The “Melb City wants to steal the sky blue strip from Sydney” rule is also official (although this one is at least funny).

Do they really create a gap in the competition? I don't think they really do.
Think of the big names we have had here...

    Dwight Yorke
    Robbie Fowler
    Heskey
    Del Piero
    Ono

    Of the Aussies
    Kewell
    Culina
    Kennedy
    Emerton

Not many titles among that group!

This is for big names, bums on seats players. I think the good publicity and attendances will far out weigh the "gap" caused.
And when did any of these actually bring extra bums, besides maybe Del Piero?

Last year was great for attendance, and we had no big names. The game will grow itself, without short term players.

We got big numbers because we were the cheapest in the league and had a new owner who promised the world. Hardly because of Heskey.

Nah. I had people at work going to games purely because Emile Heskey was playing for the Jets.

I'm sure all those bandwagon fans knew exactly who Emile was and what he had done over seas.

Exactly... but you are saying that Emile had nothing to do with our increased crowds?

Yep. Few of them were exactly that. No interest in Jerks until William Ivanhoe showed up.

Harry Kewell in his season at Victree also had an impact on bums on seats.

Other than that there was **** all difference

    Timmy will do the same

I have no dramas with Heart signing Timmy.

I just take offence to this 3rd Marquee situation that is being created.

Either fit him or one of the other Marquee under the cap and reduce the overall quality of their squad.

What upsets me is given time the bigger clubs will exploit this at the detriment of the league's balance.

Whilst we have a salary capped league this is making it more of a farce.

A club with excessive Money should be investing into club infrastructure and juniors to make clubs stronger and give them a competitive advantage over their rivals

Not frittered away on player wages by giving them a better squad

2012/2013 was a decent year for results early on. Could also contribute extra bums to that..
2012/2013 was also the year WSW was added to the league, bringing their masses to away games..

My point is, Marquees should be, what the "Season Guest player" is.. A named player who will increase exposure and bring people to the stadium. We don't need the "Season Guest Player", just so 1 or 2 teams can use all the extra cash they have to make more cash.

Yes, its good for the league, in the short term, but its not good for the league long term, when you end up with the "haves" and the "have nots"...

I don't get the hate of "bandwagon fans".
These are the people we need to bring into see our game, for whatever reason, and enjoy it so much that they become loyal fans.

Agree completely. It makes a complete mockery of the Salary cap to introduce a third marquee (when most clubs cant afford one) just to appease a club and one player.

Fit them in, move a lesser marquee on or play within the rules. Don't change them just because one club is cashed up.

Sure Timmy will be great for the league, but the long term implications will be a greater divide between the big and little clubs.

I for one welcome a greater divide between the big and little clubs. The ones with the stupid amounts of money SHOULD spend it and improve the quality of their squads.

I vote for abolishing the celery cap.

I tend to agree. It is no good that the league is run to be only as strong as the weakest club but restricting the have's too far. If we want the league to grow, we need more bums on seats, more tv money both here and abroad and by having the wealthier clubs spending coin on more name players that is one way that will happen, this should in theory flow onto everyone else with more money available in the game. Life is not always fair and if clubs cannot be run effectively then the whole league should not suffer

Everyone always goes "oh but if you abolish the cap, club's will go bankrupt"... but clubs are already doing that. What will happen is the club's that don't want to overspend won't. They will have NPL calibre players and they will finish dead last. How is that different to last season with the exception that the NPL calibre player's got paid well over their worth by the scum?
