Forget useless terms like marquee. You could count the number of real " Marquee " players the league has had on one hand. The league and clubs use it to place players wages outside the cap ( 2 )
My understanding is Roy's wages are inside the cap and Vargas's are outside the cap meaning we could still sign another player to big $$$$$ call it a marquee signing for the purposes of not going over the salary cap.
So yes technically i think we could go after Nabs just a matter of Martin Lee feeling inclined to come up with the money.
I am sure Lawrie in the past has confirmed Roy is a in the cap player.
How is the US-China trade war going and are Americans buying LED lighting?
Based on other press articles, Roy could be elsewhere next year. Do we need the marquee spot to keep him here?
In Jerkstream podcast interviews, in the same season Lawrie confirmed Roy was a marquee outside the cap as well as in the cap, he contradicted himself in the same season. So Roy could be either. Lee would want as many non-marquees as possible, it makes way more financial sense to have everyone under the cap because of how the player wages are funded with the TV deals etc.
OK
Lets see how Roy goes for the rest of the season (or at least another month or two). Prior to the injuries and suspension that ruined his last campaign, he was looking a hot tip for golden boot.
FFA just announced a new rule that if a team wins the league but fails to make the GF then they can sign a player outside the cap as long as he has been in theJ-League the previous season and has dark hair.
Looks like only one club qualifies for this exemption this year. Lucky them.
It would be criminal for us not to actively pursue him. He has said that he has a desire to come back to newy....but it will not happen, we are a lowly ranked team and I'm afraid we always will be.
Remember Nicky "will only ever play for Newcastle if I come back" Carle.
Even Griff was fed the Smurf kool aid, though he must regret it.
Would like to think Nabbout would come back to us if given a competitive offer. I think he’d take a pay cut to repay us. I don’t think hed take a significant pay cut though. If we give him a respectful offer I think he’d come back.
he should slog it out in Japan and move on to europe... A League doesnt get him anywhere apart from a cushy pay check....
Amigos Aarau
Surely with Vargas contract coming to an and if the club felt inclined it could make a" back end " offer to secure him. Happens in other codes all the time.
If both the club and Nabs really wanted to make it happen using that method they could very well do that. Comes down to if the club felt nabs is worth a comparative offer or if Nabs feels he has become to special for this club and would feel more at home at Melb City with all the wanna be show ponies who think pulling on a light blue city top in Australia somehow makes them extra extra special.
