is that Stubbins has stated we are after a midfielder/defender for the final squad position I wonder if Caravella's salary was required for this position. Might explain holding off on formalising the striker deal should Stubbins still be juggling the salary cap.

As it looks likely we will play 442 with a midfield diamond, I wonder in Jon Mackain is being looked at for the midfield/defender role. We will need a dedicated DM to which only Kanta fills the role.

Didn't Stubbins leave BEFORE Caravella arrived? Or at least in the same off-season...

I think it could just be that Caravella hasn't recovered as well as he had hoped from his ligament tear and is retiring to pursue life outside of football in his hometown of Cairns, kind of like it says in the article...

Agreed. Too many experts of aust football think the only way a HAL player can develop nowadays is to go to Eredivisie, Bulli 2, Belgium, etc.

Fulham have bugger all strikers. Meaning more opportunity for taggz.

Great move for him imo. I reckon he suits the english system to a tee.

Taggart never had a release claws, he had a $400,000Aud transfer celling. Which basically means if a club were interested the Jets management couldn't negotiate a transfer fee higher then $400,000. They didn't have to sell him for that amount but they couldn't negotiate for a higher fee.

Taggz is off to Fulham

The Newcastle Jets have agreed a transfer for Socceroos striker Adam Taggart to join English Championship Club Fulham FC.

Taggart leaves the Jets after two seasons in the Hunter, during which time he scored 18 goals in 44 appearances.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a stellar 2013/14 campaign for Newcastle, scoring 16 goals to win the Hyundai A-League’s Golden Boot Award while also being named the NAB Young Footballer of the Year.
Taggart, who is currently with the Australian team competing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, said he was excited by the new challenge ahead of him.

“I’d like to thank everyone at the Newcastle Jets, including the players, staff and fans for their fantastic support over the past couple of seasons,” Taggart said.

“I’ve had two really enjoyable years at the Jets and for that reason I will always hold the Club and City of Newcastle close to my heart.

“I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter in my career with Fulham and working hard to take my game to another level.”

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby wished Taggart well with his move to Europe.

“At the Newcastle Jets we take pride in our ability to develop young talent and give them a platform to showcase their ability in the A-League,” Middleby said.

“Adam has been a great servant of the Jets during his time at the Club and we’ll continue to follow his progress with great interest during this next stage of his career and beyond.

“This move is a fantastic opportunity for Adam to join a Club with a proud history in English football and we wish him all the best at Fulham.”

I agree. I think he is going to struggle physically and won't get game time before getting a loan move back here before heading to South Korea like do many A-League player who left too early before him like Djite, Burns, Brosque, Ruka, bulut etc

When you have tinks saying he wants nothing to do with football clubs, an approach from an OS club is always going to look good, for the player and tinks to cash in before cashing out. With this now confirmed I think the south american is the natural like for like replacement for taggz and most likely that was the plan all along, hopefully this means we'll have cap and squad space for a decent LB now.

I have doubts over whether he could replicate or better the season he just had in the HAL, as the HAL is such a weird comp, so IMO he needed to receive the rewards for his season before he did a Kanta and majorly dropped in form over the next 2-3 years he could have stayed here.

I can see your point. What you say about the league is true, too. I certainly won't disagree.

Getting him over for the training is definitely a plus. I said in the socceroos thread that you can see the difference in size of the likes of Jedinak. Taggz needs to bulk up and get better training (like training in how to use his left foot, but there are successful one footed players). He'll get that going overseas. I hope for his sake Fulham are the right club. They're a bit of a shambles at the moment

I'll be honest the fact that on paper he's scored 2 goals in 5 years, does not fill me with confidence. I was trying to be positive, so maybe he'll come good, hopefully.

And anyone got any guesses on the Spanish guy? I hear Ander Herrera is on his way out of Bilbao.....

Yeah, like Cahill. God forbid Taggart ever gets as one footed as that guy.

Also, go look at the goal package for Taggart this season gone... he scored a left peg strike in the game against Brisbane. He might just need more confidence in his left foot because that goal was pretty decent. And I was surprised when watching it back that he actually scored a few headers as well. And then I had a quick :fap: to the first one against Heart... no step, just trap and swing. Reminded me a bit of a Ronaldinho goal from years back.

Agree about shambles of a club. 3 managers in a season. Hope they don't end up going the route of Portsmouth for Taggart's sake.

Maybe it's confidence as you say Grim. That probably better describes what I am going for. I kept thinking last year that Taggz gives himself away because he favours his right foot so much, be that he gives away time trying to get around the ball or angles for the shot being reduced.

Golden boot in the A-League. I don't think overseas defenders and keepers will be as easily sold or beaten.

It's coming across as I'm knocking the bloke, but I really want him to succeed. Not just for himself but for the national team too. He has a great base from which he can continue to develop.

Yeah, just saw that. Disappointed that he's only here on loan. If he's good, Barcelona will want him back, so at best he'll only be here one season. That being said, if he's a flop (and hopefully he won't be), we won't have wasted too much $$$ on him.

And as for a striker, his strikerate isn't brilliant, unless Stubbs is going to play Griffo up front and Montano on the wing?

He has 5 goals in 30 games... that's not great by any standard but I would be more concerned that he has only played 30 games in 5 years, not the goals he has scored.

From what I can find, the Ecuadorian league is weird. They play "Primera" for the first half (Jan-Jul) of the year and "Segunda" for the second half (Jul-Dec), and seemingly play year round.

He seems to have played a fair amount of 2013 on loan for El Nacional, scoring 8 goals in 27 appearances. But it doesn't seem after coming back to Barcelona that he has played, so seemingly hasn't played since December.

I thought Griff may have been played centrally or off the bench.

However, the way Stubbins is talking, we aren't looking at a LB, so Carney or Goodwin at left back makes more sense. Unless of course Stubbins is going to retain Gallaway there.

I think we have enough "back up" players so I hope the players we are looking at are first team quality. The Nick Ward trialling doesn't fill me with great confidence.

Reports Brillante heading to Fiorentina. Another midfielder to replace!!

There are also rumours about Mikel Arteta leaving Arsenel for Fiorentina. Only problem is neither Arsenel, Arteta or his manager have spoken to anyone from Fiorentina.

So, not a lot of confidence here in anything about Fiorentina.

If Brilliante is moving on it might explain why there hasn't been any signing recently. Phil might want to sign a fullback with the loss of Brillante whereas previously he wasn't looking to fill a spot there. Noting the recent article that indicated Goodwin may play fullback this season would like to see Nick Ward signed as a RM or LM option.

Cannot imagine Brillante getting anywhere near the Fiorentina bench anytime soon. Good luck to the guy.

He's 21 - I don't imagine Fiorentina would invest in the guy if they don't have a development plan for him. Some intense training pre-season to see what he is capable of and then potentially a loan to a Serie B team or a full season in their reserves set up playing a handful of cup games.

So, the DT is carrying the story...

NEWCASTLE Jets are poised to lose a second big-name player to an overseas club with Socceroos squad member Josh Brillante set to link with Italian Serie A club Fiorentina.

The Jets are expected to announce Brillante’s move today after the two clubs agreed on a transfer fee for the versatile mid-fielder who was still under contract to the A-League club for another season.

It comes only a fortnight after the Jets’ Golden Boot-winning striker Adam Taggart was released from the final year of his contract to link with English club Fulham.

Say what?!? We released Taggart on a free?!

The Newcastle Jets have agreed terms for the transfer of midfielder Josh Brillante to join Italian Serie A Club ACF Fiorentina, subject to a medical.

Brillante will travel to Italy this weekend to finalise his move to the Europa League outfit.

Brillante departs Newcastle after two seasons with the Jets, having made 46 Hyundai A-League appearances.

The 21-year-old was named Newcastle Jets Player of the Year at the conclusion of the 2013/14 campaign, having excelled as both a central midfielder and right fullback.

Brillante’s performances for the Jets earned him a call-up to the Socceroos’ 30-man preliminary squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Brillante said he is excited to begin a new chapter in his football career.

“I’m very excited to be joining Fiorentina and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead,” Brillante said.

“I’ve had an amazing couple of years at the Jets and I’m very thankful that I came to a Club like Newcastle who develop young players and give them an opportunity.

“Having the chance to play regular first team football has helped my game improve a lot and it is a big reason why I’ve been able to achieve things like playing for the Australian national team.

“The Jets Members have been fantastic over the past couple of years and I’d just like to thank them for their support.

“Newcastle will always be a part of me now and I’ll be keeping an eye on the Jets and hoping the Club does well in the future.”

Jets CEO Robbie Middleby wished Brillante well with his move to Europe.

“As a Club we take great pride in in the way Josh has grown and developed as a footballer during his time at the Newcastle Jets,” Middleby said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Josh to join a Club which is competing in one of the toughest leagues in world football and will also playing be in the Europa League next season.

“On behalf of Members and everyone at the Club, I’d like to thank Josh for his services and wish him all the best with his move to Fiorentina.”

Released from contract kind of suggests that, doesn't it? Otherwise why use those terms (apart from being the telegraph) when it's simply a stock standard football transfer?

"The Jets announced on Tuesday night that they had agreed to a transfer fee for Taggart, who had a year to run on his contract in Newcastle."

Sort of indicates it wasn't free. I have a recollection of reading somewhere it was 6 figure but no idea where.

Wow we need to sign a couple of mids now with Josh going as well.

RE: Taggart

A statement on the club’s official website read: "Fulham Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Adam Taggart from Australia A-League side Newcastle Jets, for an undisclosed fee."

However, i thought i read somewhere it was $400,000

I felt Brill was always missing something, only occaisionally impressed me. probs mostly due to age. Cant argue with serie A but.

Not certain but I think the figure was £180,000 which is roughly $330,000.

Actually hold your horses.

There is no way in the world we are getting €1000000 for Brillante when Middleby and Palmer are involved.

I call bullshit.

We would be lucky to get a signed Batistuta shirt a salami stick and a bag of pasta
