New coach Arthur Papas vows to make the Newcastle Jets the A-League's fittest team
ROBERT DILLON
NEW coach Arthur Papas has vowed to transform the Newcastle Jets into a team who win games through sheer hard work.
While hopes are high that a recent spending spree will add a touch of quality and class to Newcastle's roster, Papas believes the real key to success will be hours of toil on the training pitch and in the gym.
"The first area that I always address is our work ethic, to be honest with you," Papas told the Newcastle Herald.
"We've started [pre-season] early for a reason, because we need to ingrain a certain working culture into the organisation in terms of the way we approach our football and the mentality we have.
"The first thing is we need to be the hardest-working team in the league.
"That's a non-negotiable.
"That's something we're working on already, because to play the type of football that I like to play, you need to be hard-working.
"You need to be extremely mobile, you need to be extremely aggressive and the intensity is never compromised. It's all about dominating the game and dominating as high as possible, and scoring goals."
Papas said Newcastle's first few days of training had been "very positive", although he suspected the intensity of the sessions may have been an eye-opener for his new troops.
"There's no handbrake in anything we do," he said.
"We've trained three sessions now, and at the end of today's session, I said to the players: 'That's probably the easiest three days you'll have all year'. I think they were a bit astounded by that.
"But when you want to be champions, you need to train at the top intensity every single day. We won't take our foot off the pedal."
Papas said every player "has a clean slate from day one" and all positions were up for grabs.
Newcastle's first competitive opponents will be Western United in the FFA Cup qualifying round, on the weekend of August 7-8.
The Jets have traditionally struggled in the FFA Cup but Papas left no doubt what it means to him.
"It's an opportunity to compete," Papas said.
"It's an opportunity to win something, and that's important, because you want to be successful and win things.
"With the Australian calendar, there is basically the FFA Cup and the league. Most countries have three or four competitions.
"So anything we're entered into, our aim will be to be successful and win it."
Several new signings - including New Zealand Olywhites representatives Joey Champness and Dane Ingham and Georgian striker Beka Mikeltadze - are still several weeks from arriving in Newcastle.
In addition, defender James Donachie, who was loaned out to play in India last season, is not on deck and is expected to negotiate a release.
Donachie's situation appears unlikely to leave a door ajar for veteran Nikolai Topor-Stanley, who is weighing whether to retire or find another club, at the age of 36.

Cleanout continues as Newcastle Jets part company with a club legend
THE exodus at the Newcastle Jets has continued after football-operations manager Joel Griffiths was shown the door and and three more players were released.
The Jets confirmed on Friday the mutual termination of the contracts of Johnny Koutroumbis, James Donachie and Connor O'Toole.
New Jets coach Arthur Papas is intent on kicking off his tenure with a revamped roster and Koutroumbis, O'Toole and Donachie will follow former skipper Nigel Boogaard, Roy O'Donovan, Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Matthew Millar, Lachlan Jackson, Lewis Italiano, Ramy Najjarine, Luke Prso and Liridon Krasniqi out the back door.
Koutroumbis, 23, has been a regular since joining the Jets in 2016, playing in 90 A-League games, including the 2017-18 grand final.
He signed a three-year contract with Newcastle that was supposed to take him through until the end of the coming season. Instead it is understood he sought a release and is expected to join Western Sydney.
O'Toole, 24, was under contract for even longer, having signed a new two-year deal with Newcastle just four months ago.
Donachie signed a two-season with the Jets more than 12 months ago but has never actually pulled on a Newcastle jersey.
He was initially loaned out to Indian Super League club Goa, but since completing that stint indicated a reluctance to honour his deal with the Jets.
Within hours of Newcastle confirming his release, Sydney FC announced they had signed Donachie.
In addition, new recruit Cameron Devlin has attracted interest in Europe and might not be joining Newcastle.
Griffiths, the crowd-pleasing hero of Newcastle's 2007-08 championship-winning season, joined the club's administration ranks under former owner Martin Lee.
Along with chief executive Lawrie McKinna, who also parted company with the Jets recently, Griffiths was largely responsible for recruitment and helped assemble the club's 2017-18 squad that finished runners-up in the grand final.
It is understood he was bitterly disappointed when the club advised him this week that his contract would not be renewed.
"Joel has been a really valued, respected member of our staff for a long time and he will always be a legend of the club," Jets executive chairman Shane Mattiske said.
"But the fact of the matter is we needed to make changes, off the field as well as on it. We'll continue to support Joel and wish him well in his future endeavours."
While Griffiths was surplus to requirements, a new general-manager-of-football position has been created for Craig Deans, who stood down after a season as Newcastle's head coach.
Deans will be overseeing Newcastle's W-League team and academy as well as the A-League outfit.
Meanwhile, A-League expansion club Western United have signed John Aloisi as coach.

All I see is selfless sacrifice from griff. He knew that the team needed Deans to go but also knew that the club couldn't keep both him and deans, so he sacrificed himself. Much like he lets bridge take the credit for the grand final goal.
Griff knows what he's doing.

Pretty obvious the new ownership consortium wanted Lawrie and Joel gone so they make the big calls themselves.
Lawrie and Joel would have had a strong connection with some of the players Papas wanted gone. I'm sure if those guys were still running the club then some would have been retained.
Definitely a big clean out, Papas learned his craft under Ange. When Ange first went to Brisbane he cleaned out a few of the older senior players.
Deans will be overseeing Newcastle's W-League team and academy as well as the A-League outfit
Well that puts us in the bin and into the new 2nd division. Deans over Griffo? thatll do me.

The Cynic in me thinks this was purely a money decision, They needed to find a gig for Deans given he still had 12months remaining whilst Joel was prob a 4 week notice termination at the most.

I’ve seen a few bad headclashes where I’m sure somebody has a concussion but continues to play.
I still remember being 12 years old, and our coach deemed us too scared to head the ball. So put up bombs for 20 minutes and made us head them.
In hindsight with what we know now, it seems a bit silly.

Thats not good but at the time none really knew any better. need to practice heading with softer balls and ban heading from GK kicks to start with.
The more head impact we can reduce the better. I dont usually take the soft route in sport but this is turning into something like smoking where its disaster for our health.

A-League: Defender senses more than a hint of Ange Postecoglou in Jets boss Arthur Papas
James Gardiner
RECENTLY-arrived Jets enforcer Matt Jurman won an A-League championship at Brisbane Roar and made eight appearances for the Socceroos under Ange Postecoglou.
"That was a good time in my career when I was playing under Ange," Jurman said.
And when Newcastle coach Arthur Papas rang the defender asking if he would be interested in being part of the Jets rebuild, Jurman could sense more than a hint of Postecoglou in the pitch.
Papas was Postecoglou's right-hand man at Yokohama F Marinos when they were crowned J-League champions in 2019 - ending a 15-year drought.
"Just talking to Arthur on the phone when I was overseas I could feel that [Postecoglou influence]," Jurman said. "He told me about the brand of football he wanted to play. I was excited and wanted to be a part of it.
"There is a lot of hard work to come. We only started a couple of weeks ago. It is nowhere near where we want to be. It is something to build on."
As well as winning a championship at Brisbane, Jurman was part of the Sydney squad which won the premiership-championship double in 2009-10.
"Those teams were pretty exciting to play in," Jurman said. "I was lucky to play alongside some great players. Hopefully we can do something similar here. It is a good style that the coach wants to play. Once all the boys have arrived, I think we can start to gel and play some good football. After that, the results come."
More recently, Jurman, 31, has spent time in South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Greece, where he was part of a Xanthi outfit which fell just short of promotion to the Super League 1.
And he intends to use that experience to help what is shaping as a youthful Jets outfit.
"There are some good young boys in the team and there is a lot of potential there," he said.
Papas said Jurman had already had a "positive impact" despite only joining the group a week ago.
"In the dressing room, first of all," Papas said. "Just the type of person he is. On the park, you can see the quality and character he brings."
Jurman's likely partner in the centre of defence, Jordan Elsey started training this week after arriving from Adelaide
Papua New Guinean international Tommy Semmy is on a training contract, while Papas confirmed that he has agreed to terms with two foreigners but won't reveal their identity until visas have been issued.
"We are hopeful of getting that completed this week," Papas said. "There a couple more on top of those that we are working through."
Papas said he was likely to go with a squad of 24 or 25 players, including scholarship-holders Archie Goodwin and Blake Archbold.
Meanwhile, Apostolos Stamatelopulos, who was training with the Jets, has signed with Greek second tier club Rodos.

Striker Beka Mikeltadze issued visa as Jets granted exemption to train
James Gardiner
Newcastle Jets' hired gun Beka Mikeltadze is a step closer to joining his new teammates after the Georgian international had a visa approved to travel to Australia.
Now all the club has to do is organise a flight - not an easy task given the border restrictions due to COVID-19.
Mileltadze signed a two-year deal with the Jets a month ago. He has since been following a training program, and Jets executive chairman Shane Mattiske confirmed that the striker's arrival was imminent, pending medical results.
"His visa is in the tray," Mattiske said. "He is not yet on a flight but we are trying to get him on one."
Mikeltadze has represented Georgia at every youth level and has two senior caps. The 23-year-old was last with Greek club Xanthi, where he was teammates with Jets defender Matt Jurman. Jets assistant coach Arthur Diles had the same role at Xanthi.
He is one of three senior strikers on the roster, which also includes scholarship players Archie Goodwin and Blake Archibold
Former Socceroo Eli Babalj and Papua New Guinean international Tommy Semmy are training with the club.
COVID restrictions have limited the number of flights permitted to Australia but Mattiske was hopeful that Mikeltadze would soon touch down in Sydney, where he will quarantine for 14 days.
The Jets have also agreed to terms with two other foreign attackers but are awaiting visas to be issued before announcing their signatures.
The squad is in the fourth week of pre-season. The NSW Health Department has granted the players exemptions to train as a group but they must adhere to strict protocols.
"It is a critical part of our preparation for the season," Mattiske said. "The players arrive right before the session and leave immediately after it. They are required to wear masks when they are not on the field. On the pitch, they train as normal."
However, trial matches are "an impossibility" and there is growing uncertainty about the FFA Cup proceeding.
"Our ability to play the FFA Cup is now in question," Mattiske said. "The qualifier against Western United was meant to be on August 14, then they gave us a later August date. Now it has been suggested that it will push into September.
"We have to get to Melbourne to play that game. If we win, we have to play Wellington. In the round of 16, you have teams from around the country trying to cross over and play. There are some headaches in terms of how that is going to work out.
"Trial matches are an impossibility at the moment. Typically we play Brisbane but we can't cross the border. We can't plan for that.
"There is still time to do those things but we are now starting to think about contingency plans."
The A-League is scheduled to kick off on October 30.

The more you read the more confidence for the new season you get
Defender Jordan Elsey drawn by coach's vision for Jets
James Gardiner
JORDAN Elsey has only ever known Adelaide football.
A product of the Para Hills Knights, Elsey made his A-League debut for Adelaide United as a teenager in 2014 and went on to feature in 124 games for his home-town club, winning a championship in 2015-16 and three FFA Cup titles.
Keen to get out if his "comfort zone", Elsey was looking at going overseas until he spoke with new Jets coach Arthur Papas.
"I thought the time was right to make the move and challenge myself," the 27-year-old defender said. "Get out of my comfort zone a little bit. I have been in Adelaide my whole life.
"I had a chat with Arthur and was very attracted by what he is building here."
Papas sold a similar vision to Socceroo Matt Jurman and a host of other key building blocks in his renovation of the Jets.
"It is something I have not had from a coach before," Elsey said. "He was so interested in where I want to take my career and [was firm on] where he wanted to take the team as a whole.
"Obviously, I can't talk too much about tactics but it is a really exciting brand of football and will put bums on seats at the stadium, I can assure you of that."
As well as exciting football, Elsey is confident it will be winning football.
"I didn't come here to lose," he said. "It will be fun to live in Newcastle for a couple of years but I came here to win things.
"With what Arthur and the coaching staff are building I believe we can do that. I am really driven and, at this point in my career, I want to push forward. This year is very important for me."
Elsey touched down in Newcastle last week, fresh from his marriage to long-term partner Megan, who will arrive in the near future.
"Arthur and the coaching staff wanted me here as quick as possible and I wanted to get to work too," Elsey said. "My wife is a nurse, already has a job here and will be arriving soon."
On the pitch, Elsey has started forming connections, especially with fellow defender and major signing Matt Jurman.
"Like any time when two new players come to a club they holler to each other," Elsey said. "Matty is so experienced and has played at a high level. I'm looking forward to learning from him.
"All the boys and coaching staff have been welcoming. It has been a very easy transition so far.
"I spent time with Jordan O 'Doherty in Adelaide and I know Valentino Yuel. With the other boys, already it feels like I have known them for a year."
The successful teams that Elsey has been a part of previously have been close groups.
"Everyone has to be on the same wave length as the coach in what we want to achieve and what we want to do with our football," he said. "The other one for me is the camaraderie in the change rooms. Success off the pitch means success on the pitch."
Meanwhile, the Jets have parted ways with head of high performance Karl Dodd. Dodd joined the Jets in May as an assistant to then head coach Craig Deans.

A-League: Jets coach Arthur Papas hopes to strike it rich with front-third recruits
James Gardiner
SAMMY Silvera touches down in Australia on Monday. Beka Mikeltadze is in his sixth day of quarantine. Olivier Boumal is expected to get on a flight within the next week. Daniel Penha is awaiting a visa to be processed and he too will be in transit.
The quartet have been charged with transforming a spluttering Jets attack which yielded a league worst 25 goal into a premiership force.
In a major overhaul, Roy O'Donovan, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Ali Abbas were shipped out.
The new faces add to Valentino Yuel, Kosta Petratos, who played 331 minutes in 11 appearances last season, and scholarship players Archie Goodwin and Blake Archbold.
Although admitting there are "no guarantees" coach Arthur Papas believes the recruits have the ingredients to supercharge the Jets.
Boumal (Georgia), Mikeltadze (Greece), Penha (Brazil) and Silvera (Portugal) have taken different flight paths to Newcastle.
Boumal is by far the most accomplished of the group, having played for Cameroon at the Africa Nations Cup (2019) and in the top flight in Greece, China and Japan.
In Japan, he played under former Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou at Yokohama F. Marinos, the season before Papas joined the club as an assistant.
"Olivier is a good player who has been in a system that has similarities to some of the things we are looking to develop in our team," Papas said. "That is obviously a positive.
"It is important that he gets here soon. It is always a new challenge when you bring a new player in. There are no guarantees with anything. I am quite optimistic that if he can integrate well into the team, he will be good.
"He has played for Panathinaikos, which is one of the biggest clubs in Greece and Europe, was involved in a massive transfer fee to go to China and has played in the J-League. His pedigree is not in question.
"Most importantly, he is passionate and desperate to come here. He has been messaging me every day. He is waiting to finish one of the medicals and hopefully we get him on a plane within the next week."
Papas has been tracking Penha for almost a year and first flagged the Brazilian when the coach was at his last club in Japan.
"He has come through a great system in Brazil - Atletico Mineiro," Papas said. "He has been loaned out but that is common practice in Brazil. They loan out 50 players a year. That shows you how big a club they are and what their youth system is like.
"The last eight months, he has progressed a lot. He got loaned out to Confianca in Serie B and played every minute of football for the past six months, 18 games.
"He is very versatile across the front third, is great on set pieces and likes to shoot. He has won the ball back in the front third, the third the most in the league. That is important. His numbers, physically, are some of the highest in his team in terms of distance, sprints and high-speed running.
"We are getting a very mobile, attacking player."
Mikeltadze, 23, arrived in Sydney on Thursday and has been following a training program in quarantine. A Georgian international, he played for Xanthi in the Greek second division last season.
"He has a spin bike and strength equipment in his quarantine hotel room," Papas said. "The good thing is that he has worked with [Jets assistant] Arthur Diles before, he has played with [Jets defender] Matty Jurman before. I'm confident that we have a very good player."
Silvera, 20, has been playing in the second division in Portugal after a move from the Mariners to Primeira Liga club Pacos de Ferreira.
"He came out of the blocks here and made a move to a very good club," Papas said. "It has been difficult in terms of game time. I have watched a lot of games that he has played and had a good conversation with him. He has so much to offer and there are a lot of things he has to work on. He should come back with a point to prove but also a little more polish."

Honestly, articles like that are really filling me with a lot of hope about these signings. It all sounds less like shit players and managers typically say to the media and more like a coach who really thought through his recruitment and not just signing players because you need to hit a certain number.

A-League: Defender Jordan Elsey forming strong connection and learning breakfast habits at Jets
JETS defender Jordan Elsey jokes that he knows what Matt Jurman has for breakfast.
The COVID lockdown has made life difficult in many respects.
But for a Jets team boasting 14 new players, the extra time together has proved invaluable.
"It is a good opportunity for us to all get acquainted with each other," said Elsey, who joined the Jets from his home-town club Adelaide.
"We don't really have a choice. There is not much else to do outside of training right now. It is a lot easier to get to understand your teammates if you are spending long hours with them.
"We are playing internal games at the moment which is also a positive. The intensity is far higher than playing against an NPL team or things like that.
"Everyone is on the same wavelength and we are working hard towards success."
A strong understanding is crucial for a central defensive partnership.
Elsey and Jurman have had three months to "connect".
"When you spend so many hours around someone, you get to know what they eat for breakfast," Elsey said. "Not only how they play but what they do outside of football, which is good for me and Matty.
"We have connected well. I knew Matty having watched him in the Socceroos and watching him in the A-League.
"We both know what we are about. We are both hard defenders who are willing to put our body on the line to win. We have a great connection and I'm looking forward to testing that in round one."
And with the aggressive, attacking style coach Arthur Papas plans to employ, Elsey and Jurman will need to be "switched on".
"When Arthur first contacted me he explained his style of play - attacking, aggressive, exciting," Elsey said.
"Everyone remembers the Brisbane side that in the A-League went unbeaten for a lot of games. It a similar style to that - keeping the ball, touch passing, moving and aggressive football.
"At the end of the day, we want to play exciting football for the Newcastle fans and score goals. It's my job to be switched on and make sure the other team doesn't score goals.
"The way we play, Matty and I have to be switched on for every second of the game."
The rigorous pre-season has been engineered with that in mind.
"We are training like we are in the season," Elsey said. "Since day one, it has been the same. We are getting the best out of each other.
"Not so much isolated running, but the hours on the track and each drill - how intense they are and how much Arthur and the coaching staff want from us.
"It is intense and you have to be on your A-game but I am enjoying it so far.
"The players we have, we have a lot of winners in the side. You can see that at training. It reminds me of the Adelaide side I was involved in when we won the premiership. We were all winners and we were all fighting for the same goal. I'm really looking forward to round one and seeing where we are at."

I don't see how that's Burns' fault that far up the pitch. Sh!t pass form #5 in the first place.
Credit to old mate for tracking back for his stuff up. Bobby probably looks at him and the other 4 defenders and thinks "they'll bust it up". Nope...

Be very, very careful what you wish for - as someone actively involved in trade with two of these regions, this would create economic havoc due to lack of supply for starters.
The Jets major sponsor is half owned by China, there are many similar deals in Australia.

If we don't deal with China where else are we going to buy throw away shit we don't really need.
Most of us have more money and possessions than we need anyway - might do us some good to simplify our lives a bit.
it might also ease the burden on those less fortunate trying to keep up with all the marketing hype / bullshit.
If Australian business don't want to invest in teams and foreign ones do then it's really not an issue.
If the government have concerns, then there's nothing stopping them from offering financial support to clubs.

I agree, it was just a sponsor giving a shirt, feel like that happens at any club to anybody of note.
The caption that alludes to us gaining a new fan, implying some sort of relationship between the two parties, when the clubs main supporter group is labour supporting. Don’t think that was the smartest play.
To many, it seems the club is trying to advertise the fact that scomo is our biggest fan. Politics and sport don’t often go hand in hand.

Van Egmond joins Robinson at Wanderers
Let the comments begin. Rivalry just gets better
Gary van Egmond links with Carl Robinson at Western Sydney Wanderers
EMBATTLED Carl Robinson has turned to another former Newcastle Jets coach, Gary van Egmond, to help salvage Western Sydney's season.
Speculation has been mounting that Robinson, who quit the Jets before the start of last season to accept a three-year deal with Wanderers, was facing the sack after a lacklustre start to this campaign.
After failing to qualify for the finals last season, Western Sydney have won only one of their first five games and much of the blame has been directed at Robinson, a former Welsh international who played in the English Premier League.
Instead of sacking Robinson - the outcome many were predicting - Wanderers instead hired van Egmond as his assistant coach for the rest of the season.
The 56-year-old former Socceroo steered Newcastle to their only A-League title, in 2007-08, and has since worked with national youth teams and the Matildas.
"Gary has spent over two decades coaching in Australia and brings experience, knowledge, and an unrivalled understanding of the domestic football landscape," Robinson said in a statement.
"Gary is set to play an integral role in our coaching team to not only guide but inspire our next generation of players coming through the Wanderers Academy into the first team, alongside our Wanderers Academy technical director, Ian Crook.
"We are all looking forward to working closely with Gary throughout the season."

A-League rules out extending season, announces criteria for COVID postponements
Dominic Bossi 6 hrs ago
A-League clubs with five or more positive COVID-19 cases will be allowed to postpone games, as the competition grapples with the outbreak wreaking havoc on the season's schedule.
Nine games have been postponed in recent weeks due to either the number of cases in a team or travel plans being affected by the Omicron outbreak. At least two other games are already in doubt with more almost certain to be affected next month by an expected surge in cases.
The Central Coast Mariners' home match against Wellington Phoenix, which was initially set for Monday afternoon, was the latest clash to be postponed. A number of Mariners coaches, players and staff have been forced into isolation due after testing positive for the virus.
It also means the Mariners' New Year's Eve match against Macarthur is in doubt while the Wanderers face a race against time to play their New Year's Day match against Western United after several members of the squad contracted the virus.
Perth Glory have been hit hardest by the pandemic in the A-League. The club has gone through two weeks of isolation - serving the second week in Western Australia - and had four games postponed, which will mean a congested end to its regular season schedule.
The latest COVID outbreak has forced the Australian Professional Leagues, operators of the A-Leagues, to balance health and safety protocols while continuing the season. The A-Leagues are the first major Australian competitions to attempt to play through the pandemic without bubble restrictions and with regular interstate travel.
Speaking to the Herald and The Age on Monday, APL chief executive Danny Townsend said the priority would be to proceed with games even if clubs have positive cases, but that players with the virus would isolate from the squad until they were in the clear. However, clubs can request to have games postponed in extreme cases.
"If the coach wants to play, the game goes ahead. However, the club has the option to ask for a postponement if they have five or more players from the previous match team sheet that are out with COVID," Townsend said.
The APL has ruled out postponing whole rounds until the number of cases drops and has no plans to extend the season beyond its scheduled end date in late May, in part to avoid a clash with the men's under-23 Asian Cup which is set to begin on June 1 in Uzbekistan.
To make up time for the postponed games, the APL will play rounds through both the January and March men's international windows and will play midweek games when possible.
"Our intention is to continue and play the season by the end of May but if we have to be flexible with the window, we will," Townsend said. "We will be playing through the international breaks, that will carry on through March, so that will give us an extra round that wasn't originally scheduled."

Soccer: Coach confident about next round despite a dozen COVID cases in Newcastle Jets squad forcing postponement of A-League Women's match
Josh Callinan
Local Sport
NEWCASTLE Jets coach Ash Wilson remains confident her squad will recover in time for next round despite a dozen players testing positive for COVID-19 and a second straight A-League Women's fixture being postponed.
The fourth-placed Jets will no longer host Melbourne Victory at Newcastle's No.2 Sportsground on Friday following the club's worst coronavirus outbreak to date.
It comes after Newcastle missed a match against a COVID-impacted City side in the Victorian capital last weekend.
Wilson believes the 12 individuals, which leaves more than half the Jets playing group currently in isolation, should be fit to meet Perth Glory at home on January 16.
She expects to see "most of them out by Friday".
"We've sent them gym and aerobic type programs to try and make sure they are still doing things so when they come out their bodies haven't lost certain elements of conditioning and they're able to adapt a bit better to the increase in training load when they get back," Wilson told the Newcastle Herald on Tuesday.
"The fact that most of them will be out by Friday and our game against Perth isn't until the following Sunday, that'll give us at least five or six sessions with them leading into that game to make sure we're continuing to load them in an appropriate way where we'll have people available."
Wilson has been in contact with the sidelined players, who are experiencing a range of symptoms.
"I touched base with them all yesterday. They're in good spirits. Obviously some of them are still experiencing some symptoms which is understandable because everyone is going to react different to it," she said.
"They're positive, taking each day as it comes and feeling better than when it first started. We're continuing to monitor them daily."
Kirsty Fenton, who was struck down with COVID before Christmas, returned in the Jets' most recent outing on December 27.
Outstanding matches have yet to be rescheduled.

Will we ever see Kanta play again?
JANUARY 4 2022 - 7:30AM
Newcastle Jets veteran Ben Kantarovski still battling to return from injury
ROBERT DILLON
ALMOST 18 months after he last played a game, there is still no update on when luckless Newcastle Jets midfielder Ben Kantarovski will be available for selection.
Kantarovski, 29, has not played since a five-minute stint off the bench in Newcastle's 3-0 victory against Wellington Phoenix on August 13, 2020, in the last round of their 2020-21 campaign.
The former Young Socceroos skipper underwent complex surgery in April last year to repair a problematic nerve in his lower back and sat out an entire season.
Despite extensive rehabilitation and physiotherapy, he has missed the first five rounds of 2021-22 and it is unclear when, or if, he will be able to resume.
It is understood he has been unable to join his teammates in full training.
Jets coach Arthur Papas has taken a patient and cautious approach with the club's most-capped player and remains hopeful that he can make a comeback later this season.
"Ben has been working hard to return to full fitness, but unfortunately he has suffered a couple of setbacks in his rehab," Papas told the Newcastle Herald.
"However we are still committed to supporting him and hopefully he can rejoin training with the first team in the near future."
Kantarovski, who debuted in the A-League as a 16-year-old and has represented his home-town club in a record 196 games, is off contract at the end of this season.
The playmaker told the Newcastle Herald last year he was hoping to avoid surgery, which he described as "a very last resort".
"That's quite a drastic and risky surgery, so we want to stay away from that avenue, but if it does come down to it, we may have to look at that," he said in March.
A month later, he underwent surgery but it has not provided a quick fix.
Injuries have been a constant source of frustration throughout Kantarovski's career.
Regarded as one of Australia's brightest young prospects when he debuted in the A-League in 2008, he needed a full reconstruction of his right knee in 2010, and had further surgeries on the same knee in 2012, 2014 and 2016.
He told the Herald last March that "the love of football" kept him going.
"There's nothing better than coming day in, day out to play the best sport in the world ... I can't wait to be back out there." he said.

I’d be interested to know the general consensus around the handling of this season.
It’s unprecedented in respect to the COVID situation. This type of outbreak was always going to happen. 90% vax rate and opening of everything and resumption of “normal” life was fair. The Omicron variant being very contagious and people mixing a lot more than any other variant leads to more infections and as such disruptions due to exposure.
For what it’s worth, I think we would see the same numbers in NRL and AFL if their seasons coincided with this perfect storm scenario. But I’m curious what they would do different if anything. They have a knack of skirting rules or making their own.
Is it fair to bring back bubbles for players? Is this just delaying the inevitable exposure. I’m surprised this wasn’t looked at as a plan C. Maybe too late. But also divides opinion whether the players should be in bubbles when the rest of australia is not, the fans going to watch are not etc, it’s a big sacrifice. But also, they are being paid to make these sacrifices. If you don’t like it, move on. 50/50 on that.
Travel is outside the leagues control, maybe this gets easier as other states catch up to the 90% vax rate. But maybe this is where location bubbles or creative scheduling comes into play. Again, I guess the players have to be on board with it.
I also think, for many reasons, the NRL would want every game to go ahead. Where possible. They wouldn’t care if a team had 5 players out. They do it through origin period. Why not here. I’d have liked to see a similar approach. Player welfare is obviously the important issue. Assuming players test negative prior to training and on game day, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be pushing for every game to be played. Play 5-6 youth players. It’s only for what 3 weeks max. (Given the starting 11 can only get it once…). Imo it’s been great watching the new young Australian talent scoring goals and making a name for themselves. What do we have to lose.
The “lack of big names/quality” for a couple of weeks leads to unpredictable games, unexpected results and maybe unearth a talent or two. Imo, the damage from putting out a “inferior” product would be far less than no product for multiple weeks.
Personally, I don’t even know when the next a league game is on. I’ve lost interest. I’ll keep an eye on the Jets games and when we play, maybe I’ll watch a few other games that round. But atm, I have very little interest. There was lack of continuity and it doesn’t even feel like there are games being played.
I’m curious is this is just a localised feeling due to our games being cancelled. Whereas like Adelaide or victory etc who are playing regularly, maybe their support/market is unaffected.
Jeterpool
18-01-2022, 10:26 AM
I haven't watched a game since they started getting cancelled. I couldn't tell you who is top, bottom, played or not. I can't track it and I am also losing interest.
I think the difference between the A-League and the NRL/AFL is simply money.
They have the cash and political connections to create bubbles and centralised hosting of events.
The NRL, like the A-League, have squad limits and salary caps - but they also have a reserve grade. The A-League is playing out of sync with the NPL and the Youth League isn't playing. That limits the fitness of the talent pool below.
I mentioned the other week that I was wondering when these games were going to be played. There hasn't been a plan communicated - doesn't mean that there isn't one, but it would promote confidence if the APL gave fans some idea what was going on. Al we hear from the clubs is that "they're working with the APL to reorganise the fixtures". If we don't do it soon, we will start clashing with the NRL.
What all this means for us, is our games will be condensed and the squad will be tested. Could be good, could be to our detriment.
Either way, this situation is frustrating. Hopefully by early Feb we will be back into it.

My first thought when Deans was let go was along these lines. A bit of deck clearing for the new owners.

I see this Craig Deans and Daniel McBreen (i.e. Dean's assistant) contract renewal being one where we didn't sack Deans last season and moved him into a different role. Now his contract is up we are parting ways.
Where it gets interesting is if those who are leaving are not replaced...then we have a problem.

Agree. Speculation is simply that - speculation. I've got over "rumour mill" news in the Prem etc - until they are wearing the shirt, anything can change. Plus if I have zero opportunity to influence it, so why worry about it until it affects me? It's at that point I'll make a decision. That's my outlook now.
I've not heard of Rabieh Krayem - maybe they have contact in the sale. Wait and see...

It would be fitting to have GVE at the helm when we inevitably fold, he symbolises a lot of the poor decisions this club has never learnt from over the years. Also, him chasing his final paycheck is easier to take then Papas or someone else having to do it.

Wankerers: absolutely not. No deal. We can’t let this happen. You shouldn’t benefit from being a part owner of their club. Ffs.

Apparently, Victory is close to signing Nani who I imagine was one of the 35 players mentioned in this article.
Unfortunately, I do understand the philosophy here and why they think this will work, and according to the article 'Clubs would be aided in securing players with funding gained from its private equity deal with Silver Lake and broadcasting deal with Viacom CBS.'
The hope is if they do this, they attract the right players who are still playing consistently unlike Sturridge who since 2018 had only played 17 games and was visibly falling apart.

The Mariners are the A-League's version of the federal ALP. Media overhypes them, plays down any errors whilst amplifying those of the other side. Makes them out to be battlers better than they really are, consisting of a team of cheating bullies run by a bloke who stays in the background.
Their 30 fans have their own microphone today making them sound like the majority.
And since when do refs upgrade to yellow when they are shown studmarks by said cheats?

Just what the league needs to ensure its long term future, a short term sugar hit! Lets not bother trying to solve our Ownership issue, or fix the technical issues stemming from the Broadcaster or anything remotely important, lets try and move the needle slightly with a few blokes getting their retirement fund

It's beyond me why we'd sign Sotirio over Yuel.
Sure he's not the most gifted player but he does provide something different and a spark coming off the bench.
I think it speaks to a bigger issue I have with a salary capped league which is the constant rotation of players from club to club. As supporters we have a connection with Yuel, we want to see him do well, he's our player. How many clubs has Sotirio played for in the league? He ain't "our player". We have no connection with him and he's no upgrade on Yuel. Just change fur the sake of it

Thought Siatravanis was coming good at the end of the season but probably didn't warrant using a visa spot. Would have been OK with keeping Yuel especially when his rumored replacement isn't that inspiring. Boumal probably on more coin than he was worth.
