Ben O'Neill, Jets Media Manager for those who don't know the name, has announced he's leaving the club and heading to the FFA. I've had a lot to do with Ben over the last few years with the podcast, player data and Wingman material and he's been professional, flexible and helpful.

He's being replaced by Matt Townsend is replacing him. He worked with Lawrie at Gosford Council, according to an article by Barry Toohey that was tweeted yesterday.

So Gypo CEO now is just filling the club with his Gypo mates now ??

If that is ever proposed I would go off in the member's group.

I just tweeted him and asked if he'd change You'll Never Walk Alone? Forever Blowing Bubbles or Follow Follow?

The song is part of teh club's soul - and if they change it they'd be removing part of what we are.

But hey, everything else appears up for grabs regardless of the history in the joint so why not.

Eye Of The Tiger is the most hackneyed "fire up" song of all time - utterly sick of it.

My fave A-League theme is City's - different and you can't help but feel good.

Good to see him back! I think he will do well at the Nix.

While he would have been a serviceable option for the Jets, does anyone here see he would be anything greater than a squad player? The Jets at this point are in need of starters.

One of the most likeable blokes in Australian football, but for me he's only a a squad player.

As for McKinna's comments about "Great question" regarding changing NTUA. By the reaction he received on Twitter, I can't see it being charged, ever.

Nor can I.

He responded this morning which was good, saying he only answered the question and he needs to respond to questions. I have no issue and agree with that - it was the answer he gave I took exception to. As I said above, or on Twitter, you can say "thanks for the question, but Never Tear Us Apart is the team song and it means so much to the team and their relationship with the fans" (for example)

Could have sworn it was brown. Lots of play from centre backs to wings via raking long balls. Jets have probably had about 70-80% possession. Nobody has disgraced themselves by wearing gloves (apart from duncan obviously) but lots of long sleeves.

that mullen reference really cost me :rof:

on to the game...

positives
- scored 5
- conceded none
- cowburn looked alright playing as a DM but admittedly didn't have a lot to do
- controlled the game
- relatively clinical in front of goals

negatives
- still a lot of poor crosses
- still a lot of poor touches
- bit predictable (mid to long ball to wide players when the defender got to about the half way, wide players press forward, cross in)
- looked a bit slow (they may have had a hard session during the day)
- lot of offsides

think they played at about 75% for the whole game. i give them 6 out of 10.

olympic were good value, tried hard all game, weren't humiliated in any way but were clearly a class below (or two) the jets. i give them 8 out of 10.

i don't think we should be making boogard the captain this year. don't give the captaincy to somebody who isn't a guaranteed starter, and i don't think he and topor can play too many games together.

correct me if im wrong but didn't O'Donovan get caught offside a lot during his time with the coast?

hopefully with the new chinese winger we can have Nabbout not on the wing who i'd say is responsible for a lot of the poor touches and poor crosses

Coffs Harbours I could begrudgingly accept because it's in the NNSW region. Canberra is not (sorry Belch). Let Gallop's Southern Shire team service that area.

He lost me when he called the fans frauds.
Truth is the decline over the last 3 years (because you can't compare 1 single season as he has) has been experienced by both clubs.

Average crowd decline 1.8% for Knights and 3.6% for Jets. That's not bad. In fact the Jets middle season saw an increase (Miller sesson) while the knights season had declined.

The assumption could be made many of the crowd attend both and quite a few are members of both. Or perhaps families simply can't afford the luxury spend of both codes so they choose.

The jets have never been "newcastle's" they were Con's play thing, Tinkler's snot rag and now people are waiting to see what Lee does.

Add in the media coverage the Nrl gets, and that many in the region who decide how a family budget is spent are like the author and not brought up on the game, and the numbers aren't surprising.

Compare jets crowds to Nsl crowds from 20years ago, compare knights crowds now to 20 years ago and see which way the trends are going - that's what I'd be interested in/worried about

I think the 3 goals we conceded are down to him

First one that corner the Gypos scored off
Your centre half clears that cross

First one glory got you marking Taggart you blocking his shot or stopping him shooting

Second one that is Boogaard ball to win in the air

As an experienced campaigner and our captain he needs to be doing much much better

The money we paying him is also drastically disproportionate to his actual worth to the side

So he needs to be performing and when he not I going to call him on it

Whilst Boogard is partly to blame I think he's coping a fair bit of stick. He made too excellent tackles in the box this game and last game and him and Topor have looked fairly competent both along the ground and in the air. We seem to struggle with runners coming from deep. It hasn't only been the CB fault but also the CDMs picking up and tracking their runners. Ugarkovic has been sub par by his standards this year. Was caught wrong side by the coast goal albeit a slight deflection helped. I still think we are one quality midfielder short of being a very good side.

This is pretty much what i was getting at.
Boogard has not been good enough, particularly as he is on good $$$$. In saying that to blame him for all 3 goals we have conceded is a bit of a stretch.
Take the goals from the weekend and break them down.
Goal no.1 on the weekend, how on earth in such tight space did we allow castro to knock a cross in like he did? It should have been so easily defended out wide. We actually had 3 defenders on 2 attackers in the very corner yet he gets the cross in.

Goal no.2 on the weekend, midfield giving the opposition space followed by an absolutely amateur clearance lead to a huge amount of space and time in a wide area to get the cross right for Taggart. Do you think with less time and space (ie pressure) the cross may have been no where near as good and therefore not effective.

This doesn't mean Boogard escapes criticism as he could have perhaps done better to track his man and prevent or just pressure the shots, but why is it only him thats to blame?

Basically who is more to blame, the slack defending on the goal scorer or the slack defending on the final pass?
I don't really know how to blame one person more than the other

The Dunster
17-10-2017, 01:00 PM
The slack defending on the final pass and the failed clearance before it were what allowed the 2nd Goal. Once the cross was into the box I think it's unfair to blame Boogs - especially when Taggart is running onto the ball which gives him a massive advantage.

Of course there is good quality play (and the cross and finish for the first goal were excellent), but the defending was poor. Taggart made a run across 2 central defenders (over 5 metres) and neither were aware/fast enough to track him.
2nd goal Boogard just wasn't aware of Taggarts run, but again, good finish.
So I would say the goals on the weekend were a combination of good play and less than stellar defending.

Boogard would know it though, and seems like the kind of fella that will be burning inside set it right this weekend. At least we look like we might score goals at the other end this year.

The cross into the box for the 2nd Perth goal was excellent because the Jets failed to close down the man with the ball. If they put more pressure on the player with the ball Taggart would not have received such a high quality cross in the first place.

It was unfortunate to concede in the 92nd minute but we also had two very good opportunities ourselves where we didn't score as well.

Teams going well, room for improvement and all - but compared to last season we look like Barcelona.

More importantly Ernie knows what he's doing. He took two players off on Sunday because they were cramping and he didn't want them to risk calf injuries as they can take six weeks or so to mend.

In the past our coaches would have let players continue until they required a stretcher.

Then you have the clubs engagement with the fans and free ticket offer... The clubs doing well why do we have to keep looking for faults within it ?

My engagement in this conversations was solely in response to the goals conceded and the suggestion that maybe we couldn't attach any blame to our players for them. I feel they could have been defended better, that's my only point.
But I certainly take the point that on the whole, the club and the fans have been stuck in a mire of negativity for so long that maybe we don't know how to be happy. We aren't going to go from a shambles to top of the league overnight, but I agree with every point you have made regarding the team, coach and club as a whole doing some really positive things.

That second goal

Quality touch from Taggart to give Duncan no chance

But

But

But

Why was he able to have a free header ??

If Boogaard is up competing for the ball with him and he gets that finish away then just have to take your hat off to him

But when the bloke is unmarked and not put under any pressure then questions are entitled to be asked

It piss poor form to be so careless from our central defenders in the 91st minute when you defending a lead

You can gap on about poor clearances and lack of pressure on the bloke crossing the ball

No one is tolerating it, everyone has acknowledged that Boogard made an error or could have done better. It's not good enough from someone like him, instead you seem to tolerate other issues that lead up to the goals as they are not players you have an obvious bias against.
In the end, we are a mid table (at best) team in the A-League, if you expect no mistakes or errors or poor judgement then you are delusional!

When Topor ****s up he will cop it too

The lack of pressure and the poor clearance are minor minor issues that need addressing

The lack of pressure in our box marking their striker is an urgent issue that should never be happening

So far this season we have for 95% of the time defended well

The rest of the time our defending has been well below par for this level or any level of professional football for that matter

So far this season we have a penchant for needlessly conceeding corners far too often

We have looked poor at defending corners with Topor and Boogaard in the side I struggle to understand why this is do

Our keeper makes things worse by his reluctance to dominate his six yard box so that now every team is going to ping every corner into our 6 yard box until we get our shit together

The other issue is we been extremely slack at times dropping off the concentration levels for little reason

We also show signs of being exposed for pace at some point though so far we have gotten away with it

You think I being harsh??
