I know the focus seems to be around the frontline presently but we desperately need a midfield anchor. 3 very decent players currently uncontracted are milligan (wishful i know but his name keeps coking up), paartalu and holland. Those last 2 obviously seem more attainable. All 3 are capable of holding down the mids and very good at distribution. One of these paired next to ugar or brown, who i believe should be competing for the one spot rather than teamed up, and suddenly we are looking more solid than we have in years, atleast on paper.
100% agree.
If we sign one of these 3 and a decent CB I would be infinitely more confident of competing with teams this year. Our spine is still the weakest part of our team, and we do probably have the weakest in the HAL.
That said, we could also really use a half-decent attacker to get the plastics excited. Very doom and gloom at the moment which, although fine for us loyal shit-slingers, isn't great for getting mums and dads wasting their hard-earned at the club to subsidise the price of beer and jets-shaped hats and what not?
What's the go with Sainsbury? Loaned to Inter because they had too many imports at his CSL team. Played like 20 mins of football in the last game.
Imagine someone bringing both he and Spiranovic back to the HAL.... Sainsbury on marquee wages, Spiranovic on heavy wages of course.
Didn't Holland say that he preference on returning to the A League was Newcastle but he got an off that the Jets couldn't or wouldn't match?
Haha you guys. It's a Xmas miracle that we seem to be signing one decent player in Petratos, let alone 2. But 3 or 4.....well keep on dreaming
Milligan didn't basically confirm it, 4 weeks ago he flat out said he wanted to stay in the gulf and had no intention of returning. And that was to a direct question about the media speculation around coming to the Jets. That's pretty emphatic to me. I don't think he is off contract but his club Baniyas was relegated. There are other clubs still looking for their Asian quota player, a
Al Wanda being one that was rumoured. So the chances he doesn't have any offers anywhere, then decides to return and chooses the Jets....it's just not going to happen.
Paartalu is a fraud and I would rather we played Kanta there than that wage thief. He has been living off his Brisbane reputation for years collecting massive pay cheques. People forget how dire he was for MC the last time he was in Australia.
Jimmy is probably the only maybe. His stocks would be low after the China debarcle. Would he take the peanuts we would be offering I am not so sure.
Didn't say Milligan would come here. Even if he did return to Aus it would be with Victory. All I said was world game article stated he is off contract in July. No one will know where he heads until then. I believe realistically we will get Burns and Petratos. Make do with Brown and Uga in mids with thin coverage in Kanta. Have a backline of Geroge/Hoff/Jackson/Boogs with thin coverage in Cowburn/Vujica. With that squad I believe we could be mid table.
All good to speculate just the chances are so remote. Milligan would be a dream if it ever came off.
What hasn't been mentioned yet about Lawrie's NBN interview is that he stated we may only sign 3 more players, not 4, and not use our 5th Visa signing.
That would mean Petratos, Chinese Player and new Marquee to round out the squad.
2 Chinese players are coming to trial in July for that position.
Maybe they're keeping that spot, and the $$, free for scenarios such as if Kokko gets a contract in Finland, what Robbie Kruse gets up to, etc. Leaving a bit of play room in case something pops up on the horizon.
OK
yawn......Nothing cryptic about what Millsy said.
"I am not really looking to come home. It's hard ... I know the A-League, I played there quite a bit and I know a lot of the players and coaches.
"Its probably not my first preference at the moment.
"I love Australia, and I love the football there and I'm sure at some stage, whether it is playing or in some other capacity, I will be involved there again.
"But this moment, I am looking to see what comes up abroad to make the move as easy as possible."
Referring to the Jets and Al Shabab links, an amused Milligan said: "The first I heard of it was when my mum and dad messaged me!"
I don't mind the idea of keeping a Visa spot free. Worked well for SFC last year when they suddenly needed a CB mid season.
[edit] I doubt they are saving any cash though. What I would gather is that we are spending more than we expected on these next 2 signatures. If Kokko leaves that's an extra Visa spot anyway

Mind you, this is the Guest visa spot that Essien & Diamanti didn't qualify for. Convincing the FFA of the calibre of player a club wants to sign to this rule is a lot of work. And judging off the things I've seen Victory & SFC CEOs do, compared to ours, I don't hold much faith in ours tbh.
OK
