Funny I read that now, I spotted her having lunch at Warners Bay today and wondered if she was in town for something like that.
Hopefully the women can do well, to have both teams doing well and playing entertaining football, and building on the popularity of the Matilda's, they should hopefully only add to the crowd numbers as there are a few double headers this year.

The Newcastle Jets can confirm that Ronald Vargas has undergone surgery in Brisbane last night, following a broken and dislocated ankle sustained in the club’s Round 3 clash with the Roar. The incident, which saw the Venezuelan international tangle awkwardly with Matt MacKay in the 58thminute of the fixture, has left the club and the league in shock.
Jets’ boss, Ernie Merrick said the club’s medical team had moved quickly to ensure Ronald would receive the best possible care.
“We actually had one of Brisbane’s best surgeons, Dr Jeremy Bartlett sitting in the stands and he came down straight after the incident to help safely manage Ron’s ankle,” said Merrick.
“In consultation with Dr Neil Halpin, who was already on the phone from Newcastle, Dr Bartlett left the game and operated on Ron immediately and we can’t thank him enough for his efforts.
“This was a terrible accident and we’re all feeling for Ron, but it was no ones fault.”
Following his surgery, it’s expected that Ronald will fly back to Newcastle with teammates today to begin his road to recovery.
“The report from the surgeon has been positive at this stage, but with such a significant injury there are a lot of unknowns – Ron will recuperate and we’ll begin planning his rehabilitation.
“At this stage, we’re really not sure what a timeline for his return looks like, but we’d expect that he’ll be unavailable for most of the season.
Merrick said the coaching staff and the players would be with Ronald through every step of his rehabilitation.
“As you could see yesterday, the players and the staff have been really affected by this injury,” he added.
“He may have only been here for a short time, but Ron has already made an impression on all of us and that speaks to the quality of the guy – we’ll all be there to support him throughout his recovery.
“The outpouring of support from across Newcastle and the wider footballing community has been amazing, we appreciate it and I have not doubt that Ron will feel the same.
“I’d also like to acknowledge the Brisbane Roar medical team and event staff for their assistance; the tireless work of our physio Justin Dougherty, who spent much of the evening with Ron, and Joel Griffiths for his ongoing support last night.”
The club will provide further details on Ronald’s injury once they are known.

It's one thing about W-League that irks me - squads aren't finalised till days before kickoff and the players swap clubs almost annually. It makes it hard to engage with the team.
It's a different scenario but imagine the A-League team if four players rocked up the week before kickoff!

Pay them as full time employees year round and they may be here for pre-season. If not they need to be earning a living and come here late as to not lose money.

As a show of support for the Venezuelan, the Jets will ask fans for a minute’s applause in the eighth minute of the clash against Wanderers.
“I have never seen an outpouring of emotion for an injured player like this,” McKinna said. “At a meeting of A-League clubs today, all the chairman wanted to talk about was Ronny.
“Sunday will be an opportunity for fans to show Ronny what he means to Newcastle. He is such a good guy and has fitted in very well. It looked like he was going to be something special and in the long-term hopefully he can be.”
Let's milk this guys - the standing ovation, turning to the players box, Ronny stands in tears, waves and taps his heart, Harps launches into a stream of emotive descriptors on the commentary, RBB turn their backs....Roy scores again during the distraction.

I was in a pool recently with a W-League team (Canberra United). They were strong girls; incredibly strong. Muscle definition like you wouldn't believe. Lisa de Vanna in particular: wow. She was bulging all over. Michelle Heyman, too. I was up close. I had a good perve. I felt puny.
Sorry, there's not really a point to this anecdote, other than to say W-League players are fricken athletes.

Also doesnt help that none of the clubs W-League pages are updated with their current squads either.
I thought that the clubs ran their own sites, but if they were all handled independently surely some of them would be updated correctly.

i don't disagree. at all levels if government. why give $1.6 billion to three stadiums (or whatever the sydney stadium upgrades costs) used by commercial businesses when you could distribute that money across the state and create a massive boost to grassroot sports in all codes? but hey, they get in to office and they only have to answer to the public every 4 years.

The stadiums are a different issue
SFS is in need of demolishing apparently??
It concrete and steel and built in 1988
So it 29 years old
How the **** is it falling apart??
Parramatta Stadium was built in 1986. So it only 31 years old
Yeah it probably a little too small ideally but there was **** all need to level it
The Olympic Stadium was built in 1999 and then had a redevelopment in 2003
The only reason they looking at rebuilding it is they really ****ed it up the first time
3 needless stadium rebuilds when they could have built a new ground somewhere for less cash and all to butter up for elections

I couldn’t directly compare (on the same screen) anything prior to the current season.
Hope you find the following useful -

To clarify, I’m not saying Hoffman is better than Georgievski. I am saying that the difference between them isn’t as wide as most might think.

i'm surprised by the stats, cause i was definitely thinking georgevski was far better than the hoff. when he hit the cross on the weekend my first though was "merrick really is a miracle worker, hoff hit that one all right!" :rof:

actually one underrated thing id not given enough credit to Petratos for are his runs off the ball. so many times this year he has created space for strikers by making the extra run when most times hed have to know hes not getting the ball. thats a pretty good teammate to have.
never noticed 'if' he did it for Brisbane but he looks a way better player for us. again though, it could be me totally underrating him. which im more than happy to put my hand up and admit to.

Much like when Miller was dismissed and people were making similar comparisons with Jones (i.e. How would Miller have HIS team performing?), the fans making these points need to move on.
The difference here, for mine, is Merrick has had some instant success so the focus has been on how the team are performing and Merrick is experience, not a rookie like Stubbins, Miller and Jones. Last season we had a dip before the strong middle part of the season so the challenges over Jones' appointment when compared to Miller was a more relevant discussion. Additionally, Miller was popular and had started to take us ahead from where Stubbins left us - Jones had taken us back to the wooden spoon.
What interests me greatly if we allow ourselves to forget squad additions etc is what each coach got out of the existing squad that is directly comparable.
Under Merrick, I see Kanta & Vujica in particular as reaching way bigger heights than they did under Jones. Particularly Vujica - and Merrick has spoken publicly about how he viewed his previous performances as opposed to what he wanted output-wise from him. It feels like Merrick has coached Vujica into a more suitable style and mentality for our system, and so far he has been thriving from it.
Inversely under Jones we had a fair amount of reliance at times on Jackson, Johnny K, Cowburn & to an extent Clut and none of those three currently look barely on the radar of replicating their previous form either due to not being given enough chance or not good enough for our setup now. And definitely Clut but also to an extent Johnny K look almost ostracised by Merrick. Let's not forget Jackson, Cowburn & Clut were all part of Gombau's Olyroos too.
So that makes me wonder in Lowey's fantasy land where Jones gets the same squad additions that Merrick has gotten, how differently those half a dozen above mentioned squad players would and wouldn't be used.

Bigger issue is 2 of those coaches played conservative (defensive) football, the other is way more flamboyant.
Signings or no signings Merrick ‘style’ is much more fan friendly and would be coaching it no matter who was wearing the shirt.
Also Miller kept publicly throwing his players under the bus. That’s just a terrible way to coach. I don’t wanna see or hear any of that shit.

To Miller's defence the players didn't TECHNICALLY have the right MENTALITY to perform TACHTICALLY on the pitch.

but
can someone explain to me what exactly we are reading from 'Lowey'?
He basically just gives the same hackneyed point form rundown from the weekend, except by the time its 'news', the cliched drivel has already been spouted out on TV, in print and online for days.
where in these columns is he offering any sort of original thinking?
here are his revelations:
- No one thought the Jets would be this good.
- Merrick has an attacking philosophy
- Sydney will be a difficult game
ok cheers Captain Obvious.
although congrats to the bloke on getting paid to run this racket. ill never knock a bloke for getting that cash.

Only reason I can think of is that the player was contracted through the last window but has since been released or season finished ie MLS. Therefore they can't be signed until January

For arguments sake
Let's just say they were playing in China USA Japan etc
Places whose club football don't follow the Euro Calender etc
These leagues are either finished or finishing up
Some of them may still technically under contract to say Jan 1st but not staying at their current club after that
So they might be able to get an agreement in place where they get permission to train here before Jan 1 etc

Was thinking this too. Only thing that concerns me is that such player would mean they are being 'let go'. However I guess it would be a similar situation to Vargas and they may be chasing a new challenge.

99% of players we sign have probably been 'let go' from other clubs. I can't imagine us outbidding other teams often, or offering something good enough for a player to jump ship from a team that still wants them. The only recent example seems to be Roy - that hardly counts, who wouldn't jump at the chance to leave the scum?

Cahill leaving, as well as Brandan. That means McCormack will be able to be retained, yeah?
I could see Tim at WSW. He'd link with a former Socceroos Assistant, who has could have an issue with the main striker at the club. The relationship between Gombau and Riera appears a bit frosty at the moment.
Tom Smithies interestingly posted the UAE transfer window opens next week.

Cahill was not a marquee at City this year.
City's two marquees are: Bruno Fornaroli (with McCormack as injury replacement), and Mardin Budzinski (the number 27 from the weekend that didn't do much).
So McCormack staying still relies on Forn + Budz.. Cahill leaving changes nothing.
Cahill frontloaded his contract to the enth degree so was marquee last year but salary cap player this year. Which it's hard not to be skeptical and judge his leaving now a little bit more. He has a hell of an agent.

Question for the experts here. If a player signs for three years as a marquee. Do they need to be the marquee for the entire contract or just the first year ?
I'd hope it's for the entire duration of the contract, otherwise it's a rort of epic proportions.

They can be front or back loaded.
Cahill's contract was 2 years + an option. First year marquee, second year (this current season) cap player, third i think coaching etc.
Hahmez Troisi, on the other end of the stick, has back loaded his current Victory contract so is cap player this year, marquee next.
Sydney FC once notably front loaded Nick Carle's contract, and he went on loan to somewhere west on a loan during it too.
Sydney's Polish player is under the cap. Which makes City's Polish marquee even more ridiculous to be marquee, when you compare their respective CV's.
Joe Champness, currently with us, recently signed a 3 year deal which sees him continue as a Scholarship Player for this season but become a regular cap player for the next two.
Perth Glory once realised with bonuses etc that they were projecting to accidentally go over the salary cap so instantly moved Thwaite & Marinkovic to marquee spots so they wouldn't rort the cap (which they eventually did anyway).
Clever agents all round.

Thanks PV4 - it's a lot worse than I thought then.
It's not the agents that are clever it's the FFA enabling a system which benefits the clubs with the most money to innovate around the salary cap.
Much the same as the ATO does for the wealthiest citizens as opposed to everyone else come tax time.

But it been like that ever since FFA changed the rules to allow Smurfs to pilfer Weak Ankles and Disco Stu from us by introducing an Olyroo allowance so as they could fit them in without going over the cap
It just been more and more downhill since then with the Socceroos marquee then the 3rd Marquee just so Timmy could go to Heart etc

The only creative money loophole I've ever disagreed with is when CCM had 3 marquee players in 07/08 when only 1 was allowed.
The rest though, I say fair play to clubs with enough money and in particular the right people pulling the strings (read: Anthony de Pietro, Tony Pignata, John Tsatsimas) to make this kind of shit happen.
Although it IS hard not to feel somewhat salty about Cahill & City. The FFA help subsidise a lot of marquee players, including Heskey for us (they subsidised part of ADP, Heskey & Ono's wages that season as they validated the spend as marketing for the league which tbf it was), but to make this "Marquee Fund" that was meant to be league-wide and only went to Cahill & City, and then basically restrict its use so only about a dozen blokes globally could qualify for it (read: genuine EPL star), for the other AL clubs it's a bit hard to be overly happy with how this has all gone down.

Who did the gypos have?
Who did the gypos have?
Their marquee player was Tony Vidmar.
They then signed John Aloisi and Alvin Ceccoli to wages that did not go towards the salary cap as they were signed as injury replacement players for like Matt Osman and someone else, and the rules then said an IRP could be paid anything and not go to the cap. The FFA even labelled it publicly a "creative loophole". After that the FFA restricted IRP to be on the same or less money than the injured player, plus they had to be the same or similar position to the injured player (which we somehow convinced the FFA that Nick Ward was a right back a few years ago).
