Boumal surprised me initially - but 4 goals and 1 assist in 20 A-League appearances is probably less than what we need from an import.
That said, he always looked good and I think was starting to link up well with Penha. His control and ability to hold the ball up were excellent, as generally was his ball retention.
He's the only one I am would have hoped we would have signed.

I'm actually surprised it was only 6.
The likes of Kanta and perhaps even Babalj...maybe one of the midfielders from O'Doherty, Al-Taay or Wilson.
If they are going to announce Kanta - as the player with the most appearances for our club in it's history he needs a specific announcement (in my opinion). Give him the respect his contribution deserves.

Wilson and Thurgate don't play well together, so I'm worried this might mean we are going to lose Thurgate to a bigger side.
Also, we've gone from 4 defensive options at the base of midfield to 2. Maybe we are moving to a 4-3-3 instead of these different formations with a 2 man midfield + Penha we've played this year. Or he's going to try again to find a better starting 6 to play beside Thurgate (at which point O'Doherty is the better bench option with his tenacity and speed over Wilson's).
Basically I don't know, but if the plan is start Wilson and Thurgate together we are in massive trouble.

I think you've hit on a really relevant point - what formation will we primarily aim to play next year?
We look more solid with a back 3, but a back 4 has been preferred across the season.
I wouldn't assume Wilson's retention means we lose Thurgate. I hope an off-season for Wilson in the squad helps build their partnership.

It is a shame. I think he offered us something different, and while I would prefer us to keep Wilson ahead of him (as i mentioned earlier) I would have kept O'Doherty with Arques going. But it seems he just fell out of favour.

The answer is simple:
Who is the agent for Arthur Papas, Josh Sautirio, Kosta Grozos, Brandon Wilson, Dane Ingham, Matt Jurman, Mo Al-Taay?
I totally agree there is a problem here, several of these players got start after start yet showed little and will be extended rather than replaced, while Sotirio will get signed to add to our duds stable, and don't be surprised if we fill other vacancies with uninspiring signings from that same agency to not strengthen the squad at all (they may well have some decent players under their management but they won't be the ones we get stuck with based on our existing signings).

He's a decent squad man, can play whatever role he is put in and always gives 100%. I'll be more concerned if he is starting next year as opposed to being off the bench or being used as an injury replacement.

Kind of torn on this one. You can never fault his effort and he plays like a true 6. However his passing for us was very inconsistent and was woeful this year for the wanderers.
I'd probably have taken him back, but I don't think he'd have fit in Pappas system.

I heard that Sydney were originally letting him walk, until social media and fans absolutely smashed them for it and they quickly asked him to come back to the table and discuss an extension.
So, they obviously want to make room for Penha but might have to keep Ninko in order to keep fans happy, which means someone else will have to go instead.

So a team that missed the finals for the first time in years decides to let go one of the key players who didn't perform to the usual standards and they then change their mind because the fans like him? Man, that is nuts.

A-League soccer: Sammy Silvera, Brandon Wilson, Riley Warland let go by Jets as coach Arthur Papas reshapes roster
By James Gardiner
Updated June 8 2022 - 7:06pm, first published June 7 2022 - 7:10pm
SAMMY Silvera, Brandon Wilson and Riley Warland will not be at the Newcastle Jets next season as coach Arthur Papas opts for a smaller squad with more high-end players.
Silvera, who was on loan from Portuguese club Paos de Ferreira, scored one goal in 19 appearances and was mainly used off the bench.
Wilson joined the Jets in February on a short-term deal and started eight games in midfield.
Warland, who made 11 appearances, had a year to run on his contract in Newcastle.
Papas intends to strengthen the Jets defensive stocks and, with senior men Matt Jurman and Jordan Elsey contracted, opportunities for Warland would be limited.
"To progress you need to play games," Papas said. "If we are not able to guarantee that, I think it is wise to be up front about it. Riley is quite a young player and I still think he has a future ahead of him. I don't think he would have got the opportunity here that he needs."
The Jets had been in talks with Silvera and Wilson about contract extensions but couldn't come to terms.
"We were trying to find ways to fit them in under the salary cap," Papas said. "We gave ourselves a timeline to try and get it done. If we couldn't get it done, we didn't want to limit their opportunities elsewhere by waiting longer."
Wellington Phoenix pair Jaushua Sotirio and James McGarry are understood to be joining the Jets while the club has also been linked to midfielder Reno Piscopo
"We will have a slightly smaller squad next season," Papas said. "There are key positions where we are looking to bring in established players. Most importantly, we want it to be a bit more balanced from defence to midfield and attack."
Papas remains hopeful of retaining on-loan Brazilian Daniel Penha and said negotiations were continuing.
Penha's parent company Atletico Mineiro are reportedly seeking a $800,000 transfer fee for the creative playmaker.
"Those type of transfer fees are not paid in Australian football," Papas said. "There are teams who have players on those type of wages.
"We are dealing with the agent and have been in communication with Atletico. We are trying to work on another loan deal. He is open to staying. If he doesn't stay it is purely a financial reason and I can understand that. His heart is in Newcastle."

I'm not sad about any of those leaving. None were anywhere near starters, so why not look elsewhere and see if we can unearth talent that might actually challenge for spots? I had high hopes for Silvera, but he was not at the races in games. I'm sure he looked good in training but that's not enough for another year.

I'd take a smaller squad with more quality over a bigger squad with more average players taking up the salary cap. Injuries, suspensions will take a toll - but that's when you give the kids a shot. Fans would much rather see an 18 year old local than a 25 year old kiwi at his 7th club. I'm all for it.

Soccer: Jets boss Shane Mattiske confident World Cup hype will flow onto A-League
James Gardiner
By James Gardiner
Updated June 14 2022 - 5:53pm, first published 5:30pm
THE Newcastle Jets youth team and academy players sat, eyes glued to the television at the club's Speers Point headquarters as keeper Andrew Redmayne launched to his right to save the penalty that sent the Socceroos to the World Cup.
YEEEEESSSSS went the roar as the players sprung to their feet and ripped into a rendition of Ole, Ole,Ole.
Most in the room had been up since 3.30am. Many hadn't slept a wink, such was the anticipation.
There were similar scenes in lounge rooms across the nation as the Socceroos booked a spot at a fifth straight World Cup.
All of a sudden, football is back at the front of the Australian sporting queue.
Jets executive chairman Shane Mattiske hopes the World Cup hype will, not only inspire the next generation, but provide a timely boost for the A-League.
"It's a fantastic result for the whole country, it's going to be an exciting year ahead for all sports fans," Mattiske said. "Knowing that the Socceroos are through to the World Cup will bring a new level of excitement to football fans in the community and it will also engage more people in football generally."
The 2022-23 A-League season starts in October and is expected to break for three weeks during the World Cup.
"There is no doubt there will be more interest in football on a broader scale and that interest will come through in the A-League as well," Mattiske said.
Central to the Socceroos' success against Peru were A-League stars Redmayne, Jamie Maclaren and Craig Goodwin, with the later pair slotting spot kicks in the penalty shootout.
"We saw heroes emerge and some of those heroes are playing in the A-League," Mattiske said. "It is great to see players who are running around in the A-League week in week out, perform under the very brightest light internationally and carry us through to a World Cup."
The Jets signed fringe Socceroos Brandon O'Neil last week and are close to finalising at least three more additions as coach Arthur Papas builds the roster.
"With the upcoming Newcastle Jets A-League men's and women's seasons now starting to take shape, there is so much for this community to be excited about," Mattiske said. "We know the A-League will be stronger than ever and that the Jets will be stronger than ever. We have to do our very best to make the most of that."

NEWCASTLE JETS ANNOUNCE FURTHER CHANGES TO FOOTBALL DEPARTMENT
The Newcastle Jets are pleased to announce further changes to their football structure ahead of the 2022-2023 season.
2007-2008 Championship-winning Coach Gary Van Egmond will return to the Club as an A-League Men’s Assistant Coach while also acting as a technical advisor to the A-League Women’s team.
Van Egmond will work alongside current Assistant Coach Arthur Diles to support Arthur Papas in the Men’s coaching structure as well as provide technical support to our Women’s Head Coach Ash Wilson.
This follows the Club’s earlier announcement confirming the extension of A-League Women’s Head Coach, Ash Wilson’s contract.
The Jets are also pleased to confirm the appointment of Ric Marchioli as Head of the Men’s Academy and Head of Boys Youth Development.
Ric will carry out responsibility for all aspects of the youth team while carrying the overall responsibility of male players within the academy including talent ID, coach mentoring, coaching structures as well as management of facilities and scheduling.
Executive Chairman, Shane Mattiske said “A strong focus for the Club is to ensure that across the whole Club, we have a strong football philosophy, technical foundation and alignment to our 1st Men and Women’s teams.
The confirmation of Ric into the role of Head of the Men’s Academy and Head Coach for the Men’s Youth team is a key step in creating a strong football structure at the Club.
Ric Marchioli has strong experience as both a senior coach and technical director in the Victorian NPL, as well as the State Development Program and just prior to the Jets, the Melbourne Victory. He’s been an integral part of our Men’s A-League staff this season just gone and he’ll be a valuable addition to our Academy and Youth structure moving forward.
There is no questioning the depth of experience that Gary Van Egmond holds in relation to Newcastle and the Jets. We’re very pleased to be welcoming Gary back as a formal part of our Men’s and Women’s team football structures.
We’re confident of the value that Gary will bring in as part of the coaching structure for our Men’s A-League team and in providing technical advice and guidance to our Women’s A-League Team.
With recent extension of Arthur Papas and Ash Wilson as our Men’s and Women’s Head coaches, the appointment of Huss, Gary and Ric into our broader football structures and the recruitment that is now well underway, we know we have the right foundations for an even more competitive launch at the 2022/23 A-League season.”

Good to see some fresh faces in the academy area.
I agree it's good to see some changes but I worry about the whole 'multi role' approach, for eg. Marchioli as Head of the Men’s Academy, Head Coach for the Men’s Youth team and Head of Boys Youth Development and GVE as Men’s Assistant Coach and a technical advisor to the A-League Women’s team. In my business when you give the workers half a job to do here and half a job to there, you get half-arse jobs in both areas.
And what the hell is a Men's Youth coach? Giving someone an oxymoron as a job title is a bad start.

Seeing as we play in summer, can only see the down side of us playing the 'warm-up' fixtures (in 30+degree heat) for the Syd & Melb teams who will invariably get prime time slots anyway no matter what we asked for (I'm assuming we 'asked' for that time slot because we were getting it anyway). Was it a random draw for all 32?
I seem to recall, historically, with 10 ALM teams, there would be 4 drawn to play NPL clubs and 6 ALM clubs play eachother.
Which is what we have this year.
But we’ve also got Harper making out this is an evolution and unexpected draw, and should allow NPL clubs to go further.

Good, I agree, completely random should be the way.
Wonder what the odds are that the “random” draw has the same format as the previous model.

It was odd to read Wankerers fans saying that they don't think he'll add much to their game, but are just over the moon because it's made SFC look stupid. Plus, half the Sydney fans blame the club and the other half blame the player. It's just a quality shit show.
Rumours are that Rodwell and Arzani are signing with SFC to soften the blow. So basically, both clubs are signing players either over the hill or average at best and neither will have actually strengthened their already weak squads. It's a City vs Victory comp next season, the next 4 spots are all up for grabs.

Some idiot has decided we need an even worse salary cap then before. They are allowing another yank style "designated player" outside the already hilariously convoluted cap. Wages have to be $300k to $600k tho.
Just scrap the entire thing and allow fees between clubs already. So sick of it.

Two away Coastie games in 7 rounds with home game against them 4 months later? ar too many 3pm kickoffs - 5pm I can handle, just.
At a time when I know of at least one other club complaining about the unfair balance of day games with the big four (both Smurfs and Victory have 9 night home games), seems really odd that we have encouraged it.

Exactly, 7 of our matches are 3PM kick-off or earlier from Dec on as it really starts to heat up middays, hardly seems a balanced draw so they must have pre-determined we won't be contenders again so we can have the sh*t playing conditions instead, it obviously won't make any difference to us as we'll be at the wrong end of the table anyway...

4 of those are away in which I'd say we have minimal input in, and 1 of them is in wellington so really a 5pm kick off. My guess is the club requested a few home 3pm to attract more families

3PM Dec onwards is guaranteed heading towards 35-40 degrees at kick-off especially if it heats up early like it has been December onwards in NSW and QLD last few years, and not much better elsewhere. I really can't see any justification to play this early at the hottest time of the year, show a pre-show and have a few choices between what match you wanna watch for any on at the same time...

Let's forget the days where it gets up to 35-40c
I don't particularly want to be sitting still in the sun when it is 25-30c like it will be guaranteed to be at the minimum at 3pm.
I also don't think we are gonna see really good spectacles of games when play is slowed down to cope with the heat
I would suggest we be playing at 1800 or later at that time if year at the minimum and it should be something the arse clowns at the PFA should be all over not expecting their reps to perform in the ****ing heat if summer days

So I amazed how little information is being shared pre season. There is the odd throw away in a herald article but no story. Eg.
https://www.newcastleherald.com.au/story/7908120/teenage-defender-in-frame-for-season-start/?cs=6160
Natta started alongside Jordan Elsey in the heart of defence in the Jets' nil-all draw with his former club in a friendly on Saturday. It was a near new back four, with Carl Jenkinson stationed on the right and James McGarry on the left.
It was the Jets' second clean sheet against A-League opposition in the pre-season and followed a 3-0 win over Wellington last month.
So 2 preseaon matches, no media, no Facebook posts, no insta etc. Trying to build support by hiding pre season games seems weird.

An A-League club is not an attractive proposition for anybody to buy. Next to no revenue, not Domestic Transfer System, no infrastructure, don't own the stadium, in fact you'll be hard pressed finding an A-Liga club that has actually made any profit in their history
The national competition in general is dying in the ass. The level of interest in the game with just a few weeks to go would have to be the lowest i can recall .
I found myself asking my young bloke just the other day when was round 1. The game was meant to grow a leg with the new league ownership model but IMO it would be fair to say nothing has improved.

No, don't work for the club. Used to help them out a fair bit, and still do on the odd occasion, but their interest in what I have to offer has waned over time. They have access to a system of player data they use instead of me.
My point of difference is that I go back to when we were Newcastle United in the NSL days and include other competitive matches we have played.

That section of fans are obviously f#ckheads and if they happen to fall into a closed hand or two I don't think there'd be an issue. But it's very sad to see that a small, unliked, former NSL club has as many fans as a fresh expansion club. Imagine how much better the league would have been if they'd managed to set some rules and allowed the club's who already had a fan base earn their position in the top flight instead of this franchise nonsense we are left with. Hopefully the second division gets going soon so that regardless of the league's survival we will have the framework there to keep a national football competition going, even if at a semi professional level.
It's not really hard to put some bans on certain symbols, chants, etc and punish clubs financially if they break these rules.... You know like everywhere else in the world.

Just to clarify, I only mean the proper stuff like Nazi flags and clearly anti-semitic or homophobic chants. Anything truly abhorrent that can't be looked past.
If a Facebook group of knobs wants to be both racists AND support any sports club in any sport, so long as that don't do anything openly racist at the stadium there's nothing the club should or could do about it. You can't choose your fans as a club. Having a flag that isn't racist/fascist but claiming to be on your own profile or in private isn't anything that should be the club's issue. Actively promoting those views is different, I don't know enough about SU58 to comment on whether they are good or bad, but they've got more to offer than Macarthur in my opinion, they just need to make sure they play by the rules like everyone else.

A-League soccer, 2022: Jets defender Jordan Elsey cops two-match ban for karate-kick challenge
By James Gardiner
Updated October 17 2022 - 7:39pm, first published 7:30pm
JORDAN Elsey will miss the next two games for the Newcastle Jets after the defender was found guilty on Monday by the match review panel of serious foul play challenging for the ball in the 2-1 win over Perth Glory.
Elsey was given a straight red card for a karate-kick challenge on Perth Glory substitute David Williams in the 72nd minute of the Jets' season opener at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night.
He will miss Saturday's visit by Wellington Phoenix and the away game against Western Sydney on October 28.
Co-captain Matt Jurman, who lost his starting spot to teenager Mark Natta, played the final 18 minutes against Perth and is likely to start against Phoenix.
Initially, referee Daniel Elder had given Elsey a yellow card, his second after being booked for a trip in the first half.
The centreback rushed out to clear a header which bounced high on the edge of the box. His boot made contact with the ball first and then collected substitute Williams in the face.
Elder ruled the high-foot occurred outside the box. But the VAR intervened and after viewing replays, Elder gave Elsey a straight red card and awarded Perth a penalty.
Williams was not injured in the incident.
The match review panel added one game to the minimum one-match suspension.
Elsey had earlier put the Jets ahead with a brilliant header from a Carl Jenkinson cross.
Former Jets striker Roy O'Dovonan was banned for 10 matches after being found guilty of serious foul play for a high-foot challenge on Melbourne Victory keeper Lawrence Thomas in the 2018 grand final. However, O'Donovan did not make contact with the ball. Thomas suffered a cut to the face but played the match out.

A-League soccer, 2022: Beka Mikeltadze strikes late to snatch Jets drama-charged win over Perth to open A-League campaign
By James Gardiner
Updated October 16 2022 - 3:24pm, first published October 15 2022 - 4:44pm
BEKA Mikeltadze scored in injury time to snatch the Newcastle Jets a drama-charged 2-1 win over Perth Glory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday to open the A-League season with three points for the first time in five years.
Defender Jordan Elsey had gone from hero to villain, scoring the Jets' opener only to be sent off and give away a penalty for a high-footed challenged.
But just as the match appeared destined for a stalemate, the Jets stuck on the counter.
Substitute Jaushau Sotirio broke free from halfway, drew two defenders and threaded an inch-perfect pass for Mikeltadze.
The Georgian took a touch and then picked out a spot in the left corner, sending the 7089 fans into raptures.
Opportunities for Mikeltadze had been scarce until that point. But as he did 13 times last season, the 25-year-old produced when needed most.
Elsey had put the Jets ahead with a brilliant header in the 59th minute.
It was his sixth goal in a 150 A-League games and came 10 days after the birth of his first child, son Will.
But Elsey's joy turned to despair 10 minutes later.
The centreback rushed out to clear a header which bounced high on the edge of the box.
He made contact with the ball first and then collected Perth substitute David Williams in the side of the face.
Referee Daniel Elder initially ruled the high-foot occurred outside the penalty area.
But the VAR intervened and after going to the sideline to view replays, Elder gave Elsey a straight red card and awarded Perth a penalty.
Williams was uninjured in the incident.
Fellow substitute Aaron McEneff stepped up and drilled the spot kick into the right corner.
The Jets had dominated the game, albeit not on the scoreboard, until that point.
The home side's intentions were clear from the outset. They dominated possession and tried to get their quick men, Trent Buhagiar and Reno Piscopo in behind.
It wasn't a case of simply shift it wide and bomb on.
They threaded diagonal passes between the lines, involving Angus Thurgate, Beka Dartsmelia and Mikeltadze.
Perth, for their part, were resolute and scrambled well.
After fighting back, coach Ruben Zadkovich would have been gutted with conceding late.
Right back Carl Jenkinson and teenage centreback Mark Natta were outstanding the Jets. Angus Thurgate got through a power of work and James McGarry threatened down the left flank.
Jets (4-3-3): Michael Weier; Carl Jenkinson, Jordan Elsey, Mark Natta, James McGarry; Brandon O'Neill, Angus Thurgate, Dartsmelia; Trent Buhagiar, Beka Mikeltadze, Reno Piscopo
Perth (4-4-2): Liam Reddy; Jacob Muir, Darryl Lachman, Mark Beevers; Ryan Williams, Mustafa Amini, Zac Duncan, Salem Khalefi; Giordano Colli; Bruna Fornaroli, Ben Azubel

A-League soccer, 2022: veteran defender Matt Jurman set for call up as win comes at cost
By James Gardiner
October 16 2022 - 5:30pm
JETS coach Arthur Papas will call on the experience of Matt Jurman to cover the absence of defender Jordan Elsey for the visit by Wellington Phoenix on Saturday.
Elsey was given a straight red card for a karate-kick challenge on David Williams in the Jets' 2-1 win over Perth Glory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.
He will miss at least the Phoenix clash but could be sidelined for longer depending on the outcome of the A-League match review panel on Monday.
Elsey went from hero to zero. He put the Jets ahead with a brilliant header in the 59th minute.
But joy turned to despair 10 minutes later.
The centreback rushed out to clear a header which bounced high on the edge of the box. His boot made contact with the ball first and then collected substitute Williams in the face.
Referee Daniel Elder initially ruled the high-foot occurred outside the box. But the VAR intervened and after viewing replays, Elder gave Elsey a straight red card and awarded Perth a penalty.
Williams was not injured in the incident.
Papas conceded that the challenge by Elsey on Williams was "high".
"The leg is high. I don't know if the head (of David Willaims] is down," Papas said. "We will look at it and see if we have to appeal."
Co-captain Jurman, who lost his starting spot to teenager Mark Natta, played the final 16 minutes and was outstanding.
"Matty came on when we had 10 men and marshalled the defence," Papas said. "For us to be successful, we need to rely on more than 11 players."
Glory substitute Aaron McEneff drilled the spot kick into the right corner to level at 1-all.
The Jets had dominated the game, albeit not the scoreboard, until that point.
"When we scored, we had momentum and probably needed to control the next part of the game better," Papas said. "That culminated in the send off because we were under a bit of pressure. They started to have the ball more, which was a consequence of going down a man.
"To have the spirit to go on and win the game - not just hold out but go on and win - speaks volumes for the group."
The winner was a perfectly executed transition goal.
Brandon O'Neill cleared a Glory corner into the path of speedster Jaushua Sotirio. He went coast-to-coast, burning past two defenders before threading a ball for Beka Mikeltadze, who checked off a defender and drilled an angled shot into the bottom-left corner.
"Last season, we were on the end of a lot of those games at the end," Papas said.
Carl Jenkinson and Mark Natta were outstanding in their Jets' debuts and Angus Thurgate got through a power of work.
The Jets intentions were clear from the outset. They dominated possession and tried to get their quick men, Trent Buhagiar and Reno Piscopo in behind.
It wasn't a case of simply shift it wide and bomb on.
They threaded diagonal passes between the lines, involving Angus Thurgate, Beha Dartsmelia and Mikeltadze.
The Jets had completed 100 passes inside 15 minutes - double that of Perth - but didn't create many clear chances.
"Perth changed from a back four to pretty much a back five with three really strong centrebacks," Papas said. "Not a lot of space to play.
"It wasn't going to be easy to get balls into the box when they have so many numbers there and are sitting quite deep."

A-League soccer, 2022: Positive vibe: Jets skipper Brandon O'Neill says Glory win a sign of things to come
By James Gardiner
October 16 2022 - 6:30pm
NEWCASTLE Jets co-captain Brandon O'Neill won two championships at Sydney FC and knows the importance of a positive start to the A-League season.
He knows what a first-up win can do for a club, especially a last-gasp triumph.
The excitement it creates among fans, the belief it generates in the dressing.
A 10-man Jets climbed off the canvas to beat Perth Glory 2-1 in a drama-charged season-opener at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.
Hired gun Beka Mikeltadze struck deep in injury time, producing a clinical finish after a blistering run by substitute Jaushua Sortirio.
The goal sparked wild scenes and sent the 7089 fans into conniptions.
"That was a very good win," said O'Neill, who recovered from a head clash to play a pivotal role against his old club. "You are not meant to win a game of football with 10 men, you are not meant to have that belief, you are not meant to have that character.
"Only the very, very good teams have that. I think we have a taste of how good we could possibly be this year."
O'Neill was among the first to mob Mikeltadze after the Georgian pierced the back of the net with an angled drive.
It was the first time the Jets have opened their season with three points since the 2017-18 campaign. They went on to finish second and host the grand final that year.
"I'm massive on watching the boys and watching their body language," O'Neill said. "Beka scores in the 94th minute and every single player sprints. We found something from somewhere to sprint after the bloke. I jumped on him celebrating and remember looking to our bench. They were chasing us. the coaching staff, players who weren't even in the squad. That shows something.
It's a marker down in the sand. You want to start like that. You want to give the fans belief. They know that no matter what happens out there, they have a bunch of blokes they can rely on."
Defender Jordan Elsey had gone from hero to zero - producing a brilliant header to put the Jets ahead before 10 minutes later being shown a straight red card for a karate-style challenge that resulted in a game-levelling penalty.
"We went a man down and the boys flicked that switch," O'Neill said. "We had to do the other side of football, fight hard and be resolute.
"Then, all of sudden, we go on and score the winner. If we can play the football we know we can play, plus do that. It is a good recipe.
"But it is round one. We have a hell of a lot to work on. That is exciting because we know we can do the other things very well. Maybe last year, as a club, we didn't have the belief we could do that. To see it first hand, was awesome."
Coach Arthur Papas was equally proud of the result, if a little less effusive.
"It is important to come away with a positive outcome from a difficult situation," Papas said. "I think it represents a little bit about what we are wanting to become.
"We want to play good football, we want to play attacking football and we want to be hard to beat as well. That was the pleasing part."
Next for the Jets is a visit by Wellington Phoenix on Saturday night. However, they will be without Elsey, who is likely to be suspended for at least two matches.

The Jets have announced the establishment of a “Foundation” which now appears to decouple their Youth teams from the senior team. Anyone else concerned with this? Recent reports that the academy was running at a loss and now they’ve been picked up and moved to the side.
Does this help with balancing the books? Or are the Jets feigning a renewed interest in Youth football but in fact dumping them? I’m interested in the views out there.

Perfectly sensible as it is easier to fund programs and get revenue from "donations". Good for tax reasons.
For example, Wests "donate" $350,000 a season to the Knights for their own Youth programs. Wests can then write that off.
Too complex to go much further into it.

Can anyone explain why we put Western United in the A League and ignored the opportunity to bring back 4 X champion of Australia South Melbourne??
Makes no sense at all
Too sleazy and greazy to grow the game so they tried another way and although not that successful has given it some constant foundation. In the 70s we didnt know if there be a national comp season to season.
Good thing is you can still go there now and strut the gold chains.
Whats stopping ya? Being a fat *nglo would be no1.
Not sure if anyone has posted it yet, but the Jets had a friendly with City after the womens game in Tamworth on the weekend.
Ended as a 1-1 draw apparently.

I don't have a problem with hosting the games in one city. Sounds like it's above $10m (who knows how much in contra though), road trips are fun and GF are mostly corporates anyway. All the melburnians should be asking their MPs why they didn't bid more.
There's some real hot takes in the twitterverse at the moment. I'm not sure, but I think the general consensus is that the universe just ended.

New Northern NSW Football board lines up goals after overthrow
By Craig Kerry
December 11 2022 - 8:00pm
New Northern NSW Football deputy chair Mark Trenter has the return of promotion-relegation, the involvement of homegrown legend Craig Johnston in a junior development revamp, and giving the Jets academy cheap access to the federation's Speers Point facility high on his agenda after Friday night's extraordinary general meeting.
Trenter was the only survivor of an overthrow of the NNSWF board led by five of the seven member zones. Chair Helene O'Neill was removed with a 16-1 vote after fellow directors Bill Moncrieff, Peter Dimovski and Mansell Laidler resigned.
Mike Parsons, who became chair, was elected as a replacement along with Paul Sandilands, Lisa Evans, David Willoughby and Lauren Edwards. Trenter, a former KB United player, was not targetted for removal.
Long-serving chief executive David Eland also departed after briefly attending the EGM. His employment's termination by mutual consent with the now former board was announced only via an email press release at 6:31pm, around which time he left the meeting. Trenter said "everyone was in shock" after Eland's sudden exit without notice.
Trenter said finding a new CEO was a top priority.
"I personally want to make sure we get a CEO that actually comes from a football background and has an affinity with the area," Trenter said. "David Eland is a great operator, but David Eland is not the right fit for Newcastle anymore."
The upheaval ended a 15-week battle started when the Newcastle, Macquarie, Hunter Valley, Mid North Coast and Far North Coast zones moved to oust five of the six NNSWF directors. That came a day after NNSWF-endorsed recommendations from an independent review were released to the zones.
Among the proposed changes was empowering clubs to move to an aligned administration structure under NNSWF which would effectively dissolve the zones who run community football.
Trenter indicated the review was the trigger for the overthrow.
"It was the whole process, and then coupled with getting nowhere with promotion and relegation," he said. "I think it was the icing on the cake, the final review report, but prior to that there was a lot of stuff going on."
As for the report recommendations, which were unanimously endorsed by the former board, Trenter said: "There's certain parts of that that have a lot of merit.
"But the one part that was a concern was it was like Russia taking over the Ukraine here. Bringing in all this new staff and company cars and running it from Newcastle. I thought, are they doing this bad of a job? Can we do it any better? The major subject about the review was the cost of the game, and it never got addressed once in the final outcome."
He said the board would look at streamlining measures.
"The zones are good at running community football but there's plenty to be looked at there, and it will be," he said. "For example, I can't see anything wrong with Macquarie, Hunter Valley and Newcastle merging. That would be significant. As directors of a board, we'd have to look at the capitalisation there that could be used for an astro-turf ground rather than these [zone] buildings that we don't quite know what they are servicing."
Trenter's focus, however, was football development.
He said the board would bring back promotion-relegation between the NPL and second-tier Northern League One from 2024.
"The clubs need at least 12 months to know what's happening and to get prepared for it," he said. "But there will definitely be promotion-relegation. There's going to be accountability."
As for a junior development revamp, Trenter wanted to bring "proper football people together" to help end what was seen as a "money-grabbing monopoly".
He also flagged free or heavily subsidised use of the synthetic fields at Speers Points for the Jets juniors.
"The Jets are a major customer of NNSWF, and I know there's been history of the ownership of the Jets, and sometimes they've left debts, but we should be, as a federation, supporting our national league team properly," he said.
"You can't keep thinking about the past.
"We don't want kids from our area going down the road to the Mariners. We want to develop professional footballers that can go on to the Socceroos or that we can keep in our region."
Trenter said "Newcastle can be a pilot for change" in junior development and he wanted to involve Johnston and others football experts locally and from further afield to help improve pathways and access to them.
He said he wanted to put football ahead of business.
"KPIs are not all about that," he said in reference to NNSWF's strong financial position under Eland.
"They are not all about finances. Up until today it has mostly been about finances and at the end of the day, it's supposed to be a not-for-profit organisation. I get sick to death of board meetings talking about how rich we are.
"But I'm very respectful of the way we need a clever businessman to transition that through."
Saturday: The return of promotion and relegation between the men's NPL and second-tier Northern League One from 2024 is high on the agenda of the new Northern NSW Football board confirmed on Friday night.
Football Mid North Coast stalwart Mike Parsons was voted onto the board and elected the new chair at an extraordinary general meeting where Lisa Evans, Lauren Edwards, Paul Sandilands and David Willoughby also became directors. Mark Trenter, the only director not targetted in the overthrow, was elected deputy chair.
Parsons replaced Helene O'Neill as chair after she was removed from the board 16 votes to one. The other directors, Bill Moncrieff, Mansell Laidler and Peter Dimovski, resigned before the meeting.
It was announced via a statement about 6.30pm on Friday that long-serving chief executive David Eland would leave his position immediately after he and the now former board had come to a mutual termination agreement. Eland served in the role for more than 13 years.
The Herald understands Eland was signed to a four-year contract extension shortly before the zones' move against the directors.
Also leaving NNSWF is chief financial officer Annette Hervas, football operations administrator Margaret Wand and finance assistant Kaitlin Radstaak.
The campaign to overthrow the board started on August 23, a day after zones received NNSWF-endorsed recommendations for change from an independent review report into the game's administration and governance in the region. Among the recommendations was facilitating a club-driven move to an aligned structure under NNSWF which streamlined administration and effectively dissolved the zone bodies which run community football.
Despite the upheaval on Friday night, Parsons said in a statement that it was "business as usual".
He was positive about the opportunities presented by a change in leadership at the member federation.
"We wish to thank the members of Northern NSW Football for their vote of confidence last night," he said.
"The new Northern NSW Football Board will come together shortly to commence planning for season 2023, future structure and direction of football within northern NSW.
"At this stage it is business as usual, we have excellent staff within Northern NSW Football and much of the planning for 2023 is complete."
The statement said the new board have indicated their intentions to prioritise grassroots football, achieve a dynamic NPL structure with NPLW, NPL and NL1, with promotion and relegation, from 2024 and reassess junior development pathways.
Promotion-relegation was abandoned several seasons ago because of the small number of clubs in the second-division which met NPL criteria.
In a press release on Friday night, Eland said: "I have been fortunate throughout my long tenure to have been supported by volunteer directors who selflessly dedicated their time and expertise to the game's best interests. The current board is no exception. I respect their determination to address the challenges constraining the game's continued growth and prosperity.
"It has been a privilege to lead football throughout northern NSW. I'm satisfied that I'm leaving the member federation in a sound position. The last couple of years have been very challenging, however, I could not be happier with how the governing body responded to the unprecedented challenges of the global pandemic."

I don't have any drama with it being at a neutral venue like the Superbowl or UCL Final is moved around to different cities each year
I don't see why it should be at Sydney for 5 years though

And I guess this is Silver Lake getting some return on their investment.
Sydney FC (Townsend), Wanderers (Johnny T), Victory (ADP - now resigned), Brisbane (Chris Fong), Melbun City (Brad Rouse), Silverlake rep and APL rep (who I think is Paul Lederer as APL Chair).
We know already Brisbane and MV rejected the idea - City may have as well but majority rules.
They would have got the four votes needed with the two Sydney teams, Silverlake and the APL rep .
As for the overall Chair vote you have Sydney and WSW, Macarthur would fall into line and us and the Coasties would be strong-armed into agreement. Wellington sounded reasonably conciliatory.
WUN, City, MV, Perth and Brisbane have all rejected - if Adelaide joined that would be a 6-6 vote and I am sure the APL chair would get the casting vote.

That's the list of who voted yes and no at the meeting held yesterday or day before.
Dick Peil has come out and said they weren't consulted or asked to vote on the original proposal to sign off on the deal, only regarding whether or not to void the deal and walk away. NSW government said they would pull funding, basically forcing teams like CCM, Macarthur and us to fold under the financial strain.
I hope Townsend is gone by the end of next week. I'm sure he's already made enough in his back pocket from this deal to not have to work again anyways.

The Gypo statement is pretty good, and telling.
The other clubs have been well and truly done over and bullied into submission.....a disgrace
Dear CCM Fans,
The purpose of this email is to set the record straight.
The first time I became aware of the decision to host the next 3 years of grand finals in Sydney was 8:00pm on Sunday night, the 11th December. Prior to that, I had no idea it was even being contemplated. It was a total surprise, and frankly not a pleasant one.
Myself, and the Central Coast Mariners FC, were not consulted about the decision in any way prior to it being made. If we were consulted, we would have advocated strongly for an alternative, fairer model, one where every club gets a genuine, equal opportunity to host. There are many other sporting leagues worldwide that wrestle with this issue and I’m certain we could have taken inspiration from their approaches, if we were involved in the process.
When the League made the decision to host the matches in Sydney, it did so with the support of all five clubs who currently hold voting rights, which doesn’t include us. I do believe those decision makers genuinely felt they were making the right decision to ensure League’s financial stability. However, it is clear to me that the decision making framework needs to be reviewed, as all clubs are in different positions, are different sizes, and have different needs. A transition to a collaborative framework must be considered. All clubs need to share in these decision making processes, and share in the privilege & burden of being responsible for those decisions to our fans and stakeholders.
Yesterday, Tuesday 13th December, I participated in an unscheduled Owners meeting to discuss what the League would do now, given the strong criticism being levied against the decision from fans. This meeting was the first and only opportunity that our club has had to become involved.
During that meeting yesterday, by virtue of the decision having already been made, I was forced to vote for either trying to pull out of the deal with Destination NSW, or continuing with the arrangement that had already been struck and announced. Frankly, it was a lose-lose decision.
If the vote went in favour of attempting to pull out of the deal, it was not certain if that was legally even possible. It was also made abundantly clear that exiting the deal would result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in essential funding to the Mariners from the League being drastically reduced. Further, the advice I received from genuine government relations experts was that ripping up a locked-in deal after already announcing it would severely impact the League’s ability, and the ability of each club within it, to secure government support, funding and relationships moving forward. As one of the smallest clubs in the league, and one that currently loses millions of dollars every year, we rely on funding from the League, and we rely on being able to have positive relationships with government moving forward. Frankly, both are essential to our long term viability. Our pockets just aren’t as deep as other clubs’.
On the other hand, I am first and foremost a football fan. That’s why I became involved in the club back in May 2023, I love football and I want to make a positive difference to the Australian game. Some of the best days of my life, and the majority of my inner circle of friends, are derived from my involvement in football. From this lens, I know how angry and upset I would personally be if my club made it to a grand final without having a chance to host it at home. Candidly, I’d be furious.
Ten out of the eleven clubs that participated in yesterday’s meeting ultimately voted in favour of not trying to pull out of the deal that had already been made. I can’t speak for the internal dialogue and thought process that the other clubs’ representatives went through. But for me, it was a gut wrenching balance between advocating (ultimately pointlessly) for what I felt was ethically right as a football fan, versus reluctantly moving forward with the decision made by others, in the interest of keeping the League, and our club, financially viable long term. Ultimately, I felt I had to go with keeping our club, and the League, alive.
I am frustrated at having been thrusted into this position and I believe it could have been avoided. Consultation with all clubs, stakeholders and fans needs to happen for material choices of this kind. I’m already working with experts on how we can prevent something like this happening again. I don’t have the exact answer to that now, but I will get it, and I will fight hard to ensure changes are made.
I know some will read this explanation and think I made the wrong decision, and I respect that viewpoint. All I ask is that you voice that view in a constructive way, and work with us (not against us) to improve things moving forward.
Myself and Shaun will be hosting a fan forum early next year to consult with everyone further. Please attend, and please tell us how you feel and give us your suggestions. I’m the newest Chairman in the league, and I’ve got a lot to learn, most of which will come from you, the fans.
Yours faithfully,
Richard Peil
There is a big difference with those events in that they have a massive cult following and attract a fairly big global audience
This is the A-Liga Grand Final, which doesnt
Issue is if you announce that Grand Final is on at AAMI Park at 7pm on Saturday 25th May before the season starts you then can give Football Fans all over the country the opportunity to make a weekend of it book accommodation flights etc
Plenty of ****s travel interstate to watch Socceroos matches at a much shorter announcement timeframe so giving the football fans of Australia 9-10 months to get their shit together shouldnt be hard
Play your cards right and move it around the country each year and it turns into an "event"

I mean, the gypo just said the quiet part out loud. The clubs dont make any money.
To be fair im impressed they fleeced the NSW govt out of as much cash as they did. Although an election year does raise the price.
The best thing clubs and players and fans can do is support the concept, make it as big as possible then negotiate an even better deal next time.
But of course they wont and will carry on like commercialism has killed the game when in fact its the only thing keeping the lights on.

The $140 million can be used to grow the game but not pay any debts.
The $15 million is taken as they are short of cash yet last week he was chasing Ronaldo.

Latest on the sale:
A-League soccer, 2022: Jets ponder transfer window as important month looms
By James Gardiner
December 23 2022 - 6:30pm
NEWCASTLE Jets coach Arthur Papas hopes to strengthen "a couple of areas" during the A-League transfer window - but the chance of that happening is likely to hinge on the club's ownership situation.
The Jets have lost five of their past six games to slip to 10th position on a congested ladder. However, they are only five points behind second-placed Western Sydney.
Humbled 3-0 by arch rivals Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Wednesday night, the Jets are away to third-placed Adelaide on Tuesday before hosting Sydney on New Year's Day.
Papas brought in 11 players for the start of his second season, headed by former Arsenal star Carl Jenkinson, Georgian international Beka Dartsmelia, dual championship-winner Brandon O'Neill and Olyroos attacker Reno Piscopo.
Although "really optimistic about what this group can do" the ambitious coach flagged additions to the squad when the A-League transfer window opens on January 10.
"We may need to look in to the market in January but I'm not sure if we can," he said.
"I think everyone understands the reality of our [ownership] structure and the ability to make changes to possibly improve the team in one or two areas. If that is available to us, then that would be a big difference."
The Jets are in the unique situation of having been bankrolled for the past two seasons by the owners of four rival clubs, who have incurred major losses.
Australian Professional Leagues is close to finalising the sale of the club to an Australian consortium. It is hoped the deal, which the Newcastle Herald understands is with the lawyers, will be completed by the end of January.
The A-League transfer window closes on February 8.
"There are teams, for example Perth Glory, who are actively signing Socceroos players (Adam Taggart)," Papas said. "That means they are ambitious and have ambitious owners who really want to make a step up. We want the same because that is what our community and people deserve.
"We have to be very, very grateful to the people who have kept this club alive. That is the first thing. This club would not be around if it wasn't for people who really care about the sport as a whole.
"In the end, you want to thrive, not just survive.
"I feel that we have done a really good job to build some identity and competitiveness from where we started. Does that mean if new owners come in that, fundamentally, we will be different, I'm not sure to be honest.
"If you can mix passion and investment together, you are on a pretty good track.
"I'm extremely passionate about coaching this club. New owners will decide the direction they want to go and how far they want to compete."
The other way to freshen up the squad is to offload a player, which requires that player to be in demand from another club.
Papas would not detail the specific areas of the squad he would like to improve.
However, it is clear they have not sufficiently replaced Brazilian Daniel Penha, who took up a lucrative deal in Korea after a season with the Jets in which he led the league with 11 assists and netted four goals.
"They are discussions for if and when it happens," Papas said. "I have a lot of belief in the group we have got. There are some areas where we can always get better. Our job is to get the best out of this group. They are a terrific group. I don't turn on my players. I take responsibility for what happens out there."
"If change was to come, hopefully, I will be part of that and making sure it gives us the chance to elevate even higher."

Sydney can't even win games when refs gifts them two red cards AND two penalties. They are by fair and away the worst team in the league when you put it into context. Thankfully Corica won't even be able to get another A League gig after this season, walked into a title winning side and turned them into NPL battlers, it's actually impressive.

Former Newcastle Jets youth-team coach Daniel McBreen hits back at comments from Arthur Papas

DANIEL McBreen has responded to claims by Newcastle Jets coach Arthur Papas that the club's junior development was "neglected" on his watch.
After Newcastle's 2-0 loss to Macarthur Bulls last weekend, Papas was asked about the prospect of promoting academy or NPL players to bolster his struggling team.
He replied by suggesting that was not realistic because junior pathways in the region had been "neglected" for a number of years.
Papas said when he arrived at the Jets, "the youth team was 21, 22 years old" and he was informed that the outlook for most of those players, in terms of progressing to the A-League, was "quite bleak".
"People that have been in places for a long time, I think there are questions that need to be asked [of them], as well, instead of just sitting on the side commenting about why certain players aren't given a chance," Papas said.
"Because I tell you what, if the quality is there, they'll always be given a chance."
McBreen, a passionate Novocastrian who played for 15 years professionally in Australia and abroad, spent several years as the Jets' youth-team and academy coach but was not retained when his contract expired last year.
The former striker, who now works as a television commentator, said he was "taken aback" when he learned of Papas' remarks.
He felt they were largely directed at him and fellow former Jets employees Craig Deans and Kew Jaliens.
"I was made aware of the comments by Arthur Papas after the game," McBreen said. "I don't want to get in a slanging match with anyone.
"But the facts of the matter are that the average age of the youth team was 18, and I have the data to show that.
"It's also widely known that the academy has been under-resourced for years, but many passionate, qualified locals have worked hard to give kids the best platform, in difficult circumstances."
As for the suggestion that there was little talent emerging from Newcastle's academy, McBreen pointed to teenage striker Archie Goodwin and midfielder Lucas Mauragis, who has been loaned out to Wellington Phoenix this season.
"We have one of the most highly rated youngsters in his age group in Archie Goodwin, and he has hardly been sighted, despite showing his capabilities last season," McBreen said.
"You can add Lucas Mauragis, who is playing regularly at Wellington. There are two youth/academy products who Novocastrians would love to see playing in a Jets jersey."
McBreen said "the smell of an oily rag" approach to funding the Jets' academy was in stark contrast to the cost of the first-team roster and support staff assembled during Papas' tenure, along with upgrading the training base from Newcastle University to Maitland's athletics centre.
"I think it's a good thing that the academy has now been set up as a foundation, which means that money being given to the academy will now remain in the academy, which has not necessarily been the case in the past," he said.
Meanwhile, after seven losses in their past nine games, the Jets are under pressure to get their season back on track when they tackle defending champions Western United in Ballarat on Sunday.
Newcastle are three points adrift of the top six and can scarcely afford to fall any further off the pace.
Rookie midfielder Callum Timmins, who made his starting debut in last week's defeat, said morale was still high in the squad, despite their recent run of outs.
"The confidence is still right up there," he said. "The teams playing against us, they'll still be scared and worried about our performances. I think they have been good ... as soon as we start adding goals to that, I think we'll be unstoppable.
"The quality of the group that we've got, the confidence won't drop."
Jets veteran Jason Hoffman is expecting a warm welcome from former teammate Nikolai Topor-Stanley, who has not played since he was sent off against Melbourne Victory on Boxing Day and subsequently suspended for a game.

Herald story above
The youth development has been a failure for years but this is irrelevant
Why can't Archie Goodwin get a start in this club by now??
He is 18 FFS and should be in the side every week
Pappas can start by looking firmly at his coaching department first and foremost for their inability to develop this kid under their watch
