This is an important point.
I mean, with all the cap space and spots we had in the off season we couldn't hold onto our own player.
How could Adelaide possibly outbid us?
This club man. Frustrating.

Didnt kitto want to return home?? not much you can do when a player is homesick

We have plenty of homes in Newcastle.
Heck, he could have stayed at mine.

Sorry boys, but I'm gonna put this one down to Middlebys inability to get the job done.

Can never really tell if you are taking this piss or not, usually I err on the side of the former, but what squad places?

Aside from our 3 x u 20's we had to sign, Nabbout, Hoole and Clut are better captures IMO.

we told Kitto he could leave and we weren't interested in resigning him at the end of last season, he didn't really have a choice unless he wanted to hang around like a stray until we had a change of heart - *maybe*...

Clut looks like he is more of a work in progress than Kitto, who is really testing defences atm.

We needed a supporting #10 though and Clut has showed he is capable, versatile and has an eye for goal.

Kitto pretty much plays one position and his goal scoring is pretty debatable. Don get me wrong, If we could have offloaded Pav & Brennan then I would have been more than happy signing him.

The club put us in the position in 14/15 that we would need to sign 3 x u20's for 16/17 yet have the likes of Brennan on a 2 year contract. That screwed our ability to recruit IMO

Both their goal scoring records are shit.

Kitto looks more dangerous though, akin to Nabbout atm.

If you have penetration down the flanks then you're halfway there. Same reason I think we should've kept Virgli. He causes issues with his pace. Just teach the ****s how to cross or when if doubt hit the **** out of it low across the box. Goals will come. Especially with clever strikers like Nobby in the guts.

I don't think even Virgili thinks we should have kept him. You can coach tactics, formations and fitness into senior players. If you can't cross by the time you are 22 you probably aren't going to learn. Virgili had a decent A league career but the league has developed beyond the level of some players, which is good for the game.

I understand what you are saying though, in regards to pace and penetration. I personally think that Nabbout is showing his class because of his touch and thought process rather than speed, Clut has attributes closer to Naboout than to Kitto so i would rather keep him.

On a day when the major news story is a tragic accident that resonates with a lot of people, the Herald (and sister publications) have the entire front page dedicated to advertising a TV steaming service.

Anyone relying on any of these type of organisations for their 'news' these days is seriously misguided.

Just tune into NBN where the sports wrap up goes like this...

Rugby League...NRL....RU.....AFL....more league.....supercars.....surfing......Knights....."back to rugby league"......then local sport where the Jets appear three times a week.

Seriously, there are more surfing stories on NBN than Jets stories - is it really that popular?

Seriously, there are more surfing stories on NBN than Jets stories - is it really that popular?

Interesting question.
At the moment I'd say there is more 'going on' in the world of surfing than the world of the Jets.

Both world titles have recently been decided. One to a (first time) Australian the other to probably the highest paid and most popular surfer on the tour.
Throw in a Newcastle bloke doing ok on the tour (local angle) and the historical aspect of it on our city (I mean the bloke with second most world titles ever can be found down at the beach most days and is amazing with the time he gives anyone wanting a chat etc). So yeah it's a fairly big deal.

But, your point should not be lost on the Jets management that at the moment, with the chasm of interesting and relevant sporting stories out there, are they doing enough to command the spotlight?

Are they making players available for media? Are they providing relevant 'content' for anyone out there to give a toss about?
Yeah game highlights are great but by Tuesday everyone has moved on, and it's to far til the next game.

Jetmaster
26-10-2016, 03:11 PM
The thing with NBN news is it is segmented - the first part of the sports wrap goes to all NBN networks, the second is Newcastle only. That is why you get NRL, AFL and other football in the first break. This is where surfing usually is and has been for some time. The Jets and Knights are usually in the second localised segment.

NBN is full of sharkf****ers. Even Gav raves more about the surf than the weather when he is on!

Not sure how you know that Kitto couldn't play 10 or on the left. FWIW I prefer inverted wings in any event, particularly when you have a team like ours without a genuine target man at the moment. Hoole isn't left footed and he's playing on the left...

Just because you have a few extra right footers doesn't mean you're stock piling in one position. I would prefer to look at who's going to give you the most penetration and worry defences the most, rather than who fits a particular pigeon hole.

I am all for players wanting to set themselves up them after football these days as thats society... but really?

Kanta theory.. Before went and started at uni... good... since then hasnt developed, clearly stagnated..

Studying isnt a walk in the park, maybe for some first year but as it goes on... Alot of stress at times.. ofcourse they have a little bit special cricumstances and support but still.....

These are supposed to be professional footballers.. thats there job period... (not some part time gig, bar tending on the side to help with studying)...

Just did a quick stats check on each teams website.

Shots/Shots on target/Goals

Clut - 4/3/1
Kitto - 1/1/0
Hoole - 1/1/1

Total Passes/Success Rate%

Clut - 40/72.5%
Kitto - 37/54.1%
Hoole - 95/70%

Assists/Chances Created.

Clut - 0/3
Kitto - 2/8
Hoole 1/10

Clut and Kitto have played about 180 mins each. Hoole has played the full 270 mins.

So the point of this is that stats are useless, since Hoole is stealing a living as a footballer.

Which also must mean that Jeterpool has been wasting his time and should have been catching pokemon instead, sorry.

ok im only in the "could we have kept Kitto camp" because no matter how good our team is we need good cheap players to fill out the squad and he def fit that mould for mine.
I mean, the other day the 2 biggest spending clubs were playing each other yet Josh Rose and Mark Warren were on the park.
Forgive me for being cynical but Kitto wouldn't have been the first player to be all like "yeah i really wanna go home but wink wink if you get a few extra dollars in there ill buy a phone card and FaceTime the shit out of those relos".
If we made an offer and he left, so be it. If we just went "oh well he's homesick heres a lift to the airport" we have reason to question the club.

and also, whilst the cynicism is out there, i don't ever entirely trust what the club says, no matter what.
but thats on me, so im cool that he's gone, and we can move on.
besides, once Labi scores and gets that chest out im gonna be like "kitto who?"

When he initially had the injury it looked like he had broken his fibula, or may actually have especially if the X-ray has not gone high enough to check.

Clearly the fact he was having so much difficulty with weight bearing would pretty much indicate there is a stability issue.

With out knowing the finer details I would say that we have lost him for a while if the thoughts are a true sydnesmosis.

Its implicit in "right sided attacker". If you wanted to say he's right footed then you could have and simply added "winger" to it.

I don't think you can write him off from the 9 or 10. He could play those roles as well as Hoole probably.

Well you assumed wrong. Just because a player is nominally is a right sided attacker, doesn't mean he can't play left. Inverted wingers as you correctly pointed out.

My point still stands, Clut offers more in the middle of the field, we needed that type of player and have played him accordingly. You never saw that from Kitto during his time here or in Adelaide. He hugs the touchline and is good at it.

Yeah...and watch our competitors find wriggle room in their cap to accommodate him OR
worse still, the FFA sets up a new category with the discretionary payments outside the cap
for said (Sydney) club: 'Homeless Socceroo'
I suppose as a Socceroo he'll just end up being a Season 2016/17 Guest player for said Sh!tney club
and the FFA will bend over backwards to say "Oh yes, young Matty. Current Socceroo - will put bums on seats...bla bl bla bla".

So now Jackson doesn't need surgery, and injury replacements are 12 week contracts, am assuming we will be relying on NYL players for CB back up.

Never said he was a good signing exactly just meant we needed a CB pronto and now we have one with a decent pedigree. I swear some of you people expect our clubs to sign only top players and whatnot. We have a massive injury crises and where the Jets FFS thats not very attractive for players so were limited in options. Also we couldnt not sign a CB so lets give Fyfe a chance b4 we crucify him. The season is gone already so rather than slapping 34 year old band aids on everything why not start blooding some youngsters from the youth team and / or the NPL sides.
It's the perfect opportunity to try something different rather than follow the same path to failure the club has since season 3 ended.
Alternatively, lets get our new Chinese player on the paddock if we need to and see what he's got - because it's not like things can get worse.

The season isnt gone no way by a long shot and we could always just go youth everytime as you said but look how that worked for the knights. All we need is for the players to pull the fingers out and perform every week and for jones to learn from his mistakes alot quicker then Miller did and i think we can sneak in the finals. Mariners Wsw and Adelaide are shit and weve shown we can match the big boys when we want beating Brisbane and almost beating city etc

So in the same conversation I've read that we (fans) don't want to promote youth, we do want to promote youth, signing a young bloke from another club was a bad idea and signing Fyfe is a bad idea because he's too old... Welcome to life.

You will always have people for or people against.

Me, I would have preferred them to pick up someone from our youth or local NPL. I don't think Fyfe has anything to offer, that some of the locals couldn't. You can say he has experience - he hasn't played in the competition for 2 years. It's completely different and he is 2 years older. He may prove me, and many more wrong, and be a great acquisition but I don't see it.

Jones himself said, he will only be an asset if he can get back to the pace and rigours of the league.

Sums it up perfectly.

Between Jackson, Cowburn, Koutroumbis, Vujica, Duncan, etc, I don't think the club can be accused of not giving youth a decent chance. We need a defender that was willing to come on short notice (McKain wasn't), and someone who knows the A-league, or at least the standard expected of them. If he can provide a steady influence on the rest of the backline for a few weeks, that's all we need. This isn't the time to throw another youngster to the wolves.

The young players getting slaughtered 40mins down the road every game last season certainly don't appear any better for it this season.

who cares if they are local or not. They should be selected to play on merit. The only way you will know if they are good enough is if they are given a go. Some will work out some won't. I'd rather see that happen than just go out and replace someone.

I've got no concerns playing De Godoy when the time is right. My fear is playing him now, in a back line next to Koutroumbis (3 appearances) and Vujica (6 appearances) doesn't have the required experienced head next to them to guide them through a game.

We all saw what happened to the Mariners when they played with inexperience last year. It was a farce.

Hopefully Kanta can beat the clock and play.

Nicky Carle was 15 when he played in the NSL for Sydney Olympic.

Except the GK wasn't in line because he was necessarily good enough, it was because our stocks were so low he was next by default. Carle is a whole different kettle of fish, not to mention slotting into a team that presented next to zero pressure on his shoulders.

And the fact you've compared a GK with an attacker who can play with freedom and not necessarily cost his team goals.

Couple of alternatives:

Uskok - HAL experience, 25 and just won the NSW NPL with Sydney Utd and made round of 32 in FFA Cup.

Cairncross - HAL experience with Sydney FC, captain of Blacktown, 26, QFs of FFA Cup and successful season in NSW NPL.

Petar Franjic - HAL experience, 24, brother of Ivan, decent player who had a good season in VPL.

Vrankovic - HAL experience, 23, playing for Bonnyrigg - ones of the top clubs in the NSW NPL.

All better options than a 34 year old Iain Fyfe who's been playing NPL for 2 years imo. At that age his body is winding down and will find it much harder to re-adapt than these guys in their mid-20s who have something to prove.

Mayb Fyfe has nothing to fall back on outside of football as he's been around for so many years. Just looking to squeeze out as much cash as he can before retirement.

We were never REALLY going to fight for a top 6 with this squad, but we would certainly be better off if we had everyone fit and the same 11-13 players each week.

I know many on here are big fan bois of Brown but after a great goal in the opening round he hasn't entirly won me over, especially the way the club were quick to extend his contract. A little collage on Fox's Shootout showed how he has captain and one of the senior players rather let the team down in the 2nd half. From giving away the free kick needlessly which led to the first goal and then his efforts 3 or 4 times of getting the ball inside our own half and just thumping it long back to Victory. Daresay if it was Kanta, he'd be copping it from all and sundry. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

reads a bit don't blame the coach, blame the owner - I wouldn't let the coach off that lightly, he has to play to the strengths he has injuries or not, try to not play them out of position when he doesn't need to, embrace the idea of using subs as impact players which means giving them enough time on the park to make an impact, and stop telling the fans we played well and were unlucky when we've played sh*t for the first 70min and were lucky not to get flogged, sure he can tell his players in the sheds they were better than they were, but please don't keep saying it to the supporters as some of us really can't see it at the moment, we want a bit more proof, particularly from the tactics of the coach to make it happen...

First 2 games he played as a No. 10 and was great. Since then has played out wide or as a deeper midfielder and not been anywhere near the player he was. Jones is playing him out of position as he's a clueless **** and thus far is proving to be Stubbins mark 2 or worse.

Really think hes been placed there to accommodate the good form of Clut. Playing mids of uga brown and clut is probably the best combination we have. Whilst I agree hes probably played his "best" football in the 10 role I think he offers more then Poljak in the holding role. He does an extremely high amount of work that often goes unnoticed back there.

Brown has been in CM since the opening rounds, Clut has mostly featured off the bench for most of these games.
Given Poljak has gone ok the last couple games though I would be happy with him coming in alongside Ugar and seeing Brown further up.

The midfield line up in round 1 and 2, when we had a lot of energy, pressing and better ball retention, was Kantarovski, Ugarkovic and Brown.

I think we can move back to this and move Clut out wide to the right, keeping Hoole left. He has the discipline and stamina to fill in until Nabbout comes back.

Plague: Jones sounds like he uses the words, 'grit' and 'gumption' a lot and thinks momentum is a real thing.

Ian Fyfe: “They’re a good bunch of lads, but they just need a bit more mongrel in them, I think,” he said on Tuesday at a team lunch in Hamilton.

He suggested the team needed to find more of the “grit” that once defined teams from Newcastle.

Plague thinks Plague is a ****ing oracle and thanks Fyfe for reading the foz and Jones for teaching his team useless buzzwords instead of things like, yanno, playing football.

only thing different really is the end is a bit more nigh than last year, so if they could pick up a gig and leave with a mutual consent agreement rather than wait to be offcasts could be the message, maybe they will all see some game time to make them appear a bit more appealing to prospective employers, Josh Mitchell might give em a personal reference etc... Though Rad will probably have a cracker off-season with Sydney United and end up at WSW... :)
