Fine.

Anyone got the inside word on O'Donovan?

so our team currently looks like this

Gk - Moss
LB - Vujica
CB - Boogs/Topor
RB - Millar
CM - Kanta/Ugar
CAM - Dimi
LW - Champs
RW - Hoff
ST - Roy

Bench: Italiano, Johnny K, Ridenton, Thurgate, Sheppard

That squad needs some serious work but minus signing better wingers then hoff & champs i don't see us signing any other starting 11 quality players

You think Vujica has done enough to cement his starting spot over Jackson? You don't think Boogaard might slowly get phased out?

Let's just get Messi and Ronaldo to play wide and save cash, get an Australia striker like Scott Mac up front.

He is a liability

If Jackson or Langlois can't usurp him then they need to be culled right now and we go looking elsewhere for a partner for Topor

legit, now that Jair is gone, i only care about going to the football to watch Kanta because Kanta is the only one in that team of mongs who ever displays any sense of joy when something goes good.

I'll rather him play striker and we only score 4 goals a year as long as when each goal is scored we get to see happy Kanta.

legit, is it that hard for the rest of these miserable pricks to give it the big ones when we score?

Griff, Stu, Jobe, Tagz loved the big moments, and loved showing you all how great they are for providing the crowds with these moments.

Shameful. Too many emo kids in there. Our only hope is Joey spits some bars at the cornerflag or something.

I reckon Millar will be playing RW. Johnny K is better defensively and it's not like we play a system were fullbacks bomb on anyway.

Joey on the Left, Millar on the Right, hopefully a quality import at 10. Roy up top.

If you watch him he is much more adept going forward than defending

Georgievski and Jair would have been on reasonably good $$$, and within the salary cap, which doesn't come out of Mr. lee's pocket (please correct me if I'm wrong).

So there's potential for signing 2-3 good players, even with no marquees.

I would invest in RB, CB (phase Boogs out), CM (to give Kanta and Ugar some competition and considering Kanta is prone to injuries).

Dimi n.10, it's his chance to show he is able to lift the team now that Vargas it out of the way (finally)

Champness definitely a starter as LW

We've got 5 spots free.

Out the door went an starting attacking mid, starting winger, reserve midfielder, starting striker (who is still to re-sign), squad winger and base squad fullback and starting left back.

I reckon Roy is a good shot at being re- signed.

Ronny was outside the cap and I don't suspect that will happen again. That turns a starting spot into two bench equivalent spots.

I reckon we have space for 1 starter wages, three bench equivalents and another base contract

I'd sign a starter winger, bench winger, bench attacking mid, bench striker and base left back

He doesn't seem to have developed as expected. He was up against some very good strikers at Perth but still managed a few appearances. At the Jets he's been pretty much anonymous and never even came into calculations when Roy was out and we needed a striker.

If we need to keep him here to please Dimi then the solution is easy - sack them both.

Any player that puts family above football is simply not going to have what it takes to get the job done.

A-League | Newcastle Jets set to bolster their squad with value-for-money imports
ROBERT DILLON
Local Sport

ORGANISED: Jets coach Ernie Merrick is well advanced with his plans for next season. Picture: Max Mason-Hubers

NEWCASTLE Jets are likely kick off next season with two vacant positions on their squad, allowing coach Ernie Merrick to keep his options open.

A-League clubs are permitted to sign rosters of up to 23 players, but Merrick said he would be content to start the 2019-20 campaign with 21, preferring quality rather than quantity.
"There's two reasons," Merrick told the Newcastle Herald. "One is the transfer window in January.

"It's always good to have a player to come in then.
"The other is you never know if there is another youngster that is going to come through, whether we've got them now in the academy or the youth team, or whether we're going to discover another young NPL player."
After missing out on the finals this season, Newcastle parted company with marquee midfielder Ronny Vargas and fellow South American Jair, along with proven first-teams Daniel Georgievski and Nick Cowburn, as well as fringe players Kwabena Appiah and Jake Adelson to be released.
The future of Irish target man Roy O'Donovan, the club's top scorer over the past two seasons, remains unclear.
The Jets have made O'Donovan an offer to stay and Merrick said they were still awaiting a decision.
READ MORE: Newcastle Jets news
The coach felt Newcastle already had the makings of a "very competitive squad" that he would look to supplement with another striker, either a foreign import or an Australian.
"We're in the hunt for a striker ... I'd be looking for someone preferably who's between 25 and 30, who's got a little bit of experience and is very technical and clever on the ball and quick," he said. "Then they can either central, or wide."
Merrick joked that "every team in the world" was looking for players with such attributes but was confident he could spot a diamond in the rough.
He signed little-known South Americans Fred and Carlos Hernandez during his time at Melbourne Victory, and recruited Roy Krishna and Sarpreet Singh for Wellington Phoenix before either had made their A-League debuts.
During his National Soccer League days with Sunshine George Cross, he signed a young right back from South Melbourne named Damian Mori and converted him into a striker.
Mori proceeded to become the most prolific goalscorer in NSL history.
"It just shows that if they've got the right capacities - they're brave and they're quick and they're coachable - it's amazing what you can find," he said.
"You never know where the players are going to come from.
"Just don't restrict yourself. They don't have to be overseas players."
Merrick was confident youngsters Joey Champness, Angus Thurgate and Lachlan Jackson could step up to become first-team regulars next season.

The Jets will start their off-season break on Friday week and return on July 1.

In the article itself it mentions James as a scholarship player, which makes sense as he would be second reserve keeper. Article also leaves it open as to whether Roy is staying by not mentioning him at all...

Ernie Merrick’s squad ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season is starting to take shape, with much of the past season’s side sticking together.
In total, Newcastle have 19 players contracted for next season with 18 of those signed to full contracts.
With Matt Ridenton currently the only visa player locked in, it means that Merrick has the option of having four more internationals jet in.
The experienced trio at the heart of defence will look to go another year with Glen Moss, Nigel Boogaard, and Nikolai Topor-Stanley back on board for 2019/20.

Looking to earn their stripes this season will be Noah James and Jack Simmons, both on scholarship contracts.
They’ll want to follow the path blazed by Angus Thurgate and Pat Langlois who signed full contracts after impressing as scholarship players.
Matt Millar is the only signing at this early stage, with the Central Coast Mariners man set to link up with the Club for the first day of pre-season.

So I've been hearing talk of Mr Lee wanting to cut all extra funds from the Jets. I.e. Marquees. I even heard that Ernie was going to be sacked but the club can't afford to pay him out.

If true, we would more than likely not have a marquee and won't be using salary cap concessions next season. Which isn't suprising at all.

That would bring Kanta back under the cap and take all the Vargas money out of he equation. This also explains why Roy hasn't resigned yet, we are obviously offering everyone peanuts.

We are going to be fighting with Scum, Adelaide and Brisbane for talent. We are so getting Rashid Mahazi and Andrew Hoole.

This is from "The Australian" today.

Concerns have been raised over Newcastle Jets owner Martin Lee’s continued involvement with the club amid suggestions he is considering selling if the right offer comes along.

The Weekend Australian has been told the Chinese billionaire could be looking to get out unless he can find an investor or two to help carry the financial burden of running the A-League club.

At the very least, it has been revealed the Jets will have to considerably tighten the belt next season, as Lee has ordered cuts in the budget for players and staff.

This comes on top of the club’s disappointing season in which they failed to make the playoffs, after finishing runners-up following the controversial loss to Melbourne Victory in the grand final 12 months ago.

While confirming there are some issues, Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna looked to allay fears regarding the situation at the club when contacted by The Weekend Australian yesterday.

McKinna said he spent several days with Lee in China last week sorting out plans for next season.

“He did want to sell the club 100 per cent lock, stock and barrel about nine months ago and there were a couple of interested parties,” McKinna said. “But nothing came of it. Martin’s preference now is that he wants to keep the club, but have a shareholder involved to help take some of the financial load.

“But he would look at selling if someone wants to buy 51 per cent or even 100 per cent … he would definitely look at that.”

With the help of McKinna, Lee took over the club in June 2016, just before the start of the 2016-17 A-League season. He shelled out $5.5 million for the licence from Football Federation Australia, which had taken control after previous owner Nathan Tinkler struck financial problems.

Lee reportedly lost $3m in the first season and was subsequently hit in the final quarter of last year when his company, the Ledman Group, was seriously affected by Donald Trump’s aggressive trade war with China.

The Chinese LED lighting industry was slapped with a 25 per cent US tariff in an effort to reduce the trade imbalance between the US and China. As a consequence, Lee’s LED lighting fortune was cut in half in only five months.

However, the Ledman Group share price is up 35 per cent since January 1 but it is still worth half of what it was a year ago. It appears the company’s profits fell in the quarter after the Trump tariffs were announced.

McKinna said Lee’s company had ridden the storm because it has “now invested a lot of money in new technology that is selling very well”.

McKinna, who has done a wonderful job steering the Jets back as a force in Australian soccer, said the club’s budget for next season has yet to be set but confirmed there will be some unavoidable cuts: “We will be cutting the budget a bit but the amount has not yet been finalised.

“That is why I was in China last week. There is still a bit to do and we are waiting for confirmation from China.

“The cuts will be to bits and pieces, player and staff budgets.”

Just how the cuts will affect the club’s recruitment of players for next season remains to be seen. The Jets spent about $4m on playing staff last season.

What we do know is that Newcastle won’t be looking to sign a marquee player for next season.

“When you include the marquee, we spent a fair bit over the salary cap last season as we did the previous season,” McKinna said.

The Jets released six players last week, including marquee Ronny Vargas and Brazilian import Jair, and that will free up some money for McKinna and coach Ernie Merrick to work with.

They are still negotiating with class striker Roy O’Donovan, who is looking for a new two-year deal.

Red Bull Newcastle anyone?

Oddly enough when i was having a discussion with my young bloke about the alleged money behind the Canberra bid and how they were so disappointed by FFA's decision not to grant them a start that they would not wait around for FFA to get there shit together and afford them another opportunity to bid and would move on.

I recall at the time the investor did not wish to be named but had in interests in a few other clubs around the world ( in actual fact it was mentioned they were just as cashed up as the city group ) and would quickly move on to put that money toward another acquisition as soon as practical. I said to my young bloke it could be Dietrich Mateschitz and his company Red Bull.

If and that is a big if it wouldn't take much of a salesperson to sell the potential in the Jets and Newcastle over a ACT start up.

My theory now is that he is setting us up for sale. Cut the wage bill to a minimum (incl staff), put some players on long term contracts (i.e lock in assets) and then offer us up as a clean slate to build with.

We better hope the top 4 spend big on marquees and they leave some decent players available who are pushed out by marquees. (So then we can buy the mediocre players who are pushed out by the players pushed out by the marquees)

It'd be no surprise Roy is in demand. The league isn't exactly flushed with strikers who are available at the moment and there are quite a few teams who need one!

He's tested the market and I reckon he's got a better offer and has decided to leave more-so than the Jets withdrawing the offer. I bet he's announced by the Roar today.

Not a great look by the club with the statement. Wish him all the best but don't act petty by saying "he missed 12 games suspended" ahead of not even mentioning the goal record he had here.

Not sure I understand all the weeping over Roy leaving? He was a good servant to the club but regardless of goals scored this year I don't think he is the same player we had at the start of the 17/18 Season. He's slowed down and and misses a butt load of easy chances that he should be burying. It wasn't too long ago he was being lambasted everywhere for 2 penalty misses in a row potentially costing us our season!

I'd personally love to see Sheppard given a chance to lead the line and potentially players like Maki or Kosta Petratos given a chance with some game time.

Really? Ray of hope? Where is he hiding it?

I counter argue that absolutely nothing has changed at all from 5/6 years ago. The club still has no identify, we have no plans, we have no stability, we don't have prospects to improve greatly in the near future. We pick up whatever is available and just hope it works. Ernie included especially. Our search criteria was "available" and "not expensive".

yeah look we are garbage again, after finding lightning in a bottle last year and selling key parts of it before the finals.
more accessible? our players have generally been ok the whole time, but i dont think any of it is because of the CEO. 2 min after the final whistle in the last home game of the year 1/2 the team went to the sheds. a few legends like Dimi, Georgevski (in a suit), Thurgate, Joey hung around to talk to the fans/kiddies. No sign of our captain, no sign of our CEO.
He is untrustworthy, and cant lie straight in bed. He's 'well liked' because he has good relationships with the media (see also: Nelmes. Nuatail,). They tell HIS stories, HIS way. You only have to go back to the kit release fiasco last year to see how he handles a meaningless 'crisis'.

Losing Georgie, Roy, Jair, Cowburn, Kwabs & Adelson from the cap would be far more value than 500k spare. Georgie and Roy alone would have cost us more than that value - by Lawrie's own words, Roy was on "near-marquee wages" and the reports say we even offered him more than he was currently on for next year.

To replace a starting wide back, starting striker, and an attempt at a starting winger/striker.. and then 3 squad players.. and note we have 4x visa spots available.. we're going to need more than 500k. What is minimum salary, 60k? The three squad players take up at least 180k of that 500. So we have 320k for a starting striker, starting wide back, and fringe winger/striker. That is 107k per starting player on average available. It is not enough.

EDIT: I have just remembered Millar is already signed. He would be Georgie's replacement. So we have 320k spare for a starting striker and fringe winger/striker, which is 160k each. It is still not enough.

On the back of today's article, and other articles from the last month, I expect next season will be one of transition.

Angus Thurgate, Champness and Jackson were all called out today as players who will look to cement their players.

Joey is already a starter, for me. I see Jackson coming in for Boogaard as a very obvious choice - he's waited and this is his season. Thurgate....depends how we set up next year where he fits.

If the offer is right, I see us doing that. I don't necessarily think that money will be reinvested - instead it will be banked.

Expectations won't be high for the next season - they'll be tempered and framed as one where we are rebuilding. It will be about balancing the books as a way to make investment attractive as well.

Hes no different to Miller, gypo Arnold, and Trump. They all read from the same book (or in ones case, claimed they wrote it).

Funny stuff guys.

Have you guys ever considered putting a ShoutBox on this website? It's great to converse in there during live games as I used it on another vBulletin forum.

Impressively busy this place is.

I have no idea who Stajic is looking at to be honest. All I know is our best player from this season is now at Newcastle all because of an idiotic board related ballsup. As far as I'm aware 2 directors were sacked over the whole ordeal.

They knew they wanted to keep Millar there in November and had from December through January to organise a new deal. He was going to be one of the best players at the club in a long time, and the club was reportedly going to table a "great offer" in the coming weeks.

Yeah. Bullshit.

They dragged it on for ages and ages, and then they were shocked when he accepted Newcastle's offer. Then they made poor Mike Mulvey cover everything up and put the blame on him. No wonder he went to Newcastle; the club was a mess.

Mulvey also stated that he would "find players of the same calibre in the NSL next season." Funny how on Mario Shabow's Instagram he stated that Millar, should he put his head to it, could be one of the best Australian footballers of his generation. But there's more like him in the state leagues.

My name is Jacob. I'm from a portaloo in Gosford but now live in a drain somewhere 4 hours down the coast. I love to moan about the Mariners. Thanks for the welcome.

The Mariners need;

experienced defenders
a captian that isn't an asshat
a striker
a keeper

Seal those things, resign Hiareaj and Karacan and the side has potential.

I don't know who these people are, but I'm sure this is the wrong thread. Maybe you are looking for the NPL thread, which will be somewhere in local football.

You can talk all about pitch surfaces, player payments, who has or hasn't got liquor licences, footballs that get punted over the fence and lost in the bush probably intentionally but can't be confirmed and someone will not be happy about it, but we will all chuckle about it now....

You know important stuff like whatever you just said.

We have had aggression and C#@t the last 2 seasons and all it did was give the FFA an excuse to **** us out of a grand final win and finals football this season. Football is better played with talent and that bloke lacks it.

I think 2 is right. I don't think one will be Chinese.

I say this because we aren't in the ACL, Ledman no longer own a team in China so why use this as a pathway and it's been well documented the disparity between mediocre Chinese players wages and top earners in our league (meaning those we can afford are of little improvement than what we already have).

Asian player - yes I think we can find some value, but I recall we will go to leagues covered by Wyscout and there is decent footage to analyse.

Hmmmmm.....just like most of Arnie's squad tonight.

At 31? Naaahhhhh

(He's nailed on to come then)

We do need a striker and a wide player.

From the Herald:

With marquee midfielder Ronny Vargas departing, Petratos is most likely to be installed as the chief play-maker, a role which McKinna believes he will relish.

"With Vargas going, Dimi will be the No.10," McKinna said. "He will have that spot and he can work on that rather than floating out wide. Deep down, I think that is where he wants to play."

The Jets assemble for pre-season training on July 1.

McKinna confirmed the club was in talks with an overseas striker and he was hopeful of signing another wide player.

We're in talks... and we're hopeful. :whistling:

so is it Riera, Bonevacia, or some other AL cast-off, cos I thought we weren't spending last time Lawrie mentioned replacement (read recycled) players? (we can claim carbon offsets for them as far as I can tell...) - can Hoole fit Lawrie's wide player remit??

We've lost Roy, Georgievski and Jair: I'd think we have a fair bit of $$$ under the cap for a couple of good players.
Do we?

FFS make a good offer to Nabbout!!! (dreaming)

What are everyone's thoughts on Joel chianese?

Imo quite a good campaign for Perth but they will be stacked up front/wide next season. He is yet to re-sign I believe

I think you will find he done a deal mid season. Always been a fan right back to his days as a smurf as the bloke can get shots away with both feet.

I've heard we're looking at him, maybe signed him. Decent addition imo.

No world beater but works hard & can put a decent ball in. Was leading the Johnny Warren medal for a large part a couple of years ago wasn't he? Seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth but.

Are you Lawrie trying to gauge the response if we sign yet another ex-gypo?

Fitzgerald has ability but like so many littered throughout this league they are only good for one good game a month. Just another HAL journeyman on the back of not being consistent enough to be a first 11 starter week in week out.

No thanks.

ROFL. I reckon I've got about 2 more Gypos at this place before I'm out. I didn't even realise we had enough caravan parks to house the ones we've got, let alone a new family of 12 that this bloke probably has.

Very underwhelming signing. FMD this cut price approach this season is going to be hard too watch. Can see the whole vibe of the club going down the same shit path it did under Stubbins.

Please fold the club. Not interested in simply making up the numbers. We are either in it to win it or not at all.

The Jets have thrown the towel before the season has started.

Alls I’m thinking is we must have a chunk of cap space left. And surely Mr Lee can’t skimp on the cap.
Unless we are paying overs to a lot of players.

Some creativity on the wings and a clinical striker would be a good next step.

Mate, the lineup for the ice cream truck is going to so small this year I'm actually excited. All we need now is David Williams up top and we'll be set.

A few interesting points out of today's Herald article featuring comments from lord griff:
- Griff compares Fitzgerald to Appiah and Austin and says he is a definite upgrade on them. I agree
- striker we are in talks with is from CENTRAL America.
- Ivan wants out and article mentions johnny taking over left back role. FMD we need a proper left back. I have heard we are trialling Tom Doyle from the nix at some point 🤯, another visa wasted on a kiwi possibly

Fans are gonna be so happy when Lachie Jackson is getting skinned at LB all year and Vujica is killing it with WSW or Victory. Ernie can't work out how to play a LB at LB but thinks he can make a Gypo bench warmer into a competent footballer.

Fold the club already. Just cancel the football but keep the bars and ice cream vans open. We can all sit around in Jets shaped hats and actually enjoy ourselves for once.

Roundball Enthusiast
19-06-2019, 01:08 PM
Ivan is fundamentally too slow to play the style we (Ernie) want to play.

You need someone who can box to box as a LB/RB, to overlap and get back. He gets burned by fast wingers too often.
