more herald.
roar CEO slams refereeing. makes a reasonable point about the quality of refereeing reflecting the poor management from FFA.
best line from the article:
"It's not just one occasion, two occasions - multiple occasions now that linesmen have got offside calls drastically wrong, which do turn a game.
if maccarone wasn't offside, there were millimetres in it. "drastically" is just a pathetic attempt to divert blame. and let's not mention that fox sports regularly say that the line they draw on the field is an estimate and subject to a lot of errors (camera angle, frame rate, definition/resolution). but hey, if it means that a coach (or CEO) keeps their job, i can see why they blame referees/VAR.

I'm ok with this....the more clubs bag the refs and VAR, the more likely something might finally get done about it.
Won't happen until something goes against one of the big guns. Not surprisingly its everybody else copping it.

It not hard to fix
Import 2-3 refs from Europe
Just find somewhere where the wages for reffing are inferior to here.
Get them a work visa
Problem solved

Considering the issues they have with EPL refs, what makes you think refs from some lower Euro league are going to be any better? And if VAR is going to overrule them half the time anyway, it doesn't matter how good they are.

I think the standard of officiating in Europe is vastly superior to the shit the HAL refs dish up
Considering how little refs can be paid in Europe and how much we pay our refs some conpetency from the FFA could see us poach quality refs easily when you factor in lifestyle wages to relocate etc
The refereeing department needs a shake up as it now bordering on shambles
It a regular event them ****ing things up these days

Official RBB comment on the active support ban for the Perth game.
“We understand that WSW FC were forced into a position of taking action by the “governing body”, to appease shareholders and the media alike, although we find it utterly ironic that clubs who voted against the FFA recently, are still being bent over a barrel and flogged by Lowy, Gallop and CO. There is a clear lack of balls. Club owners and CEO’s are quick to admonish the FFA behind closed doors, but kneel down and lick their boots in the public domain. There are only a handful of people with enough balls to stand up to the FFA, the rest have sold their souls along with their dignity and respect. The fact that an exuberant display garners more attention by “football pundits” than the state of our game, should highlight the skewed vision that those who claim to love football have.
“Football in this country is in an absolute shambles. Attendance figures, interest in the league as a whole, marketing and fan engagement have been on a steady decline. The FFA are so self indulged with holding onto power, that an appeals process agreed upon in the public eye, is still yet to see the light of day. Natural justice would spell the end of the FFA’s nefarious reign. FIFA, itself a corrupt body, saw the state of football and ascertained the need to intervene.
“The sport has become nothing but a corporate product being dictated by sponsors and suits who have no knowledge of football.
“We encourage all fans across the league to support their teams in the way they see fit. This is what separates our sport from the others. Its time the fans took back ownership of this sport from the dictatorship.
“Your biggest stakeholders, the fans, will not go silently.”

Gee it's hilarious hearing Sydney players and staff just assume they are going to make the Grand Final.
Odss on, they are - but it's not set in stone just yet. Nothing would make me happier (apart from us winning the lot) to see Sydney bundled out at home against whoever they draw in the Semi Final

What does this mean?
There were a lot of contentious calls, there will be a different referee in the grand final so what happened tonight won’t happen again
Firstly, they know they are in the GF, second they know who the ref will be?

It's not just Syd Ffa players and staff, it's everywhere in the press: "Jets, City and Victory are fighting to be in the gf against Syd Ffa" or something like that.
I agree it would be highly satisfying to see them knocked out at home by a Melb team.

It will be an interesting scenario regardless. No doubt the FFA will try to screw us over should we manage to get hosting rights. If the Smurfs get to host where will they play? According to an article on the ALeague website, the GF will be played on Saturday night May 5. Waratahs have a game at Allianz at 3pm on that day & there is an NRL game there on the Sunday.
Will Sydney have to play a home GF at ANZ?

This, and the fact that ref completely ignored Buijs' deliberate elbow to Nabbout's throat (start of 2nd half). That was pretty evident: straight red, but Nabbs, being a man and not a p***y, didn't cry or roll like a pig.
And still Brosque feels like complaining about the ref... what a w***er.

You can see what damage that does to the A-League in terms of the mainstream.
Last night I watched Back Page on Fox....they showed the Jets goals and mentioned the game for about 30 seconds (nothing about crowd, or atmosphere or much else).
Showed the Buijs incident then went on for about 3 minutes showing clips of "sockah players" rolling on the ground.

Its pretty hard to draw an arbitrary line and decide what crosses it - but there's got to be a point where ridiculous and comical overacting is grounds for bringing the game into disrepute - especially here in Aus where one of the biggest complaints against the game from outsiders is that players are soft, the game is soft and everyone dives and pretends to be hurt. Giving these idiots 10 second clips to look at and use as ammunition is, as you said, damaging our game's reputation.
Buijs took things to a whole new low

I think diving is a slightly different issue: it's about trying to milk a particular situation, possibly making intentional contact with a defender to obtain a penalty, exploiting an inexperienced or clumsy defender. I don't condone or endorse diving, just to be clear, but I think it's done with a "justifiable" purpose.
Simulating an injury is on a totally different level imo: too often we see players rolling and screaming in agony, then having a quick peep at the ref, and then suddenly recover to full fitness once they see that no action is taken. In this case, ref should assess their condition after the "injury" and give a straight red if they reckon a simulation occurred. This would fix the problem.

There is no ethical reason to dive, it is also just straight out cheating - I can't accept this "entitled to go down" crap. What is happening now is the same thing escalating over the decades.

How do you suppose the ref does this - considering the arguments happening at the moment related to their ability to apply the rules of the game how do you expect them to be able to assess if a player is injured or not. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have much training in that area. Also some times other factors can impact a players response (Im definitely not saying that was the case on the weekend) hypothetically suppose that odonovan had poked him in the eye, his actions could of been a reaction to that, how does the ref then say he was injured or not and rule on it, how do we decide what is an appropriate action to that injury. Injury shouldn't factor into the equation, if the ref thinks the action is worth a card they give it (and VAR overides them) and then match review panel can act if they deem necessary and we all move on.

Sorta like when the player goes down and grabs the ball to force the ref to make a decision. Could fix it by allowing team captains to have a couple of reviews (not a fan of this).
What I also don't like is the way that they can't decide if they want VAR to be quiet and in the shadows, working behind the scenes, or if they want it to be open and part of the game. The half and half shit is annoying. Either don't involve the centre ref and don't stop play, let them do stuff behind the scenes - OR do as they currently do but show the replays on the screen when they are reviewing and let us hear the discussion between refs. Although I'm gonna lose it if I have to hear anyone say "rock and roll it for me"

I'm not saying it's always possible, but in the majority of the cases a ref should be able to assess injuries and player behaviour (unless they've never reffed a football game before...): e.g. player rolls for 10 seconds holding his leg in agony, then sprints away... pretty easy to assess I think.
You don't even have to interrupt play: let the phase finish, then show him a yellow or red (this could be done silently by VAR as well).

Would lose alot of goodwill built in Newcastle though. We need to keep a good team to the end of the season not half way through it.
If this did happen the reaction would be more terse. Not happening to others.
Maybe we really have played our grand final.
The downside to a well performing club and its players.
Given Dimi is within a short and curly of making it to Russia he would be best looking like a standout week after week here at the Jets as opposed to going elsewhere at this point in time. Same with Nabs, If he does not get game time in the J League he can kiss that opportunity goodbye with his inclusion in this 29 man squad the closest he is going to get.

Agree with this...right now it is an advantage to be a big fish in a small pond. Fringe players os can drop off the radar. I'll bet if he stayed in Korea and was doing well Dimi wouldnt be in the squad now. BUT...maybe Bert has the Pim attitude about the A-League?
Dimi tried Korea and came back with his tail between his legs. Jets took him back and he has turned his game around. Just had a baby and the clan is close...might have to re-sign Kosta for the greater good.
This would not look good to the local bandwagoners who dont understand the economics of football though.

I think nabbouts high octane approach would benefit the national team. Sure he might not have the consistently or experience of other candidates but his work ethic would be a huge plus.
I agree with the sentiments. I didn’t think nabbout would go tbh. If the squad was announced before the offer came do you think he would have gone?
Definitely know he’s getting consistent game time, scoring goals and in form.

got to keep in mind, apart from no release clause, Dimi has already had a less than happy stint in at a large Asian club feeling homesick etc, he might not be as keen to jump in with his eyes closed this time round (Japan and Korea still have the same issues as far as language barrier and totally different cultures to an Aussie/Euro lifestyle, if Dimi couldn't feel at home in Korea Japan isn't going to be an ideal move either, he may not be interested at this stage of his career in anywhere except perhaps Europe)

Simon Hill forgot to mention that the Chinese clubs are often backed by state owned businesses and that a similar situation exists in other Asian competitions as well. He alludes to it all operating like a competitive free market but nothing could be further from the truth.
The salary cap is an issue because the rules are flexible for the bigger A-League clubs and it would seem at their whim as well. He's happy when Sydney are winning, and crying foul when they are not.
I'm not for or against regulation but I think Simon Hill has got it wrong.
Sydney are losing in the ACL because the referees aren't giving them licence to foul the shit out of their opposition like they can in the A-league.
If Sydney were allowed to kick the shit out of the Asian clubs without being penalised like they do the A-league teams, then Hill would probably be banging on about how wonderful things are and crapping on about Sydney FC being the benchmark in Asia.

Bingo. And so evident in there first hitout in the ACL where the ref was having none of there A League fouling BS.

Nooooo Merrick we need Kanta back in midfield

Merrick has reviewed games from mid-season when the Jets were functioning at their best
ie - when Kanta was in the midfield. Fair dinkum, if Kanta does not return to the mids we may as well put the cue in the rack now.
Even the Scum will have a field day.

I had my little rant about this on the pod last night. He needs to be in midfield - that can't be stressed enough. If Brown was fit, I could probably handle it - but he's not so Kanta needs to come back in.

Can see him playing Mgree and Uga centrally. Not saying its the way to go but I think that's how they've been training and it wasn't a coincidence Mcgree went back there last game.

Brown being injured is such a shame for us at the moment, with Merrick seemingly wanting Kanta in the backline for some more experience and organisation - we really need another person bringing some leadership in the middle of the park, which I don't think Stevie does. While I think he and McGree are both good players, i think they both would play better paired with someone telling them what to do.
I'm a bit disappointed also that Topor apparently hasn't been able to take over leadership responsibilities from Boogs, or not as well as Nigel was doing it. Its not an issue I would have anticipated.

And we actually looked better when that happened. McGree played better when he had the players in front of him, not when he was playing with his back to goal

Mcgree has played a fair chunk of his young career in the central mid position and even anchoring the midfield many times, especially national youth teams. Merrick has been reluctant to move him because of his workrate where he is playing is much higher than both champness and Pato. If kanta stays in defence then we must replace cowburn with mcgree. He is the best option in the squad other than kanta. Even above brown.

It's a viable option and I am starting to convince myself this is the right move if Ernie is going to leave Kanta in the defence.

So silver and gold all become "Category A" with the same inflated price - nice one FFA.
And Bay 1 is the only stand bay that is GA - that will be a squeeze for active support.
Top deck Eastern not open for sale just yet.

The price hike isnt great but tough shit to the people who now want to stand with active support when they haven’t all season. Active support barely fills a quarter of the bay most of the time.

The club I'm playing with this season has started publishing its golden boot and silver boot (assists) table after each round.
Is this the new normal?

Some interesting quotes from Merrick regarding Ronny. 'Moved him around a bit (positionally) and he did well'.
At aek Athens Ronny did play wide a fair bit

well done NNSWFF moving all games from friday night.
i didn't realise that boogs had done his calf as well. that (along with brown's calf) worries me a lot before such a big game.

"We know the formation and the style we'll play ... there won't be too many changes from that last game when we scored eight goals against the Mariners but there's always places up for grabs."
I'll take that as the only change will likely be Boogs in for Kanta, and Ronny onto the bench

He is training but not considered this week - if we got to the GF then perhaps if we were desperate.

Brown himself tweeted that he is back in full training but I heard they were rather annoyed with him when he told them his calf was good but only lasted 10 min as a sub

It is understood approximately 10,000 tickets had been sold for the Big Blue as of Wednesday evening, while a crowd of about 18,000 is expected in Newcastle on Friday night.
FFA have absolutely no grounds to move the final if we win tomorrow night and sydney lose.
10,000 tickets sold for the "biggest rivalrly in football". ****ing pathetic.

Not that I'd put it past the corrupt FFA, but we hosted an Asian Cup semi-final involving the Socceroos here - surely anyone could see Newy is more than capable of hosting an A-League GF should it happen.

In 2008 we knew a few weeks in advance that the GF would be moved....no mention this time.
We will outdraw both finals in Melbourne combined tomorrow night - no more argument.
