30 with a history of ACL issues isn't a great signing... Generally history shows that even those players that bounce back from an acl do it in their early to mid 20s... Once you're cracking 30, these things tend to rear their head again and take a lot longer to heal...

Hoping I'm wrong, but knowing the jets, he'll be done by round 3 and have a nice paid vacation...

He did ok at AEK - they wanted to extend his contract but they couldn't agree on salary - so Vargas rolled the dice and became a free agent. Hopefully he is physically sound.

BERTS definetly looking to score a lot of goals with this squad - and we will need lots of goals with our poor defence.

AEK are Nathan Burns former club... he couldn't get close to the starting team and many wanted him here. You would have to think this is going to be a really good signing for Sydney FC

You do realise that he did his ACL when he was in his mid 20s?

Don't you just love how the announcement of this by the Jets is done with little fan fare

A competent club bring old mate KFC Ronaldo in and plonk him down at a press conference Monday morning and unveil him to the world as a surprise announcement and get the free publicity promotion of their game /club etc by having the media in covering it

But no our club have a Luke warm announcement on a Saturday morning via their websites

    So Jets like

Can't we just find a top quality South American or European player and get him to apply for Chinese Citizenship ?

Absolutely, and I hope he stays healthy and he'll be a quality signing.

My concern is the jets history with ACL injuries... I don't know if it's how hard we work in training, our rehab or just poor damn luck, but we seem to always get screwed over with them.

My other concern is once you crack 30, niggling injuries tend to become reoccurring injuries with higher frequency and longer recovery... Most athletes are hitting their physical peak at 27 and by the time they are 30 it's a harder slog to stay healthy and stay at the top level (not saying it's not possible).

It's an opinion, and hopefully I'm proven wrong... It's not meant to be pessimistic, but just a realistic view of the overwhelming stats across many sports when it comes to ACL injuries.

One would argue that he came back too early (6-7 mths) from his ACL surgery and then he hit his patellofemoral problems a month later and was out for an extended period (12 months total). So if he had done the standard rehab protocol he would have still come back perfectly fine at the 12 month stage.

ACL injuries are a combination of various factors. To attribute it entirely to a jets specific thing is utter dross.

Many athletes have returned to their peak following ACL injuries.
Considering he has played many games since his ACL injury would tend to tell me that he is on the lower end of the risk scale.

Do we know how he did his ACL? Contact v non-contact?

The injuries he has picked up since appeared to be minor soft tissue injuries which are part and parcel of elite sportspeople.

I miss the good old days of where a fitness test was a case of laying down in the car park while the coach backed his ute over your knee a few times to decide if you were ready to play.
Too much pseudo science shit involved in sport these days - and players / athletes in general are soft as shit now as well.

Too much reliance upon drugs / supplements in this age rather than hard work.

I can also see Nabbout being bumped to the bench, from what I gather and what I've seen his form is worse then Champness. If the first few games of the season he don't pick up, and return to the guy at the start of last season I can easily see him on the bench this season

Worse than Champness? You mean that bloke that has been scoring in just about every preseason game he's appeared in?
