Doesn't any one know much about this New Zealand international we are trialling???
According to the ever reliable Soccer Stoppage Time that player is Ryan De Vries

Leo Bertos is TRAINING with the jets, not TRIALLING. He has no intention of gaining a contract. Just getting some training under his belt before he heads overseas to the IPL

Seems like a cheap option... 23, played his entire career (that I can see) in the ASB Premiership. South African born, NZ naturalised, capped in the friendly against South Korea a few months back.
Hope he is amazing.

Position?
Listed as a forward. Scored 25 in 51 with Waitakere United but only 7 in 29 with Auckland City. He also plays for Bentleigh Greens, scored in their FFA Cup campaign last year, 21 goals in 45 games.
SST's tweet say he is a wide forward though... so more cover for the flanks, maybe? Impressive goal scoring record for a wide player if true.

Was a regular pre-Gombau. Slowly phased out of the first team as the Spanish influence really kicked in. Started 73 of his 106 games for Adelaide but only 17 of them were in the last two years... and only TWO of them last season.
Cheers mate, so if he were to come here he would be trying to resurrect his career and to basically prove Gombau wrong

Watson can also play right back effectively. He isn't a spectacular box to box midfielder with a great shot or outstanding passing. He does the little things right and has good technique and a decent game tactical sense

Apparently agreed to terms, has a medical tomorrow, so id be guessing we will have confirmation by the end of the week

So he is following the same career path as roundabout???
Grim - what other HAL players would you compare Watson to? I can barely remember watching him play, but figure if I get told "he's like this guy" that'd at least give me an idea on what he's like.

He is nothing flash, just does a job in defensive midfield. Not a great passer, not much of a touch or a dribbler but holds his position and can make the odd tackle.
I'd say the comparisons to a lesser Brillante or on par with Pepper are about right.

Cowburn hasn't been signed
Lundy for RW/LW ahead of Pav
Haliti back up for AMC as well
Haliti as starting striker with who we have with Pav as back up there
I think?
Barresi is still under contract as well for CAM.

And that's 3 players for 2 positions. We still need an attacking player because what hasn't been added is goals.

Some blokes elsewhere saying he is a gun... I've posed the question as to why he has never played above ASB or Vic NPL level. And given he is a kiwi, why isn't Ernie chasing him to replace Burns if he is as amazing as he is being made out to be.

By all reports from what I've heard Zenon after being shafted by Muppet moved back to Cairns with his family and is happy there and running his own Football clinic for kids. Very unlikely that he would uproot his family again even if an offer was forthcoming.

Why is it that we always seem to struggle majorly with visa issues for our foreign players?
I would have thought under FFA ownership that we could have pushed these things through easier.

Something has me worried about this Alivodic situation, even by the way the article was mentioning that "Other than Haliti, David Carney and rookies Lundy and Radovan Pavicevic, their front third stocks appear thin."
i dont think they are too confident that he will return. This will be a massive loss, after he picked up fitness last year he was easily one of our most potent attacking players, i was really expecting greater results with a pre-season. However all that may not be possible

Especially worrying is that, if alivodic doesn't return, he is likely to be replaced by someone like danning or de vries. We need alivodic's guile, experience and creativity, even if we sign a super no.10.

I don't see how it can be that difficult tbh. He has played in the country before.
Sydney FC aka Bondi White Eagles aka Serbney FC are signing guys from Serbia and Slovakia left right and centre, and I'm confident their guys won't be blocked by red tape before the season starts.
Like I said earlier, I assumed under FFA ownership that these kind of issues would be extremely less existent. The fact that they aren't says to me that potentially in certain areas we've (ie forum geniuses) been way too harsh on former admin.

Just a hunch but recall when Alivodic came out and was very supportive of Stubbins in the media? He re-signed when Stubbins was still in charge and may have thought that he would be a key player in the Muppet's plans for next season. The Muppet is shown the door and all of a sudden he realises that he is just another player in the squad fighting for a spot under a totally new coaching set-up. Maybe he has got cold feet and won't be returning!?

Newcastle Jets welcome Watson
Newcastle Jets can today confirm that another player has been added to the club’s Hyundai A-League 2015/16 roster, with former Adelaide United utility Cameron Watson having finalised a one-season deal with Scott Miller’s men.
Watson, who started 73 of his 106 apperarances for the Reds during his five-season spell in the city of churches arrived in Newcastle yesterday afternoon and successfully completed his medical with Jets staff.
With the ink now dry on Watson’s contract, Miller said that he is confident that the versatile former FC Porto and VVV Venlo man will prove to be a shrewd acquisition for the club.
“Cameron Watson has accumulated sound A-League experience over the past five years to complement his time developing in Europe when he was younger,” Miller said.
“A clear benefit for us is that Cameron can play not only a midfield role, but also provide cover in the right fullback position. Naturally this adds depth to our squad and will help increase competition for places in the team.”
“We view Cameron as a combative but also clever player who at 28 still has time some of his best years as a professional ahead of him,” Miller concluded.
Watson said that he is pleased to link with his second A-League club, and is excited by the opportunity he has been given with the side from Hunter Stadium.
“It’s a new challenge and a fresh start,” Watson said. “There are exciting times ahead I think with this rebuilding phase of the club.”
“In terms of my style of play, I have always prided myself on getting up and down the field and helping out in defence and attack.”
“Newcastle was always a tough place to come and play while I was with Adelaide, so I am looking forward to helping the team make sure that whenever we play we make our Members proud,” he said.

Doesn't Watson have European Youth experience? Trying not to wade into this striker debate but if we are going to take that as a positive we should do the same for Watson.
Does anyone think that the FFA are trying to leave the 9 & 10 spots free in case a new owner comes in and wants a couple of decent signings to get an instant feel good factor? Or do we think the FFA have already found them and are waiting to announce them in a few weeks to get the most impact in membership sales once the media starts talking about the HAL again? Just getting my conspiracy theories out there...

He seems about on par with our current options with a better upside. Which isn't meant to be an insult, just he probably isn't a HAL level starter yet.
My initial point was in linking the Watson hate to the Babalj, let's call it "non-hate". People jumping to negative conclusions. I'd rather have a team of Watson's over a team of Carney's. Cameron Watson's that is, no Shane's allowed.

I will agree with you he has never set the HAL on fire and has done little in Europe to warrant marquee money.
Neither has that poor mans Matt Simon the one and only Tomi Juric who everyone would be fapping over if we signed him (except me)
Babalj has big potential. Make no mistake about it. For the right price he would be a very good signing for a side as ours.
To say he is on par with Labi and the rest of our strikers says to me you are massively over rating the blokes we have and you may be getting high off the horse shit smell blowing in from your farm.

If Babalj won the golden boot it would not suprise me. He's got good technical skills, a powerful shot, and he's as big and strong as anyone you are ever likely to see in the A-league.
His record in the A-league so far plus a little overseas experience would make him well worth a shot as an Aussie marquee.

My bad, I'll trust others judgements on him. I just had a look at his stats and saw 2 goals in 3 years and thought he had gone to Europe and had barely kicked a first team ball. If he comes to Adelaide i'll get to see him play and will be happy to eat my words.

I'd say Danning was one, Ramsay left earlier in the week.
My two cents worth on Babalj, yes he has the talent and showed potential from a young age but at 23 now he has to start delivering on the pitch a la Taggart for us back in 2013/14.

Max Burgess, Kofi Danning, Aryn Williams and Pat Antelmi were the trialists cut. Lundy and Cowburn will train with the squad until the end of the pre-season then Miller will decide wether to give them senior contracts or youth contracts. Pretty disappointed Antelmi and Burgess weren't offered contracts.

That's not right
Lundy has 12 months left on his Yoof Contract and will be training with the squad full time just like he did last season. He will be then either selected in the NYL side or HAL side as Millertime deems fit.
He is as contracted to the club just like Carney BK Leaky G etc.
Yes the club can choose to release him completely from his contract right now but they would be obligated to pay him out.
Millertime though may like what he sees in Brandon and offer him a big boys contract before season starts anyway. Unlikely as for simple accounting procedures with the salary cap they would be better off waiting the 12 months and then doing it thus keeping Brandon at the club but paying him less money for the meantime.
As for Cowburn he is on the same Yoof contract he was on before he played HAL level last season.
If he gets picked and plays he in the HAL he gets paid match payments as stipulated in the deal which count towards the salary cap. He is on the exact same wicket as every other kid in the Yoof team except he is expected to train with the first team.
He is too old to meet the criteria of the Yoof contract Lundy is on and the club will have to upgrade him to a senior deal in the next 12 months or cut him completely when he gets too old for the Yoof team
Difference between the two really is that Lundy has a guaranteed income from the club where as Cowburn gets peanuts unless he plays HAL or Millertime gives him a senior deal.

Lundy hasn't yet been offered the "like for like" contract. My knowledge is that he has to earn it from "Millertime". If not then it's back to the "yoof" team. I'm a fan of Cowburn but it's not looking likely that he will earn a first team contract.

Their trials ended and they won't be signed at this stage. Doesn't mean they won't be.
Miller wants to sign the foreign 9 & 10 first. I suspect if their is any salary cap left they will either sign one of the trialists or hold the spot for January.

The problem with these NYL contracts is that they don't bind the player. At any stage during the year another club can offer Cowburn a short term injury replacement deal and he can walk immediately.

I was told from a deadset spot on sauce Lundy definitely signed his contract the day before Pascoe got his job back.
As this subject of Pascoe getting his job back definitely came up in discussion when I last spoke to my sauce on Brandons contract status

Thinking of the salary cap..
Archie Thompson has basically been the catalyst for the FFA to look into some of a players salary being excluded from the cap if they've been with the club for 5 years. I think it's 150k exclusion.
This surely means all of either BK or Kanta's contracts will be considered outside the cap, and we have a bit more room to play with for our remaining two visa spots.
Also, apparently the FFA are moving to 2x Marquee positions, as opposed to 1x Marquee and 1x Australian Marquee.

what warrants piovaccari signing a maruqee poisition at WS? Hasn't played for the national side before hasn't he?
Even though you said ignore, I feel like it's fair to point out that Piovaccari has a far, far better CV than Sydney FC's Filip Holosko. The fact that Piovaccari was "unlucky" enough not to have been born in a far lower ranked international side would be a large reason why he hasn't had international caps. And Piovaccari has come from La Liga, and scored goals in an awful team there, whereas Holosko came from Turkey. So I'd say even without the international games, Piovaccari is much more deserving of a marquee position.

Second to what pv4 said... marquee is a daft term and the FFA just need to man up and go "we are replacing the marquee player rule with the designated player rule" and just make it simply two people (one Oz, one whatever) who don't count towards the salary cap.

I don't agree with your argument here MFKS for you to say Labi is not on par with Babalj and that he is overrated, I think your overlooking things and focusing to much on assumptions rather than facts in this case.
Because if we compare these 2 players Labi has scored more goals and achieved 10 times more silverware then Babalj has in last 4 years and his entire playing career.
Babalj's achievements in last 4 years -
Red Star Belgrade 6 (1)
2013 Melbourne Heart 9 (1)
2013– AZ 0 (0)
2015 → PEC Zwolle (loan) 4 (0)
2015– → Adelaide United (loan)
Labi's achievements in last 4 years -
Scored 5 goals in Asian Champions league
Scored 10 goals for WSW in. Aleague
2012 - Aleague Minor Premiers
2013 - Aleague grand final
2014 - Asian Champions
This all proves your argument is not valid when it comes to the quality of these 2 players.
I will agree with you he has never set the HAL on fire and has done little in Europe to warra
nt marquee money.
PS on another note tone it down a bit with your replies around here.

You add Alivodic to that "A" team and a quality #9 and #10 (fingers-crossed) and we have a decent squad with a good mix of youth and experience. I think we can be competitive as long as we do not have too many injuries to key players because our lack of real depth (as highlighted by the players in the "B" team) is a concern.

Yeah Tommy, it's been years since we've had a team that has been able to power on for the full 90 minutes plus. Under GVE and Muppet we have become a team that has looked off the pace compared to most of the other teams. The fact that in so many games over this era we have given away so many goals in the crucial last 15 minutes shows that we have been not only physically deficient in terms of fitness but also tactically naïve in not being able to close games out when we've had the lead.

Surely we can't be physically deficient this season though. I'd say this our best opportunity since 08 to be on level pegging with the top teams fitness wise at least. Miller and jones expertise should have even this squad purring come the opening rounds. That will be our first main indicator of a hopefully more professional club culture.

Didn't the Dishonourable Member say that Cowburn was on an NYL contract which means he is still "contracted" to the club but only gets match payments, not a senior contract where he has his guaranteed 45k a year or whatever it is for U23?

I really think Kanta has fizzled out and wont be in the a-league once his current deal expires. I think cooper might step up to the plate this season tho

May have been a completely different player if Bayern got their hands on him, to be fair.

Injuries are what has troubled Kanta. He's still got plenty of time to overcome the injuries and get back to his best.
In saying that Taj Minecon was far and away the best player I had seen in the NYL and he fell out of orbit and has been floating in space ever since.
Injuries are what has troubled Kanta. He's still got plenty of time to overcome the injuries and get back to his best.
The problem I've noticed is with each injury, whether it be a legit injury or a punched-in nose or whatever, Kanta seems to be getting slower. I don't know whether the injuries have led to this, or if he's just getting slower due to his size/weight variations over time, or whether I'm just making it up in my head. But he seems distinctly slower than back in his Magic, and early-HAL days, and I find that a detriment to his game nowadays.
Note that I realise the irony of me saying this, when I myself have been likened to Per Mertesacker, who has been accused to turn slower than milk.

I think his mobility is an issue. He used to close players down very quickly giving them no time on the ball. In more recent times he's not puting the pressure on the opposition as much.

I agree. If there is a problem with his physical condition I think he is surrounded by the right people to sort out the right body composition for him.

There are some similarities between Kanta and Jobe's careers. Both showed a lot of potential as teenagers but it seems that every season there was either a prolonged lay-off (Jobe's ankles, Kanta's knees) or niggling injuries which have prevented them both from rarely playing a full season and therefore really cementing themselves as A League players. This is probably Kanta's last chance to take his game to the next level, he needs to stay injury-free and become a mainstay of the first XI otherwise like Jobe he will probably end up back in NPL.

oh man is Kanta really only 23??? jesus it feels like he's been here forever. If it is his body thats failed him thats really sad. Hopefully it is just a coaching adjustment that might inspire him back to his best.
i really want to see him succeed. always seemed like a decent fella and a logical captain.
does anyone know how old Jobe was when he left? and wasn't it more to do with frustration with GVE/Middleby rather than injury?
i always thought he was vastly underrated at our club, and was playing good football right up until he left.
might be remembering things different though.

I think he was about 27...
Didnt he leave because he was captain but was then told by GVE mid-season that he wont be retained, so he spat the dummy (and rightfully so) and quit there and then...?
I could be wrong, but thats what i remember of it

Big difference I have noted about the Jets this pre-season is there have been no player promises or rumours.
Recent years have been dominated by rumours and speculation and promises of players about to sign and lots of names being linked to the club.
This year silence. Sauce has dried up.
Pretty much the first inkling we get of anyone is a day or so before hand when it is really just formalities to finish off.
Still nothing from the club re "No 9 and 10" positions other than they are closing in on 1 and still looking for the other.
While I would like those positions filled (ideally already filled!) I must admit I do like the professionalism of the approach to player recruitment this season compared to any in living memory.
That said I am checking the papers every day hoping for a sniff of something!!

I think burgess was more of a no10 than a wide player. Having cooper and baressi as young 10's and bringing in a visa 10 I think is why he wasn't signed. I agree though, decent prospect.

If we're getting new owners soon™, I would think we'd be holding out until they come in before we sign our 9 and 10... Which would leave a very short period for pre-season training/team chemistry.. I can't see FFA forking out money for players then having new owners come in..

The 9 and 10 we're chasing will be under the cap. If we sign them, then new owners come in, theres still room for 2 marquees outside of the cap if a new owner decides to cough up the coin

Not if they are Visa players. If new owners are imminent then wait and see is a better approach. This would have been part of the discussions anyway

Cowburn played with yoof today did not travel to Melbourne??? After watching the yoof for a few years now I find it hard to believe they have not pushed Papas on to the next level another kid they are going to stuff up. Seems as though he is a gap stopper/filler is played in a different position every couple of weeks, can not see how that is good for ones development? When in midfield by far a stand out but does not seem to get that opportunity often. On Memory from last year he was up there with player of the year NPL playing midfield then was moved back to CD with a few games to go. NYL season played RB and some CD I think. This year NPL all over the place???

When you have a young player like Papas who was representing Australia at U/17 level as a CM you would think that his club would be developing him in that position but no this is the Jets we're talking about here. We then reward the man who has been in charge of "preparing" our Youth players for the next step up for the past few years with the position of Acting Football Manager!

Tinkler took a giant dump on two of Hoole's best mates in the squad, and he lost faith in the club and saw no light at the end of the tunnel so took what was a good offer presented to him.

Nah, it is more about the fact that anyone who saw him in that GF killing it in the mids knew the Jets had a chance at something especially when they have had no decent kids for ages yet he got put in every other position then prob thought screw it I'm out, then once he was lost they gave him a few games in his best position and he prob played his best football.

I don't think Hoole will ever be as good as Nicky Carle at his peak - and as much as I like Nicky Carle he wasn't a superstar either.
Moreover, if Hoole cares about how his mates are treated then professional sport may not be for him. It's a business. You do whatever you can to get to the top and let nobody stand in your way. Sad but more often than not that's how things work.

Not always I agree with you Plaguey but you are spot on here. He came to the Youth team from Magic as a #10 yet for about the next 18 months he was played predominantly as a RB, where he made his debut for the seniors. Everyone knows the story and I've already repeated it a couple of times myself but who knows we had a talented kid here who had the potential to maybe be our best attacking player since Halpin and the club blew it big time.

Hoole was used in various positions in the Youth team and while capable he did not stand out as being a class above everyone else.
With respect to Messi I totally disagree with you. While he might not have suited the role of a central defender as soon as he started to move forward with the ball or received a pass people would have known he was special.
It still doesn't mean I think the way Hoole was used by the club was fair either. Then again, Hoole is in a long list of players the Jets have tried to play in positions that did not suit them,
GVE for example tried to make a striker out of a defensive midfielder and the kid copped shit from you lot because he couldn't score goals.
