Compare Tinkler starting off with the gimmicky Beckham/La Galaxy thing....yeah it was a great night and all that but where did the club end up under him a few years down the track because we were still basically in a semi-professional set-up!
Need to find a balance though, one ot two name players (not necessarily marquees) would give fans a but of a buzz and hope that hey we can improve on last seasons 8th spot and give the top 6 a real challenge.
basically what I said when I had a number of radio stations ring me for comment the day of the Martin Lee announcement. I said while I wasnt expecting money to be splashed on marquees straight away, what we really needed was investment ASAP in the front office and ancilliary coaching staff. We are running with 8 people in the front office, even the gypos have more.
Makes last seasons accomplishments in the admin of the club especially around the RAAF round, Greater community engagement initiative and the huge increase in commercial sponsorships a fantastic effort.

Sensible words, remind yourself of these before you go on your little rambles about Mr Lee.

Paul Keating's "always back self interest" makes me look into his motives and they're a darn sight better than Tinkler's.

Boost business and reputation in Asia (and stroke ego) by getting a club into the ACL to see company make money in "new technology"
Send some Chinese players and staff out here to learn the Australian "never say die" attitude.

    Versus

Try and keep the plebs happy by "saving" the club so you can get political sway in order to get more "old technology" out of the port.

I know which self interest goals I'd like to be riding the coat tales of.

Now he's just gotta deliver on his promises for all our enjoyment.

Basically Lee/Ledman Group have got bigger fish to fry than Tinkler, there's is a global strategy and they see the Newcastle Jets as a conduit to expand into Australia and at the same time forge links which will eventually be part of Chinese football's plan to become a powerhouse within 10 years.
Just be patient my friends but I really think we are on a winner with Martin Lee though it's just not going to happen overnight.

I mean, you know he was pretty much putting politicians on the payroll in order to get that 'sway' right?

No bunch of Mong football fans were going to influence the coal loader decision.
    Not one iota.

He saved the club because with good intentions. He was no where near ready to deal with people who had less money but more power than him.
    That's where the shit started.

Let's hope Mr Lee doesn't suffer the same fate ey.

I still subscribe to the theory Tinkler only took on the Jets to get his ultimate prize, the Knights. All the grandstanding and splashing the cash on stuff like the Galaxy game etc was done to impress the Knights with his spending power and secure that deal. Unfortunately for us, the NRL were more cautious than FFA and p*ssed him off a bit quicker but once he lost his baby he pretty much spat the dummy and wanted to offload us, just wasn't cluey enough to know how - ended up losing us which is ironic seeing as he at one stage tried to hand us back only to find that he couldn't...
Life isn't the same without Con... but it can only improve without Tinks...

Nah he spat the dummy once he spoke to fat Clive and discovered he'd been shafted by FFA. That was the moment he gave up.
To be fair as much as 'a fool and his money etc etc' it was more naïveté on his part that he thought he was doing something good.

His behaviour once he gave up was disgraceful and unacceptable but I guess we can all make our own assumptions on how we'd deal with getting swindled by a bunch of homeless people.

But I agree that helping the Jets didn't hurt his chances with the Knights. He was even pretty open in saying he wanted to be white knight*.

*soz, no other term was apt.

His motive behind owning local sporting teams was to suck people in to believe we needed a fourth coal loader,

I'll give the phat khunt-roller credit for two things only (Galaxy aint one of them, what a waste of money ) - 1. Heskey, 2. cinnamon and emerald awaay shirts - on the second though he can go phuck himself for giving us the bane of having to deal with BLK, how soon can we ditch those pricks???

    Spot on.

His ONLY interest in the Jets was to make the dumbass Boganball community in Newcastle think "What a great guy, true novocastrian - let's just give him the knights bogans on a platter".
The initial cash splash on LA Galaxy was just a faux statement that he hoped would also make money. The "investment" in the Jets dried up very quickly after that.

If he had any business nous at all he would have realised the opportunities for sponsorship/partnerships from China. His business was mining in a period where there was still a HUGE amount of money in that sector and China was where the bulk of our coal was going. Need a new coal loader??? And yet he did not take advantage of these opportunities because that was not his focus.

Lee/Ledman group seem to have a sensible, sustainable business plan which involves a considerable amount of Chinese money coming into the club via sponsorship, online streaming of games, etc. The group has a solid history of investing in football globally and I hope they get the global/community mix right, plus get results on the park.

^^ Sooo this. Been saying this for three years, any mining magnate worth his salt would identify the synergies between football, China and mining. Tinks did not either see it or could not be half-arsed as it meant co-operation. And like Con everything had to be under his total control. We could have set up long term partnerships and when the time was right Tinks coulda sold it (and a mine) to a Chinese billionaire.

On a lighter note - nice little slideshow when you kick back with a coffee today...

This is our last season with them under the current contract.

The member's sub-committee have told the club the material is crap and the club should look at a better manufacturer.

You reckon? I would be more inclined to think they would go with a recognised football brand, maybe even the one that sponsors their Chinese team or one that has links to the Portuguese divisions.
