Conclusion: The private system is very small and would not cope without the public system taking on the lions share of admissions.

The US has completed 579,589 tests as of yesterday, which is 1766 tests per 1 million people.
Australia had completed 190,926 which is 7442 tests per million people.
So, yeah Australia is definitely winning that race by a country mile. We have like the 3rd best rate of testing per person in the world.
Now, which country has better control of the rate of infection right now is a more important question? And who is closer to their maximum capacity of hospital beds now as well?
I read that NYC emergency services received more 911 calls yesterday then on September 11! That's fairly scary.

The US people spent the first few days of the preparation stocking up on bullets and they have a president telling them to not worry about isolation rules, to keep going out and spending money and that everything will be better in 2 weeks time once a few of your grandparents have died off to save people's portfolios taking a big hit. Unfortunately it's going to get a lot worse over there before it gets better and it won't matter what colour your state voted. I would absolutely love to be wrong and you be correct and the US to absolutely smash this virus and get things under control quick, cause that would save 1000s of lives. But there's nothing coming out of there that is even remotely positive in regards to control over spread or hospitals being prepared to deal with the influx of patients.

I mean, this is simple logic. The virus is spread via direct contact, of course it would spread quicker in a more densely populated city. If you can't work this one out, find a high schooler and ask them to explain how viruses spread.
Both those cities were well prepared because of the original SARS outbreak in 2003, I think that's the correct year but you know which one I'm talking about. Both cities/countries have done extremely well and their examples, especially Singapore, should have been followed by every other nation as soon as it became clear that they had control of the spread in a short time span. Although, South Korea is bracing for a resurgence and Tokyo is having trouble keeping idiots away from the cherry blossoms which has caused another spike in cases. So hopefully they get that back under control soon.
Cuomo could be a terrible leader, no idea, but all sides of politics in the US right now are more worried about what they can get out this than actually saving lives. The US turned down tests because they wanted to wait for US owned ('cough' Jared Kushner owned) companies to copy the design and make a profit. They are arguing over the price right now of Ventilators. State leaders are getting into Twitter arguments with Trump instead of getting the equipment/funding they need to try and fix their underprepared hospitals.

Honestly I haven't read thru all of MFKFCs posts about the USA here but I'll share a story and feel free to make your own judgements or throw your head into the sand based around it.
I know two Aussies permanently living in New York. One of them is in the at risk category for Coronavirus as his immune system is destroyed from being a cancer recovered person. These two Aussies both got all symptoms of Coronavirus and were super sick. They could NOT get tested, they just were not allowed. In New York they are ONLY testing people that are quite literally on deaths door, and they are openly saying this for people that have every symptom and asking to be tested. These Aussies have no doubts they had the virus, and have recovered now, but they'll never know and never go onto the proper figures. They've also kept track of all of the Australian media releases, reports, figures, etc and their judgement is USA are in "50 times worse a state currently".
From this I conclude USA numbers are horrendously higher than being reported. Also before this I believed Australia were not testing enough, and possibly that is still true but it is nowhere near as bad comparatively to other nations.

Australia's response is hampered because we have states with considerable constitutional power both in writing and by convention. Hence states closing internal borders. We also have government departments at both levels with a large overlap.
New Zealand also has a unicameral parliament and no states. Australia has a bicameral parliament with states who also have bicameral parliaments (Queensland excepted)
When this is over you will find the federal government becomes significantly weaker due to poor leadership and the states playing a larger and larger role.
