SOCCER SEVENS: $1.4M CARROT FOR A-LEAGUE’S VERSION OF BIG BASH
SUPER goals from outside the box worth two points. Power plays where goalkeepers are benched. Even female players mixing it with the boys.
These are some of the initiatives in a $1.4 million Soccer Sevens format devised to help the A-League combat abbreviated forms of rival sports. While football purists are loath to embrace change, their sport remains the only major Australian code without a shortened version at the top level.
The first steps toward closing that gap were taken on Tuesday, when representatives from Sports Events Australia met with FFA boss David Gallop to outline the concept. We got a sneak peak of the presentation, which envisages a weekend tournament involving all 10 A-League teams. Matches would run for 10 minutes a half and be played on full-sized fields, with teams split into two pools.
The three highest-ranked teams from pool stages would progress to a six-team finals series on the Sunday evening.
The creators are confident a $1.4 million prize pool can be generated through a tourism model based on this year’s successful NRL Auckland Nines tournament.
In effect, the tournament is tendered to a host city, possibly Adelaide or Gold Coast, whose local council provides financial support in return for publicity and revenue from travelling fans.
Tuesday’s pitch asked Gallop to consider a festive season time frame to give the A-League an answer to cricket’s Big Bash, which was a resounding ratings winner
last summer.
While receptive to the idea, Gallop said he would prefer a pre-season slot.
“While it’s not a new idea and there would be some difficulties placing the tournament in our crowded season, any event where fans got the chance to see their players and teams is worth looking at it,’’ he said. “We’ll keep an open mind.”
