If you read any of Stubbins comments on Jeronimo or watched him play at AUFC, he is only being signed as a 2nd striker. Jeronimo won't defend.
IMO we are nailed on to play 442 now.

Just saw the daily news thread. Come on make it happen jets!! We'd have an awesome team with him!!

Bk, Regz & Kanta would still be very much in contention, Kanta when fit and in form is a better player than Paartalu IMO and his only 22 so him and Birraz along Goody would be your young guns.

Are people serious ? His CSL Club Tianjin Teda released him mid contract and now he's playing in Thailand. FFS which part of this doesn't ring alarm bells ?
As far as the jets signing Paartalu I'd say there is a good chance. After all, he's currently out injured so that would certainly put him into contention for a Jets contract.

I'm sorry but when did BK lose his starting spot?
Best keeper we've got and was on fire when he came in late last year.
Or do we just forgive old flappy hands Biraz and chuck him back in there?

You're right. We should completely discard players that were immense in the A-league but went to Asia and couldn't make it. It's not like we've ever signed those sorts of players before.

That starting team would be mine too based on what has been said so far.
In saying that, Edson and Steele are very much unknown and could easily be flops.
Also i believe Kanta can force his way into the best 11 if he gets into some form and stays injury free.

Something I'm hoping we can see this year as well is goals from set pieces. Between Flores, Griffiths and Carney we have the delivery. We Madaschi, Jaliens, possibly Steele and with any luck Paartalu we have the aerial threat. With the nous to win a free kick high up the field, we have options
It's something we really haven't had since Topor-Stanley. Even then our delivery was suspect.
I've got to stop talking because I feel more and more positive about the team each time and I think I'll be gutted (again) if we fail to fire.

My best 11 is almost the same but I don't want to see either Joel or Jeronimo played out of position. I want to see Joel as true No 9 with the team based around him and Jeronimo playing off him. Both are out and out goal poachers and that is all they should be thinking about, and neither have the defensive qualities needed in 442 at RM.
Montana may turn out to be a weapon but if we are serious contenders we need 3 proven strikers and rotate based on form/injury/suspension. 5 man benches.

Must have really wanted to play against Malaga, probably agreed that he could before moving. At least he's getting some match fitness which is good for us I suppose. He has already scored in their pre-season.
If we do sign Paartalu, not sure whether his thai team will want to let him go before the end of the season. They're currently in 1st and its pretty close. Their last game is Nov2, a month into our season.

I didn't get the change to do this at the time, but here is a tribute to our departing captain - Ruben Zadkovich.
Ruben Zadkovich
* Debut for the club in Season 6 (2010/11) and went on to make 97 appearances for the club.
* In the last two years, he missed only one game which was due to suspension.
* Holds the following records for the Jets:
- 5th most capped Jets player of all time
- Received most yellow cards of any Jets player with 32.
* Started in all 97 of his appearances.
* Scored 6 goals and provided 12 assists.
* Has played the third highest amount of minutes for the club (8526) behind Elrich and Thompson.
* Zadkovich was booked the most times by referee Jarred Gillett (5 times).
* Zadkovich received most of his yellow cards against Brisbane Roar (6). He his first two bookings against Perth Glory in Season 6 but didn’t receive another booking against them in Jets colours in the following years.
* Unfortunately during his time with the club, Zadkovich never got to celebrate scoring a goal at Hunter Stadium. All of his goals were scored away from home.

MCFC CEO Scott Munn was quoted over night that they have 2 squad positions left and both marquee positions to fill.
All our HAL opposition are chasing other targets. It's inly the Jets saying they want Paartalu.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Can we not sign Paartalu tomorrow given that he is contracted until December and the Bosman ruling states that a contracted player can sign with another club in the last 6 months of his contract but still has to complete his contract.
So he signs with us tomorrow, finishes his time with Muang Thong United and is then eligible to play for us come January. Doing this would prevent any other club beating us to the punch before January.

I'm also after top quality strikers - the older the better. Any on your books? Might be able to come to an arrangement for another striker I have no need for.
So do we keep a spot free and wait for him or do we look elsewhere to fill the role?
So what does everyone think we will ACTUALLY do though??
I am thinking we hold off on signing Paartalu and wait for the transfer window and use Nick Ward in the mean time to fill the hole.
Transfer window comes and we are all set to sign Paartalu when Sydney FC swoop in with an offer and are able to still fit him under the salary cap and he ends up in Sydney

Celeski would be a good signing but i just dont know if he is the right signing. I dont think he should be the option instead of paartalu. He would be a good addition to the squad if we had more spots available, but i really think we need a dominant player if we only have one spot left.

Other options might be Jon McKain who is a free agent, or poaching a player from another club ala Jeronimo. Cameron Edwards or Rostyn Griffiths might look for other clubs with Zads preferred in the west.

http://www.theherald.com.au/story/2456970/jets-big-signing-edson-montano-still-grounded-in-ecuador/?cs=2439
THE Jets have not given up hope that star import Edson Montano will arrive in time to make his debut in next week’s round of the FFA Cup.
Montano, the 23-year-old Ecuadorean international striker, is still in his homeland awaiting a visa and his international transfer clearance, five weeks after the Jets announced his signing.
Newcastle play Perth Glory at Magic Park on Tuesday night in the new national knockout competition, a time frame that would suggest Montano is at long odds to be involved.
But Jets chief executive Robbie Middleby was optimistic Montano’s visa could be approved ‘‘any day’’ and Newcastle would then attempt to get him on the next flight.
‘‘We always knew that getting him a visa would be a long process, because he’s from a South American country,’’ Middleby said. ‘‘We would have hoped to have had him here for the game against Perth next week, and we’re still hopeful of that, because any day his visa could be approved.
‘‘We’re pushing it as much as we can. We’ve had a lot of correspondence with his club over there, Australian immigration and their immigration, and it could be any day that we get the approval.
‘‘If the approval was to come in the next couple of days, there’s still a chance [of him playing] because his ITC would be granted straight away.’’
While the Jets sweat on Montano’s arrival, they have ruled out an offer for former Brisbane midfielder Erik Paartalu, playing in Thailand for Muang Thong United.
Paartalu’s agent has told the Jets he will not be available until the January transfer window at the earliest, and Newcastle need to reinforce their midfield before the season kicks off in October.
‘‘He’s one of the players that we were interested in for the holding midfield role,’’ Middleby said. ‘‘But there are a number of options.
‘‘We always look at quite a few players for any position.’’
The Jets have lost holding midfielders Ruben Zadkovich, Josh Brillante and Zenon Caravella over the off-season and need a replacement to provide support for Ben Kantarovski.
The Jets received a boost yesterday when long-time sleeve sponsor NIB agreed to extend its deal another season.
‘‘NIB are an iconic brand, and a local company, so it’s fantastic to be associated with them again,’’ Middleby said. ‘‘We’re very excited about it.’’
Middleby said he had been assured the Jets’ new naming-rights sponsor, Castle Quarry Products, would retain a logo on the club’s playing strip for the full season.
CQP, one of myriad companies belonging to Jets owner Nathan Tinkler, faces an uncertain future.
The Newcastle Herald revealed last week that receivers had been appointed to sell the land that houses the Fullerton Cove sand mine.
‘‘They’re definitely our major sponsor and definitely on the jerseys for the full season,’’ Middleby said.
Middleby said he expected Newcastle’s players to wear the new jerseys against Perth on Tuesday night.
Members can order replica shirts, which are expected to be on sale in shops by the end of the month.

How is this situation the same as Griffiths?
Montano- Waiting on a Visa to work in Australia. Completely out of the clubs control.
Griffiths- Waiting on a International clearance to transfer from another club, said club hardballing Griffiths so they don't have to pay him out, Griffiths refuse to relinquish money his untitled to so clearance is delayed. Completely out of the clubs control.

Yup, completely of the club's control to sign a player from one of the countries that doesn't have an embassy here, ergo making visas very hard to get. It's not as if we haven't already signed a player from Ecuador who had visa issues. Oh wait, there was Zura, wasn't there?
And while I'm glad we did sign him, we know from experience that signing players from Chinese clubs, and indeed Asian clubs in general, is generally very difficult, like Burns not 2 months before we signed Griff. And not unlike Paartalu in the past month.
If you fail to learn the lessons of history, you are doomed to repeat them. Seems very adapt for this club.

You want the club to learn from past mistakes, yet you are happy Montano was signed.......that logic makes no sense.
Off season boredom striking here.
I would rather the club sign the right player no matter what country they come from then restrict our choice to those who can obtain a quickie visa. Particularly when there is 2+ months before the season starts.
Pretty confident in saying other clubs around the world can get a visa organised within 5weeks for an Ecuadorian signing.
I am pretty confident when Valencia went to England the clubs had no issue organising one.
It's also called research. A few phone calls are all that is required to clarify the visa requirements and an assessment as to what is required.

Wonder if that has ANYTHING at all to do with there being an Embassy in London and NOT ONE IN AUSTRALIA as has been pointed out in this thread.
So what does the Ecuadorian having an embassy in London have to do with it???
The signing of an Ecuador player to an English club goes through English government embassy's and not Ecuadorian embassy's
Just as this bloke Montana has to apply to Australian authorities for a work permit to come here. Embassy in Santiago Chile deals with it assuming the Jets can't send it through to someone in this country.
The problems got nothing to do with Ecuador at all.

The Newcastle Jets have appointed former Dutch international Kew Jaliens as the club’s captain for the 2014/15 A-League season.
Jaliens brings his considerable experience to the role, after joining the Jets from the Dutch Eredivisie, where he won the Championship with AZ Alkmaar in 2009, before moving to Polish heavyweights Wisla Krakow, for whom he played in the UEFA Champions League.
The 35-year-old was a key figure for the club during his first season in the Hunter, contributing to six clean sheets in 18 appearances, while also scoring two goals.
Jets head coach Phil Stubbins said Jaliens was the right person to wear the captain’s armband for Newcastle during the 2014/15 campaign.
“The experience Kew has gained playing at the highest level for both club and country makes him a great candidate to captain the Jets this season,” Stubbins said.
“I’m sure Kew will do a fantastic job, along with the other senior players in the group, of leading the squad this coming season.”
Jaliens said he was honoured to be given the privilege of captaining the Newcastle Jets.
“I’m very happy to be given the chance to captain the side this season,” Jaliens said.
“Hopefully I can lead by example with my actions both on and off the field and help guide the team to a successful season.”
Jaliens will captain the Jets for the first time in a competitive match on Tuesday night when they take on Perth Glory in their FFA Cup Round of 32 fixture at Magic Park in Broadmeadow.

Thing that impressed me most about celeski at the tards was his first time forward playing and short passing. He's a positive midfielder that positioned well and gets the play moving forward quickly rather than doin donuts like caravella.

I still think Kanta will come good. We all know what he is capable of, no one ever wants to be out of form, but 2 months out from the start of the season is not a bad time for it. Better than 2 months after the start of the season!
Its great to have celeski for competition, he is a very versatile player, can basically play right across the midfield, I would even give him a run at number 10 until flores is fit. So I don't really think it will be either Kanta or Celeski all the time, if they both play well I would say they will both be in the starting 11.

I know its a long way from season still, but the longer he is here training the better it is.

I think this will be the case and we will play a narrow diamond. However, Celeski will replace Hoole in my lineup. The focus will be on Celeski looking to be the outlet for the side. The fullbacks will need to be providing support too.
Having Goodwin, Hoole, Montano, Regan, Kennedy and probably Pepper as our subs bench looks ok

So do we actually have a spot remaining as per recent reports?
I always thought it was only 1 and that's gone to Celeski. It'll only be if they've somehow moved Ox to a youth contract?
Even if that was the case doubt we'd have any cap left, apart from an aussie marquee (i.e Paartalu in Jan).

Stubbins still does not know when Ecuadorian striker Edson Montano will arrive in Australia
“Montano has completed all designated immigration requirements so we are simply awaiting the stamp of approval,” he said.
“When? Not sure.”

Depends. One of the arms of Buildev was a plastic chair manufacturer so we got a good deal on them. If we still have Tinks, I say no.

Unrelated, but apparently Stubbs is considering having Pepper start at RB as opposed to Neville. Stubbins is apparently pretty high on him
That's the benefit of someone new (Stubs) coming in and seeing things we "rusted-on" supporters might not see???
We've suffered from similar line-ups / structures for so long that I think it starts to burn in to the brain a bit ... and it becomes hard to consider alternative with a fresh perspective.
I'm stoked with the new acquisitions. Despite the result from the FFA game on Tuesday, there was a lot to like about Steele and Jeronimo (to name a few).
Bring it on.

That's a great line-up playing 4-4-2 with a diamond.
If we were to play 4-3-3 I would have Celeski playing the 6 and Steele the 8 with Flores the 10.
Would bring in Goodwin for Hoole to play 11, Joel the 7 and Jeronimo the 9.
Kew is our #1 CB so I think Reegz and Madaschi will fight it out for the 2nd spot.
Reckon Kanta's best hope of getting into the side is at RB this season, should play him there if Neville is not fit....still better option than Pepper or Gallaway.

If Virgilli was given the same opportunities as say Tarek Elrich or Jason Hoffman he would be a regular starter. Both Hoffman and Elrich showed potential and to his credit GVE stuck with them even when many thought they may never make it as a-league regulars.
Virgilli on the other hand has been sporadically used and never really given an opportunity to grow into the role.
Some players thrive on being thrown into the deep end and others don't. However, the fast learners aren't always the best fit in the long term either as they can also tend to peak early and fade away.

Who would you leave out to make way for Virgili?
I would say it is a "make-or-break" season for him, been in the set-up now for a few years but still really a squad or "fringe" player. Up to him now to impress the new coach and really make the most of the opportunities when he is given to play this season. I think his biggest downfall is his own belief in himself (maybe that is a result of being "nurtured" by GVE)....he is a decent enough footballer with some good qualities but needs to back himself more and just go for it.

Virgili came on last game and proceeded to continually get the ball taken off him with ease. he also made poor decisions and ignored open players inside him so he could try and go past the left back in front of him, who incidentally handled him with ease. Great player at npl level but just hasn't warranted a regular place in first grade yet and doubt he ever will. Agree with above, make or break season for him and happy to be proven wrong.
The issue with Chili is it is all between his ears.
In the NYL he just puts his head down and goes forward and backs himself and as a result he carves it up.
In the HAL he seems plagued with doubt and won't back himself. The amount of time he gets the ball and turns back to his goal particularly when in a good position is ridiculous.
Against glory we had 3 on 4 and he had the ball 10 yards in from the sideline and 20 yards out from goal and a little bit of room from the fullback. Perfect time to put your foot down and have a go whilst you have bypassed the opponents midfield and see what happens.
No Chilli runs back towards his goal and 20 seconds later Taylor Regan has the ball and Perth have all 11 behind the ball
Thats where he is letting himself down

IMO Chilli has had many opportunities to show that he is capable but all he shows is that he isn't up to HAL level. Makes the same runs with his head down and can't cross let alone look like scoring. I shudder every time his name is on the team sheet.

If la bala just got his chance
Virgili is just as, or more, frustrating to watch than Henrique for the Roar. Griff in however many games he got to play at RM last season showed how amazingly unreal it is to have a player play RM that actually has confidence on the ball.
Apart from that run for Heskey's goal, which was admittedly brilliant, Virgili has shown SFA at senior level for a very long time. He's just a passenger when on the field IMO.

Last season, maybe. The year before, he played in all but TWO of the games, starting 11 and coming off the bench in 15. Did he do anything of note in those 25 games? Maybe one or two assists.
I won't be so forward as to call him a one trick pony because that is harsh on ponies who actually have one trick.

The same genius who screwed Virgilli deemed NTS and Haliti useless too (not to mention Ljubo and the fact he kept playing Bridges).
Give the kid a chance with a new coach before killing him.
Also, with Griff, Hoole, BK, Kanta and Reegz he's a Newy boy so should get unwavering support from the punters.

Lack of game time isn't the issue.
Watch him play NYL and the bloke carves it up and is way too good for that league. The issue lies between his ears with him believing in himself at HAL level which he clearly doesn't and the idiots Middleby employs to coach him who CAN NOT get the best out of him at HAL level. A massive failing in the past on the part of GVE Deans Zane etc Hopefully Stubbins will not join this list
Unlike some of the punters here I actually believe the bloke has the ability to do it at HAL level
Game time is one thing. It is up to Chilli to actually believe in himself and actually DO IT so the coaches have no reason not to pick him

But wouldn't Zane have been coaching him during most of his NYL games where he was carving up or was that a different coach? Personally, I think it does just come down to the mental and has nothing on the coach, I doubt every coach we've had as consistently told him to run down the line, either stop and try and skill a player just to get beat or do terrible crosses

Zane was only in charge of the NYL side for a year and a bit all up.
Last I looked it was the coaches responsibility to get his players playing at their potential. In Virgilis case our coaches are sadly found wanting
